Nearmint Olympics - Progress against the Empire

Dav, Dav, Dav,
I was checking this weekend on the status that we small lowly rebels are making against the empire. Some has been good, some not so good. I have pulled to a close two medal margin on the 60's FB. Plans are underway to make this race even tighter by the awards. By summer I think I will get his attention. The 70's FB you assigned me, that I don't really collect is coming along as well. Have made progress and cut the lead to 6. Have plans to whittle into this one as well in the same time frame. When I checked the 50's FB........ I say Nay Nay. Dav,
I think you are losing ground to the empire there. I am even catching you here. THAT would be an embarrassment.
Also strolling over to the BB, I am up to 4th in the 70's and look at this below for 60's BB.
Fuzzdude 6 5 6 17
Davalillo 8 4 4 16
Donald E. Spence - The Lone Star Collection 6 2 3 11
Not the biggest, not the best. Just on top.
I can get Nearmint to send you the rules again if you have forgotten how to play. Please tell me you are just behind in your updating? Maybe Shoulda could still lend you his assistant. The Empire is starting to list BB sets. Not much yet but we know how it starts. This is like the Ferrari being passed by the Yugo. It is a sign something is wrong in the force.
Dav, are you still there? Have the mountainous piles of cards avalanched and buried you?

    Ouch, that one hurt.

Looks like I may have to try a little harder. In 60s football I got to 2nd in The 62 Salada set and wiped out Shouldabeena to move you up to 2nd. Also trying hard on the CFL sets. 50s fb trying to finish my sets with slow progress. Guess in both baseball and football that I have to abandon my goal of 100 sets and concentrate harder on the Olympics.

Watch out--you and my other competitors are warned--Dav is coming.

    Who's there?

    Wood who?

Wood you prefer if I snatch four 1960's FB medals from around your neck ... or 1970's medals ... with my next submission, Fuzzy?

I figure it's only polite to let you decide!

  • Shoulda,
Long time no see. How's it goin'. I see you still can talk it. Please be my guest. Take all 8.
You know that if the situation was reversed I would gladly do the same for you.
Still waiting for the 66 onslaught. Did you change your name to the Gould collection. If so, nice job.
I do have a few medals that are low hanging fruit. They would be pretty easy to take.
Please don't let the fact your wife likes me better than you influence your decision.
Take 'em all, go ahead, make my day.

Saw you took back sixth place in the 69 Deckle set. Had been meaning to write to bring up the fact that I had gotten in front. I think I have one or two upgrades that are not in the set yet. Now I will have to go look.
Also picked up another 50's FB medal a couple of weeks ago.

    Fuzz,

As soon as I get my cards, you will be down one medal in 60s football.

    Dav
  • Nick,
Glad to hear from you. I assume that is your 62 T BB stamp panels set that is new? I have bid on a number of those recently on eBay but I don't think I did too well. A large number by comparison were available. We may both be on the outside looking in. Or is it possible that you did not list it yet and just waiting for a surprise. I do have a few things up my sleeve there so I could still end up OK.

    Dav,
Some of those bronze are just low hanging fruit. There are a number that wouldn't be too hard to get. I suspect though your just going to smash one and end up well ahead. A submission of a raw set by chance? Upgrades from the .5's? It will be interesting at any rate. Paul Lemm took one of mine last week in 64 T FB which was not low hanging. I really need to pick up copies of the last three there I need to put a little distance in that one.Just so many really low pop cards in that one. I have shared the plans, I suspect that it will still all work out in the end.

Still no Jeremy. Is he OK or hibernating for the off season. Also having Nearmint himself kick my tush weekly now in the Royal Castle auctions. This may require drastic action.

'62 Topps Stamps Panels is me. It won't take you much effort to keep ahead of me on this set, but considering the group lots that have sold recently, if the owners bother to register, we could both be out of the top 10 there in short order.

    Fuzz,

1960 Fleer College Pennant Decals. I should be able to be in second and knock you to fourth--sorry.
  • This is ultimtely the problem with living in the bronze lane of these little sets. A small investment required to get on the board but only a slightly larger investment to take you off. If any of the bigger buyers of these recent panels lists then your right Nick, we are both gone. There are still a number of sets though where this strategy works and will for a while. (66 Topps Venezuelan, 67 OPC, etc.) One or two cards will go a long way.
Jim, I was hammered on eBay for these this week by "Foots24" who paid over $80 a piece for some of the PSA 8's. He got most of a set (or that the one your referencing)? If it isn't going to end up with you I could be out of the top ten soon. I know a number of unopened boxes where to be had ten years ago or so for the 60 and 61 Fleer. I know where they came from and they were somewhat pletiful for a bit. I suspect that the inserts saved are still in nice condition so I have not been willing to step up to high for those as I do think more will be available and it is a thinly collected set.
Hoping to get a few more subs to pop b the end of the month. Maybe I can even fight back a little.

    Art,

You should never feel bad about taking a medal from the Empire or Fuzz. I am a way distant third and need vall the help I can get from these powerhouses.

    Jim
  • Skinsfan,
No harm. Over the years I have gotten use to your shoe print of the back side of my britches. You have taken more medals from me that all the others. I guess I was expecting it. Now I do have a pile of raw stickers from that set. Guess I will have to find them now and see if they will get me back in the game. Besides, the plan includes a little slipage so this should be no problem.
The medal that I lost last week on the 64 Topps FB set should be back in control by next weekend as the cards to move me back into the bronze slot should be in the mail shortly. And as long as you get one from Jim there will be no complaint from me. What chance does a little guy like me (collecting wise not physical size) stand with the a HOF'r like Dav and moneybags like MOSH?

Whoops--Dav picks up another 60s medal and Fuzz falls from the Top 3 in another set. My coach and strategic planner Couldabeena practically gives me the 1969 Tresler Comet Set which gives me the gold medal and coincidentally knocks Fuzzdude from the Top 3. I have a long way to go to catch Fuzz and the Evil Empire but the trend is now clearly in place.
  • You thought I didn't see this but in fact I ddid.
I wasn't counting on that I was just holding it for whoever bought the great Shouldbeena set. I haven't had a quality set in that one for some time. Just so you didn't feel bad for me, I took time off from my family reponsibilities and trying to finish my taxes and updated a couple of sets just for you.
In 64 Topps FB I added enough to push me back into third. Knock that one down a peg. I dare you. That set is tough.
I also updated my 69 Deckle BB to move one place in front of America's favortie action hero.
And I also updated my 69 4 in 1 FB to knock you from 4th to 5th. Medal soon to be forthcoming.

Just so you wouldn't feel bad for me.
Now this weekend I will finish taxes and afterwards I will hatch a new diabolical plan for total Olympic domination.

Well, I am making some steady progress in 64 Topps FB--it is tough but not as tough as 63.

I have been holding out for n8s on the 69 deckle--may have to start filling in with 7s.

I have forgotten the 4-in-1s which is a mistake as in this contest you cannot forget any set.

We need him fighting a multi-front battle so he can be diverted from the 50s-60s battles.
  • I checked this afternoon and there was an administrative issue or two which havae now been rectified.
After briefly dropping to a tie in 60'd BB, that has been fixed.
Also, after dropping to a 16 set lead over third in 60's FB, that has ben fixed and I have pushed it back up to 21.

I was telling Jeremy about some of the raw "gold medal" sets that I had over here waiting to be graded, and he's been driving past my house every few hours, ringing my doorbell, and then running away.

I also met up with Ken (KLS23) at the Chantilly card show last month. We went out to grab a bite to eat after the show, and he told me he used to live near Jeremy down in Florida, and he'd do the exact same thing to him ... ring his bell and run. From what I understand, Jeremy is up here in Maryland to attend a salad eating contest with Ken next week.

I'm not sure what to make of all that, but I'll keep you informed.

Speaking of strange .... Art also came over the other morning, and was flipping through the Tressler comets set I was boxing up for Lillo. He'd just come back from Taco Bell and had Salsa and bean stains all over his shirt. I offered him a cup of coffee which he proceeded to spill on my desk. Maybe 5 whole minutes later he steps right on top of a binder of '61 Fleer Magic message cards I was sorting through, and in trying to catch his balance ... he knocks a big pile of '63 Steeler IDL's off my desk, and spills his new cup of coffee again.

He's now been banned from my card room for life.

Hey Fuzz, let me know how your '68 KDKA's do at PSA ..... I should be getting back a bunch of 9's and 10's next month and I might need a couple of fillers. image

  • Mike,
I have heard that about Art before and I think it was from you. I had a friend that use to come over to see the stuff. He would not go in the room because fo the value on the floor. I had to bring the neat stuff to the hallway. Fortunately, it's a small low $ collection so there is not that much neat stuff now.
I do have the GOLD on the KDKA and probably the award for this year. What a deal I got on that set. I suspect no 9's and 10's but maybe a silver and a bronze to add wouldn't hurt.

Yes, if TV cameras would just follow Art around all day long, I swear they could have the #1 rated comedy sitcom on TV. He's the kind of guy where you'd just be standing there talking to him, everything's all normal, and then ... poof .... his hair catches on fire suddenly, and he's jumping all around slapping himself in the head.

  • Added one the old fashioned way last night after the taxes got mailed (1969 Topps 4 in 1 ) in the 60's FB and have temporarily taken over first place. Last time it last one week, maybe less. We'll see how it goes this time.
This gives me the top spot on 60's BB and 60's FB for the moment.

  • Dav,
Re: 63 Topps vs. 64 Topps. YOu made the comment that 63 is harder than 64.
I recently got a moment to go back and check.
I used the single digit rule. Just straight down the 8 NQ column and count the nuber of cards with a pop in the single digits.
Card sets are roughly the same size.
There are more than three times as many cards in the 64 than in the 63 with single digit pop's in 8.
I know that doesn't count 9's. I know that there are 31 sets listed in the 63's and only 19 in the 64's.
In terms of hardest to complete, I vote for 64's.
Even Claude Crabb would vote for 64's.

    Fuzz,

You might be right but I used to need about 40 psa 8s or better fior completion in each. Now I still need I think 34 psa 8s for 1963 and 13 or so for 1964 band I put an equal effort into each.

The one thing I think you are leaving out of your analysis is that demand for the 63s is quite a bit higher(NFL,AFL).

    Fuzz,

I inadvertantly think I got you another 60s football medal. Last night I got a package of 64 Wheaties from Couldabeena--probably not enough to put me past you but I think he was above you before his sale.

It had been so long since I bought them I had forgotten. I think Couldabeena waits for my check to clear each time(he must think I am a credit risk) and then waits another two weeks for good measure just to be sure the bank did not make a mistake.

Just kidding Mike--I appreciate the help!

I just swiped a gold medal from the Empire, beating them by a whole 0.2 registry points. OK, so it's in '80s football. OK, so it's not a major set. OK, so they only had 1 card listed.

But it's mine. Mine, mine, mine. All mine. [insert demonic laugh]

We now return you to the purchases of cards that are actually valuable.

<< <i>I think Couldabeena .... waits another two weeks for good measure >>

Actually Jim, we had a slight problem at the card warehouse. The hydraulic forklift that the staff normally uses to remove the pallets of cards stored on the shelving units in our 1960's oddball card room #4, was temporarily malfunctioning.

A repairman was flown in over the weekend to work on the forklift, however he was detained overnight in Atlanta due to the recent airline inspection problems.

I can assure you our staff worked night and day, unloading by hand the cases upon cases of cards that were stacked on top of the 1960's Wheaties card section, in order to try and retrieve your cards and get them to you in a timely manner.

I apologize for the slight delay, and we certainly appreciate your understanding in this most unfortunate matter. We take great pride here at Couldabena/Shouldabeena Football Cards Inc., in delivering the finest gold medal, award winning cards that the hobby has to offer... in a timely manner, of course.

We look forward to your continued support, and if you ever need an update on any of your shipments, feel free to call one of customer service reps on our 24 hour hotline at 1-800-555-GOLD, or you can reach me directly at extension PSA10.

Then the last part of Couldabeenas strategy is to be very slow about removing the cards from his set. About a week from now, after a few e-mails to him he'll say oh sorry Dav I think I forgot to remove those cards from my set....like this time. He oughta reallocate some of the staff from operating his hydraulic forklift to customer service.
