WTB 1916 D dime

First let me say that I am new to this. My darling husband collects coins. He does not have a large collection, but he is proud of what he has/had. He has had to sell a few of them to help out our family in bad times. These were coins he purchased before we ever met. So now I feel extremely guilty that he made such a sacrifice for us. I would like to "pay him back". With a coin that is. Other ways have been taken care of lol imageI have read some of the books he has, trying to educate myself on buying coins. Every year for Christmas, his birthday and our anniversary etc. I ask him what would he like. He ALWAYS replies the same... "a 1916 D dime". Well, after a little homework on my part, I have found that this is a fairly rare dime. I want to find him this dime and purchase it for him. Can someone please help me? I do not know where to begin. I know ebay has a lot of coins, but I am scared to spend that amount of money on something that I'm not sure of. I don't know what grade I should be searching for. I have an amount in mind that I'm willing to spend but I don't want to get ripped off because I don't know. My husband's 40th birthday is in April. I want to give him this dime. He has given so much to our family. This is the least I can do for him. Is it reasonable to think I can find one of these dimes? If so, can I find a nice (i'm not expecting mint here) dime for 1-2k?
Thanks for any help.

You'll get plenty of help here. My advice would be that if you end up going the Ebay route, make sure you buy a certified coin from PCGS, NGC, or Anacs. Don't buy a raw coin, too many fake ones out there. Like I said, others will chime in, but that's the first thought that came to my mind.

    Good luck!

  • I was just going to post that you could afford a Pcgs Very Good, but that one would be extremely hard to find, and lo and behold savoy found one!

One in Good condition is not that rare. There are maybe 5 or 6 on ebay as we speak (go to ebay and do a search for "1916-d dime pcgs" for example). As you can see a good runs about $1100-$1200 (don't trust the price guides which may say much higher). Besides being far rarer than a G, a VG looks much nicer as the reverse lettering won't be worn into the rims. I think it's well worth it to spend the $800 more or so to get a VG. If you had to resell it, you could likely find a buyer immediately (and not have to compete with all the people selling G's).

If JJ hasn't sold that Fine-12 one (maybe it sold as the image doesn't seem to work), and you could stretch to afford it, that seems to be the pick of the litter. (ie a modest amount more in price but likely a huge increase in quality). Their description about the VG seems nice, but I sort of see some scratches or something in the image. They may not show at all on the coin but I'm not sure what to think of it. Pcgs won't encapsulate most cleaned coins, but sometimes a very light cleaning is deemed "market acceptable" and they still encapsulate it. Virtually any 16-d not certified by pcgs, anacs, or ngc, has likely has been cleaned or is even a fake. An anacs or ngc coin is likely to be as nice a quality as a pcgs one (for circulated coins, not necc for mint state coins) but may be harder to resell if you ever need to. Don't buy one with a large scratch or spot or anything as it won't look nearly as nice and will be much harder to resell if you ever need to.

Anyway, best of luck! And your husband is really lucky to have you!

Good advice so far. I just bought a G-4 in 100% original condition for $1075. Be very cautious of EBay. If you do find one on EBay link it here so others can help. Good luck.

Buy a PCGS or NGC-certified coin only.

Figure on a Good-06 or Very Good-08 for your budget. Either one would be a great coin to own!!
    When in doubt, don't.

  • thanks for the info...i will check it out.
  • i see the coin jj teaparty has...not the really nice one as i cannot afford those but what is everyone's opinion on the g coin. i had really hoped to find something a little nicer looking for him. the "d" mint mark...does that bother anyone? as far as value goes.
    all input is appreciated.
    thanks,

My opinion is...if you can afford a G6, then you can afford a VG8, and the VG8 is going to be much nicer because its going to have full rims on both sides (the questioned coin has incomplete rims on reverse) and will probably have a mint mark with at least a discernable center on the D. The flat 'D' doesn't really bother me...but I know a lot of collectors like to at least be able to make out some portion of the center of the 'D'. These things are not really 'rare' in that you can always find them in the lower grades...and if you can always find them...why not wait until you find a nice above average for the grade example.

    thanks for the info....
I have another question, one of the members on an above statement/link has a dime for sale-pcgs -f-12 what do you think of that dime, and what price do you think i should be willing to spend on it.
I have time to hunt, about a month. I would like to buy hubby a nice dime, but his(seller's) price range is really out of my budget, but i could stretch it.
is that a good value in your opinion, or for that amount of money, should i be looking for something better/worse.
All honest opinions are very appreciated.
    Thanks.
I hope to soon post pics of my darling hubby opening up his present!

I believe drddm sold that F-12 dime you are refering to.
  • I am still searching.....looking for a 1916 d dime.....anyone out there to help me out?
  • i have had a small increase in my budget now. so i would like to find a nice dime. a collector at the show i went to on friday said i should be able to get a f-vf for my budget.....anyone out there with one or know where to get one?
  • I DID IT! i found a coin, and won the auction and purchased it. I am eagerly awaiting its arrival now. I purchased a pcgs vg8 for about $2040. i hope i got a good deal, but at this point it really doesn't matter. it seems like a nice coin and i hope my hubby will enjoy it.
thank you to everyone who offered input/advice. there is no way i could have done it without everyone's help.
    Thanks again!!!
