1967 Royal Castle Dolphins: doing the Fuzz thing

Following Fuzz's strategy in the 60's football card olympics, I bought this card:

This single card put me into second in the registry for the Royal Castle set, just ahead of Fuzz!

I hadn't seen one of these cards before, but I was surprised at its size. It's bigger than the large Bowman cards, and it looks like PSA used a tall boy holder for it.

I'll enjoy picking up a card here and there from the set. Here's the back of the Norton:

The more oddball the card, the better in my book! image

That's a riduculously tough set. The Griese is the key of course, since it was issued a year before his RC. Mike Hattley has a handful of graded ones at his site, but no Griese. He had one years ago for $1000 that had the name trimmed off the bottom. Good luck!

You're right, Joe, this one's going to take some time. I did pick up another: Bob Petrich, still in his Chargers uniform.

Thanks for the tip on the web site. I emailed for a couple of scans, but so far no reply.
  • I will take your imitation as flatery.
This was a great set since someone already had it listed. I'm not sure I could get to five all that fast.
It is an interesting set and I hadn't seen a card before. The next few however, I got outbid on.
I will stay around and keep you honest.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.

Gotta love cards where someone used a typewriter to do the stats.

Thumbs down for the cards being in black and white. Thumbs way up for the silly smiling spoons ... image

  • Hey Nearmint,
Congratulations on taking over the top spot in the 61 Fleer FB race. I see those two big PSA 6's put you over the top. Good Luck on holding off Antix he is one tough customer. And a 9.00 set as well!!
    Nicely done.

That Fuzz is one tough competitor. Standing just two points below the mighty MOSH, I would bet on him to overtake the Evil Empire in coming months. Coming up with a card from a set I never heard of to snag a bronze. I sit in third place in awe watching these mighty titans battle it out.

Sure, it's flattery. I actually just saw the open third place spot, so I bought the first card. I didn't realize it would put me in second!

Yeah, National City, Kahn's, Bell Brand. I'd like to pick up all of those. It's an interesting change collecting cards that are hard to find in any condition, rather than looking for high-grade cards that are abundant in lower grades.

Thanks, it's been a long climb! Yeah, I got tired of waiting for auctions to come up, so I sent in the beaters from my old raw set. I also intended to complete my 1962 Fleer set with an ugly Babe Parilli card, but it came back MSR. image

Definitely! What I'd really like to find is one of the Royal Castle Junior Dolphin membership cards!

Yup, I expect to have to keep spending on that set. Upgrading the 6's and 7's shouldn't hurt too badly, though.
  • I would also bet on Fuzz to make a push in late spring. I think he has a good shot at over taking the empire. Speaking of the empire, where is Jeremy through this whole conversation? Is no one will to defend the empire?

Skinsfan, Have the email working at home again after about two months. Need to be in contact with you regarding a recent sub.

The truth of the story is that MOSH and I together cannot stir up enough action to get Dav's attention in this game. He is just over there completing more sets than God in PSA 8+ building an unbelievable collection. In that race, I think that I am only 60 something behind.

    Nearmint,
Have been able to find some of those rarer cards but geez the prices being asked can be steep. Yes, they are tough but come on. It is easier to focus on the sets already listed because getting five Golden Tulips to grade may be a bit of a challenge. But there still is a trick or two up my sleeve. The 61 Fleer set has been the most contested set for a few years now and looks like it will be again. At the few cards I add to that one every year, I hope to be in the mix in 2087.

Jeremy is tearing his hair out--he sees Fuzz coming and can't do anything about it--all those all night strategy sessions on how to stay ahead of the Fuzz--for naught.
