Question about year after final year played???

Ok, so I have a Puckett registry set and his last playing year was 1995.

Here's the question: How come cards with career stats from 1996 are not included in the player registry? Seems like they belong as the career stats include the 1995 stats. I understand that cards produced years later that include career stats are not included but why not the year following the last year played?

Any ideas on the rationale behind this and more importantly where the rules that specifically state whcih cards will be included after a players play years? I couldn't find it on the site anywhere.

Thanks,

Mike

Usually they will allow cards issued the year following the player's last playing year because it includes their stats. That has been my experience anyway. Of course, every player registry set is different though.

This is from the PSA Set Registry Request web page:

    Player Sets:
In general, player sets consist of cards for that player which were manufactured during the player's play years. Exceptions: Many companies produce cards for players the year after the player has retired. These cards will be allowed if they list the previous year's stats for that player on the back of the card or were manufactured expressly to depict activity from the previous and final play year. In addition, there are a few vintage sets that may list one or two cards past the play years. These cards are allowed due to their extreme popularity. For example, in the Babe Ruth Basic Set, the 1948 Leaf is listed even though Ruth retired in 1935. Player sets in the miscellaneous sports category may include some post-retirement dated cards due to limited availability of play years cards.

  • Yeah, Today I had a PSA set regisry person tell me that because the 1995 stats were not listed on the back that the cards don't fit the criteria for inclusion. Weird. Seems like I could argue that the 1995 stats are included in the career stats....but I get the idea I'm pissing upwind.

  • I tried getting the 1996 Bowman's Best added to the Kirby Puckett Master set a while back and I was denied. A couple weeks or months later someone re-requested it and it made it in. They always ask for a scan of the 1996 cards if you request them, in my experience. FWIW, I was also denied on the 1996 SPx.
  • Maybe if we both request the cards they will put em in. Its not like there are many people active with Puckett other than the two of us.....

I seem to recall requesting the SPx last year and was also denied. As I recall the card does not have any stats on the back at all, lol.

The 96 BB is a wierd one, stats are broken into 4 year groups and career with no seperate stats for 1995. It doesn't seem to fit the criteria but since it's in and I have it in PSA 10, I'm not going to use it as an example for including my other 1996 cards that have only career stats....for fear they'll just remove the 96 BB rather than add the others.

    Oh well.

They are being silly in the Puckett case. He had every intention of playing in '96 and actually was doing well in spring training of that year. 1996 issues should be a part of every Puckett collection, the 1996 Finest Gold refractor was my favorite Puckett for a long time. The 1996 Century Marks is a classic card.
  • It seems that the year after a player no longer plays card companies have the option of producing either a 1995 stats only card or a career stats card. In either case the stats include his 1995 activity and these should be included. I completely agree with limiting this to only the year after final play. In this case, all 1996 Puckett cards that list career stats include the 1995 stats.....so am I missing something here?

I just want to see some sort of rule written that specifically states that career stats for players after the final year of play are not included and only cards where final year stats are seperated from career stats are ok. I think the defining part of the rule as written has to do with cards that include prior year stats, for which these 1996 issues do.

It would be a simple call if PSA was consistant but because career stats, 1995 stats, and even grouped year stats (as in the 1996 Bowman's Best) are included in the Master set now that I have a hard time understanding why just about any card from 1996 that includes stats are excluded.
