  • The Reds will surprise some people this year by being in contention the last week of the year. They've formed a good nucleus and if they can get one more starter to go with Harang and Arroyo and Bailey steps in and does a nice job, you could be looking at the 85-88 wins it's going to take to win that division. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah but Bailey looked nowhere near ready last year maybe one of the players they got from Texas will help.

Good Luck with the interview, but if you get the job I suggest getting a place in NKY.

thanks, interview went well, I have been invited to a second round at the end of the month and meet with their head of sales for Kraft foods. I stopped at a mall off of 275 called Cincinnatti Mills or something like that with a Guitar Center and a Biggs store inside. There was a card shop that had thousands of packs from every year from 1980 on up for outrageous prices. My favorite was the complete set pricing, 89 for a 81 Topps BB set and 79 for a 86 Topps BB set. Guy was very rude.

Harang is one of the best half dozen starters in the NL, and probably tops on the list of most underrated. Arroyo really struggled last year, he'll have to rebound. Bailey is young but has excellent stuff, it won't be long before he's a force.

With Dunn, Phillips, Griffey, a breakout year for Encarnacion, and rookie Joey Votto, the offensive numbers should be there, so if a 4th or 5th starter steps up and gets 10 wins, the Reds could be in contention late. Adding an all-star closer and getting Weathers back to set-up could reduce the amount of 8th and 9th inning heartbreakers we suffered last year.

I'm disappointed that Edinson Volquez (who?) is all we could get for Josh Hamilton. I guess when other teams know you're loaded at the outfielder position, you don't have a lot of leverage.

I've always wondered how much a manager actually contributes to a teams' success, but having Dusty Baker on board may be what we need. Like was said before, in the NL central, 85 games might do it.

Peter Gammons was on Mike and Mike this morning and was asked which team he thought would be better than most are expecting.

    He picked the Cincinnati Reds.

They sent Bruce back to to the minors yesterday, but Volquez and Cuento have looked very good in what may be the fourth and fifth starters.

Perhaps they'll stay in contention the whole season??

The Cards signed Lohse hee hee so you know the pitching is thin in the central. The Cubs are the team to beat imo.

    Nice comeback last night.

Facing Webb and Haren isn't the easiest start to the year.

I still see some promise, perhaps I'm delusional??

Cueto looked great in his debut, striking out 10!!

Winning the first series against the D-Backs is a good start.

I guess I'll hang out in this thread by myself.

Volquez looked like a stud today too. This team is looking good.

I caught a little of the Reds game last night. It was the 8th inning and there was only a handful of people seated behind home plate. I was amazed. I never saw a stadium that empty, especially those prime seats.

I always take whatever Gammons says as gospel, so I was surprised back in the pre-season, when he said he thought the Reds would win the division. I can see why he said it, lots of good young players, but I think they are a year or two away.
