  • Hi Richard:

IMO, slabbing is totally unnecessary for ancients. Adds no value, whatsoever, to the final product. Also, slab services do not fully
attribute ancient coins, regardless of the service...

Having said that, this is the service I would use:

    David Sear Authentication/Certification

where you will get the most bang for your authentication/certification buck. Adds value to any product on resale, IMHO.

  • Thanks for comments - as funny as it may seem, I just don't know who is out there and if they are reliable for buying already slabbed material. I collected ancients 25 years ago and have been buying a few recently (tetradrachms in EF or better) from good scources so am not worried about authenticity. I have seen some slabs and just don't know what the standing of the various outfits is.

I don't know if ICG's ancients grading is up and running yet again. After the large personel swap with ANACS the guy who did most of the ancients ended up at ANACS. There was a post not too long ago (someone else may remember who posted) that mentioned a recent submission getting returned. It sounds like they plan to be back in the ancients business at some point, you might want to email them. If you are looking at already slabbed material I understand that ICG gets some respect. I don't collect that area myself though, so I'm just going by rumor here and a few other places I lurk.
