Poll Help: What To Buy Between $2000 and $4000

If I may request some opinions please. What ONE card should I pick up with a value, SMR or otherwise, between $2000.00 and $4000.00. Criteria? Anything and everything. Here are some examples off the top of my head:

1. Rarity;
2. Eye-Appeal;
3. Investment/Appreciate in value; or
4. "Coolness."

Specific Examples:

1933/34 Goudey Ruths or Gehrigs
1951 Bowman Mantle/Mays
1953 Topps Mays/Mantle
1981 Topps Montana
1986 Topps Jerry Rice
1955 Topps Clemente
1954 Topps Aaron
1948 Leaf Ted Williams

    A very nice 1956 Mantle.

Or, if you make enough offers into this recessionary economy,
    you might find a beater/hoopdee 1952 Mantle.

The perfect 1956 will do nicely, as time passes.

My personal choice in that range would be a lower grade T227 Series of Champions Ty Cobb. I think it has the greatest eye appeal of any pre-war card and is tops on my want list. I saw a PSA 3 sell for around $3,200 a couple of months ago.

    Want List:
'61 Topps Roy Campanella in PSA 5-7
    Cardinal T206 cards
    Adam Wainwright GU Jersey
  • I think any of these are great choices-

    1933/34 Goudey Ruths or Gehrigs
    1951 Bowman Mantle/Mays
    1955 Topps Clemente
    1954 Topps Aaron

If it was me I would get the PSA 7 Clemente, I would be patience and make sure to get one centered well, haha

Get yourself a Ruth, when will you ever have a chance again to pick yourself up a Ruth? I did when I had the opprotunity, it's the cornerstone of my collection!

Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
  • I think anything on your list would be a good investment piece, with a bit of cool factor thrown in to boot. Early 1950s Topps or Goudey would be probably better than Bowman, in case of resale down the road, and big name HOFers (Rugh, Gehrig, Mantle, Mays, Aaron)

If I could drop $4000 on any card I wanted, a Goudey Ruth or Aaron Rookie would be my cards of choice, followed by a 1952 or 1953 Topps Mantle then a 1951 Bowman Mantle or Mays.

Edited: I forgot to add I wouldn't touch anything newer than about 1970 for a 'big' ticket item. The Montana and Rice cards from the 1980s would be nice, but there are plenty of 1980s cards (and probably a lot of later 1970s) cards setting out there unopened. Not all of these would contain a PSA 10 Montana or Rice, but those ultra low Pop cards that command crazy cash on eBay will have companions in the future.

Without a doubt, a 1954 Topps PSA 8 Hank Aaron rookie. I believe that card will be a $6000 card in 8 within 3-4 years.

I would go with this. There are always deep pocketed Notre Dame fans to sell to that a lot of time will let their heart override their brain. (note: I didn't write the text, I'm not that eloquent, copied and pasted from Mastro's auction site)

Graded MINT 9 by PSA with none graded higher. Here is one of the very finest specimens in the hobby, of this short-printed, undisputed "key" card from an issue noted far and wide for its collegiate star power. The item artistically portrays the most legendary backfield in college football history in a presentation that's universally admired and avidly sought-after. Near-perfect centering and flawless registration, in combination with a truly pack-fresh appearance, make the offered card a potential centerpiece for any collection. The piece is absolutely uncirculated in character, with four sharp, never-touched corners and brilliant, undisturbed original gloss. It's probable that the collectible was denied Gem Mint status only on the basis of its yellow inner-border hue being a touch light. This is a classic Notre Dame commemorative, and one of the industry's most popular football cards, in exquisite Mint condition.

I would do a PSA 8/9 61 Fleer Wilt Chamberlain or a 57 Topps Basketball PSA 8/9 Bill Russell. Basketball is on its way back and those cards should appreciate more over the next 5-10 years.

if i had that much extra cheese, i'd go for 52 topps jackie robinson and willie mays...they are beauties.
    Working on these raw sets:
    54 & 55 Bowman
    55, 56, 58, & 60 Topps.
Have lots of cards, including some PSAs, 53-58 to trade.
Also, have Football 55-57 to trade for BB cards.

Interesting. Why do you feel this way? Not saying I disagree, but I'm just wondering your thoughts behind this.

    Thanks.

  • I would focus on a pre-war card or cards. My Goudey Ruth is on eBay now. However some other options for you are a nice Cracker Jack, T206, T202 etc. I would look for a 1915 Cracker Jack HOF (Cobb, Mathewson, Johnson), Ty Cobb or Babe Ruth. Here are some examples of my cards (not for sale) to give you an idea:
