How awesome is this one?

I own an "indigenous" (a.k.a. barbaric, un-skilled) counterfeit 8 Reales, but this puppy is just mind-blowing!

Interesting. Do you have any idea when it was produced?

Early 1800's, would be my guess. These are a class of counterfeit Portrait coins made in the Spanish Colonies for trade with regional indians.

Is it made of gold or brass? That is a pretty neat piece whatever it is made of. -Dan

Not sure about the gold, but 8 Reales pieces are normally made with low content silver alloys. I would guess it's at least partially gold.

Edit: Here's the one I own:

  • That's a counterfeit 8 escudos, not a counterfeit 8 reales. Never seen one like it.

  • Counterfeit or not, I'd have to say it's a pretty cool piece..... I have to wonder what the gold content is just out of curiosity. I wouldn't mind finding one of them myself, But, If i were a gambling man, I'd have to say it's probably one of very few and finding another one would be quite difficult. Nice find Roman....

Sorry, GDJMSP, I thought the part about it being an 8 Escudos was obvious.

Brad, I don't own the gold piece. It's coming-up for an auction in Spain with an estimate of ~4,000 Euro.
  • Geez, Roman, That's a bit out of my price range. But, definately proof that sometime's as i have seen mentioned on this forum, That a counterfeit can be worth more than the original. I still like the coin very much. But i am looking into parting off with some of my "Litesider" ammo.........LOL , I've got my eye on a 30 Ft. Sailboat. I have had this urge for as long as i can remember. Beside's i need a break from society for a while.image

LOL I love these counterfeits. I try to pick them up but usually they go for alot more than I am willing to pay.

Thats very neat. Look at how crude the date is, it all adds to its appeal though. For that price I suspect its gold.

I thought so too, I misread your post Roman. I thought you were calling it an 8 reales, which I found surprising coming from you. image
