A Six?

Hey guys, my first post on here, since I have officially become a dedicated PSA customer. My first submission to PSA was through the Silver Club, which didn't require any fee to submit cards. That club no longer exists, so I recently joined the Gold Club.

Before I send my cards to PSA, I pick out which cards I feel are best (using a nice table-light and a 12x magnifier). I submit my cards expecting nothing less than an 8, as I submit more modern cards. I sent them a 1989 Upper Deck Griffey Jr. rookie card, expecting to get a minimum 8, probably a 9. My grades have been posted, and it got Ex-Mint 6. I have no clue what happened. The only thing I can think of is that it was damaged somehow, either during shipping or PSA's handling of the card. I followed their instructions (Card Saver, Sleeve, ect..) so there was no wrong on my part.

But how do you guys know that I know what I'm looking for when I pre-view my cards before submission? I sent in 5 other cards with the same expectations. "They could receive an 8, but they're all probably a 9 or better". My result:
Four Mint 9's, Two Gem Mint 10's. Then there is that Ex-Mt 6

What do you think could have happened?

  • You made a mistake, they made a mistake, everybody made a mistake.

Nah, who knows, maybe you missed something. Post a scan when you get the card back, I'm sure you'll receive many good opinions on these boards.

  • that could be, but don't two graders review the cards before its given a grade?
My cards shipped on January 30th, I still haven't received them yet.

  • Hmm, I might be more worried about why you haven't received your cards yet. But like I said, post a scan when you get them back, let's take a look.

Is it normal to be waiting this long to receive my cards back? Just counting business days (No Sat., Sun.) its been 8 days

Did you check the small hologram on the back? Were the other cards you submitted white bordered like the Griffey? From my experience, white bordered cards are difficult to check the corners. If your total was 1-10, 4-9, and 1-6, you did awesome for your first submission. I wouldn't sweat it at all. A lot of first submissions end up as 6's and 7's when 8's, 9's and 10's were expected.

  • if you all disagree with the grade, I believe I can send the card in for re-grading. Kind of sad that I'll have to pay for the entire process again for their mistake image
  • Yes. My 1989 Topps Traded Ken Griffey Jr. came back a Gem Mint 10

The '89 UD Griffey is allegedly notorious for 6's due to a factory wrinkle on the back of the card. Apparently a surface wrinkle automatically lowers grade to 6. I don't have access to the population reports but you might want to check to see if there are a lot of 6's. I know I have submitted one that came back a 6 and I thought the same thing. I believe I asked one of the PSA reps back then and that it was they told me about that card.

Registered mail can take up to 2 weeks so I would not worry.

    Good for you.
  • Thank you, Shea master

And this was a while ago. I want to say 2001, 2002? I didn't work or have a job back then (I'm 19 years old now) and while you could still join the Gold or Platinum Membership, you could also join the Silver Club, which didn't give you anything (no pop report magazine, no free submissions) just access to their Submission Form.
  • Haha, sorry to worry you. Take winpitcher's comfort there.

I'd say getting four 9's and two 10's on your first try is pretty damn good. I hope I have that same luck next month when I might join and submit my 1978 Murray, Molitor, and Ryan, along with my Elway, Marino, and Rice RCs. I also hope they all get at least 8's and if I'm lucky enough to get any 9's or 10's, I can really cash in! image

    Ex-Mt 6- 2,717

  • Do they have different standards when they grade cards from that era? Obviously (well, I would think) a PSA 10 of a 2007 Derek Jeter Bowman Autograph isn't going to look the same as a Nolan Ryan rookie PSA 10
  • Sounds like it may have had a small wrinkle, anybody who submits a lot will get them from time to time. Since you got 2 10's, 4 9's I would say well done on your first submission in a while. Most of us would take those kind of grades any day.
  • Yes, I am not complaining by any means. Back when Pokemon was still around, I happened to be lucky enough to acquire an original Japanese Ancient Mew promo card, NOT the ancient mew handed out to movie-goers in America. I finally sent that card in and it received a Mint 9. I am very pleased with the grades I received. Just the 6 stunned me. I was hoping, as I said, for a 9.
  • Very nice on that Griffey Jr. Gem Mint 10! image

The 2 1's are probably autographed.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Don't be. On that card, the 1-2 grade is most likely because both cards were not actually graded but were sent in having been auto'd. With an auto'd card, you have the option to have the card graded and the auto authenticated or just have the auto authenticated with no grade given to the card. For pop report reasons, psa give that kind of card a 1-2 grade.

The standards are the same across the board, hence the reason Jeter has more 10's than a '68 Ryan.

    Nope

Mo, how long ago was this?
  • you could e-mail a PSA representative if you don't believe me. I'd guess 2001, 2002?
  • a surface wrinkle (crease) brings the card down to a PSA 5, the griffey may have a crease (indentation) in an edge, bringing it to a PSA 6....

Graders dont give a modern card a mid to low grade UNLESS they see something (albeit tiny) to warrant such a grade....

Every time i got a lower than expected grade (2 to 3 grades) i review the card for things i missed and usually i find the (timy) flaw that warranted the grade....

    Hi Mo

First, I'ld like to say Welcome!

I joined the forums 4 yrs ago last month - have never regreted a second of it. Well - maybe one 'short' second.

When ya get the Griffey back, could ya give us a scan - preferrably with a dark background - leave the scanner lid up e.g.

Your results were tremendous! Except for the one card - I have no idea why - as was said - perhaps ya missed a wrinkle?

    I've done it.

Thanx for sharing and don't be a stranger. Coat and tie? - optional.

  • Thank you! And absolutely. I will scan the card in as soon as I receive it.
  • Here is the card
    front/back
    PLEASE NOTE
The little brown mark you see in the bottom left corner came up on the scan, its not on the card

I'm gonna take a stab and say your card got a 6 because the top of the hologram is cut off.
  • what's that little "bump" thingy on the front of the card in the bottom left corner (right above the Upper Deck name)? Is that from the scanner or on the slab?
  • that just came up on the scanner. Its not on the card.

I got an '89 Sheffield graded PSA 10 one time that had a part of the hologram ripped off.
