First look at a graded PSA 8.5

Pic borrowed from Ebay...

45/55 centering l/r with a minor tilt, slight touches on 2 corners, plus edge chipping common with this issue.

those of you not familiar w/ 71 set, they do get a different grading standard than other sets. it is hard as hell to gauge how a '71 card will be graded also.

IMHO grade fits card, wonderful card.

The owner of that card must have let PSA take some scans for a book or something. Scratch our back, we'll scratch yours.

Looks like angles aren't hurting the cards. The 71 Foster doesn't make me too excited it's centering is the only great thing about it. If the Foster is notoriously OC then I can see someone spending alot for that copy. The 75 Kaline is centered a little high too me for the bump. Pretty inconsistent lot to start off.

A few months ago I sent in about 4 cards from 71 as nice with definately nicer printing and got all 7's. I do agree that the Foster is an 8 but not an 8.5. We will see dealers soon with their cases with many 8.5's that look overgraded. This is what we all saw with the GAI downfall. By the way, the Foster will now sell for $14 as opposed to $13. I'm wondering if it was sent in on the one day service(estimated turnaround time)image

Large chunk missing = PSA 1. Some submitters are allowed to ride in the executive elevator and 1%'ers are herded in to the freight elevator.

PSA 8 Fosters usually go for between $30 and $45.

    << <i>large missing chunk = PSA 7 >>

Looks more like a rough cut thats not uncommon with 71s. I've seen plenty of 8s with them.

  • Damn, someone got a gift on that 71' Davison/Foster. Not worthy of an 8.5 in my opinion, but I have been told I am a bit too picky.

    Digicat,
If that card sells for $45 then I need to send in all of my 8's for reviews and become a millionaire. I think it's worth $14 tops. It's a junky 8 at best. When I said the card is an 8 I was being ultra generous on the rough cut when in actuality it is more than rough- it basically has a piece missing on the left side. Keep me posted on what the card sells for. I wouldn't buy the card for $10 buy it now.

    Well.........I Dunno.......

IF loooking at hundreds more does not make me feel more educated/confident
than I feel now, I may start to think this needs to be explained better:

    ///////////////////

    Half-Point Grades:

Cards that exhibit high-end qualities within each particular grade, between PSA Good 2 and PSA Mint 9, may achieve a half-point increase. While PSA graders will evaluate all of the attributes possessed by a card in order to determine if the card may be eligible, there will be a clear focus on centering.

Generally speaking, a card must exhibit centering that is 5-10% better, at minimum, than the lowest % allowed within a particular grade. It is important to note that there may be cases where the overall strength of the card, such as the quality of the corners and print, will give the card the edge it needs despite the fact that it may exhibit only marginal centering for the grade. This is especially true for cards that find themselves within the bottom half of the PSA 1-10 scale.

    ///////////////////////

It might be that the .5 of EACH grade actually needs to be explained
inside of the published Grading Standards. Since they know what they
are looking for, they should be able to explain it in pretty good detail.

BUT, I have now seen fewer than 20 cards. Maybe I will "get-it" better
after handling a bunch of them.

If this card had a $30 BIN, I'd be mine already.

A VERY tilted PSA 8 Foster (42/58 l/r top half, 54/46 l/r bottom half) just sold for $47 a week ago.

    The auction's still running....

There's a PSA 8 that's been bid up to over $70 with 5 days to go, I guess either there are some new collectors agressivly hunting his cards, or Foster's been training in the off season and is gonna make a comeback.... image

  • I think it is a nice card with a rough cut, rather then a missing piece. I think we could blow up the worst spot on any rough cut and make it look bad.

Chaz is right. If that card is an 8.5, then the stuff I just had graded that came back in 6 holders are actually Gem Mint 10's.

    Awful.

I agree with Digicat - the side "rough cut" area is not figured in the grade - just the corners of cards in that category.

    On the .5'ism.

I think down the road it makes PSA more competitive with companies that have it.

The fact that they said last month or last year that they wouldn't do it is - at this point - moot.

My cards are still what they are - and I enjoy the heck our of them and the hobby.

Tell ya what? Take out a binder today or a stack of PSA's - read the backs - the stats - the Topps comic - look at the picuture...

No matter what happens, those cards are still good - enjoy them. image

Actually, it's not mine, I found it on Ebay. It belongs to BBCE.

Your Foster has already passed the highest price that a PSA 8 Foster has realized for the past 16 months, according to VCP. Congrats!

Both the Foster and kaline shown in this thread are not IMO worthy of the grades they got.

The Foster is a 5 and the Kaline a 7

of course my opinion matters not, PSA's does.

This does not mean that those examples will sell premiums.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • Thank you mucho. I think there have been a good amount of folks looking to resubmit my cards. I just don't have the energy or the care to get involved with that anymore. I'm pretty much done buying vintage. I'll be selling the collection through the summer though.

Kell '48 SP, Heilmann Amer. Caramels, Kaline collection, Gibson rookie, Jennings Cracker Jack and much more

  • I personally think that messing with a system that has worked for 15+ years is a mistake.

One of the reasons PSA caught on was 'simplicity'.

Just like anything else the change to .5 will benefit some.

Cards with serious price spreads between grades for one.

It is those cards that IMO should be graded within a .5 scale

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • Thankfully a lot of the cards I've been selling have had pretty wide gaps between graded values.

Foxx, Freehan, Gehinger, Bob Gibson, Goslin and much more
  • It will be interesting to watch the trends develop. The Foster went for 100. last PSA 8 was 47 and last PSA 9 was 470.
The best pitch to start a hitter off with is always strike one.
  • ...and that Foster was not as nice as mine. I'm crossing my fingers.

A 71 Munson 8.5 would be a nice card to have..if graded properly

  • Here is an auction that closed tonight. A little surprised it didn't go for more. Maybe some were turned off by the auction itself, but it will be interesting to see how high profile .5 bumps shake out in the future

Even at $1330, it still shows a 30% premium over all the other straight 8's. Although it's a far cry from the $4.7k + the 9's are seeing, a large part of that could be pop though.

    Nice looking card.
