Burglary and stolen cards on January 3, 2008

Dear Fellow Collectors:

On January 3, 2008, my home in Sacramento was burglarized and the burglars stole from me over three hundred graded cards, including over two hundred PSA graded cards and approximately one hundred USA graded cards.

Among the PSA graded cards were over 140 of the 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks (blue background) parallel autograph cards. If the burglars have not taken the cards out of their slabs, the cards were all PSA graded and each has a sequential number on the back between 0001 and 0100.

I will pay a small reward in cash or cards to anyone who can help me recover some or all of my cards.

Among the cards stolen from me in the burglary were:

1.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Barry Bonds sequentially numbered on the back # 0046 and graded PSA 7;
2.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Barry Bonds sequentially numbered on the back # 0100 and graded PSA 7;
3.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Roger Clemens sequentially numbered on the back 0023 and graded PSA 7;
4.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Nomar Garciaparra sequentially numbered on the back # 0096 and graded PSA 8;
5.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Greg Madduz sequentially numbered on the back 0095 and graded PSA 8;
6.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Cal Ripken, Jr. sequentially numbered on the back # 0035 and graded PSA 8; and,
7.) 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks Alex Rodriguez sequentially numbered on the back # 0037 and graded PSA 7.

Also, ten of my 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks were sequentially numbered # 0002; I will like to find any of my cards or any other 1998 Signature Series Century Marks sequentuially numbered 0002.

Anyone who can help me locate my cards stolen in the burglary has my sincere appreciation!!!!

  • That sucks. Did you list the theft on the other boards? There was another theft of a bunch of high end slabbed comics books that were stolen up north (Mountain View area). Hopefully you find the perps who stole them or at least get them back.

    EBAY is the best place for us all to watch.

    I have printed your list. I will keep watch.

    I guess you called the cops and made a report.

    You can also check local pawn/card shops. A
    reward flyer handed to such businesses will
    sometimes result in the dealer acting responsibly.

    call a few of the card stores around, i am sure they are few and far between. Ask of they have seen them, you may be surprised. I do't know the value of the cards, but I know they are not your average run of the mill commons. A dealer would remeber seeing them, especially if some guys who really didnt know about them was trying to sell them

    Being a Sacramento native myself, I can tell you that there are few card stores left in Sac. Grab the yellow pages and make a few phone calls. Other than that, watch Ebay... and Craigs List.

  • That really sucks man, i'm very sorry that happened. I will definetly keep my eyes opened on ebay, and other sites too, which I drop in one in a while.

    I know it dosen't matter at all on the dollar amount, whether it was $100 or $100,000, but did you have a lot invested in it? I sure hope you didn't, but the cards that are numbered will probably pop up at some point, and they will be caught.

    Yeah man, i'll definetly look for them on ebay. Again, sorry about that.

    did you have them in your registry? that way if a person even an innocent one tries to enter them in a new registry you would be notified and could contact PSA/authorities.

    As a fellow Sacramentoian I am especially sorry to hear that. As stated above check the Bay and Craigslist. I would keep an eye on Sacramento craigslist as well as Bay Area, Stockton, etc.... GOOD LUCK!

    Hi Mark

    I'm really sorry to hear about this.

    A lot of people here buy and watch out for stuff like this - so perhaps there'll be some assistance.

    Good luck - chances are some of it will wind up on ebay - eventually.

    Damn. I'm really sorry to hear that. For anyone that doesn't know, those Century autos are *very* tough. They may be numbered to 100, but I just paid $60 for a Will Clark. (Most Clarks numbered to 100 go for maybe $15 or so.)

    Here's what they look like, for anyone not familiar with the issue:

    Stuff like this really fires me up! How about cert numbers? Lets keep this thread bumped up.
  • I didn't see any at the local Frank and Sons card show this past weekend down in southern California.

    That really blows . . .

    Let me ask a question though , if they were PSA/DNA'd that would still be another way of identifying your cards too right ?

    I can't see you not geting at least the numbered cards back ,

    If they're all DNA'd I can't see you not getting back all of them . .

    I don't see a collector going and robbing someones house , that's not usually the way we want to get our stuff , but I guess there are exceptions to every rule , did they just take cards ?

    Sounds more like a crackhead move and they will definitely sell em, I will definitely look out , no doubt . . .

    Any reward ??
    I value my neck a lot more than three thousand bucks, Chief. I'll find him for three, but I'll catch him, and kill him, for ten.

    I'll tell you one thing , probably a stupid move on the person's part that stole sequentially numbered cards , don't you think ?

    I mean that is positive I.D. to the 3rd power .

    There is no way we can't find these cards unless it is a collector and never plans on selling them , which I highly doubt is the case .

    I was just kidding about reward part too , I just saw that oportunity to use something from a different thread , to honor the Great Roy Scheider , <~~ Did I spell that right ? < Shrug > even though that wasn't his part .

    Bump .

  • That is a great question, was it only cards stolen? If so, I would think the worst and say maybe a collector somewhere? Like you said, could probably a crack head looking for a few bucks and they will definetly sell it, and then maybe the person who buys it puts it on ebay, but you just never know.

    Is it possible for you to put an entire list, including psa serial numbers, card serial numberings and so on? Pleanty of people will be more than happy to search ebay and other places for you, including myself. Pictures I guess would help too, if you have them saved of your computer of course. You can always spot an autographed card, even if its not serial numbered, because some players will sign different everytime, or at least a little different to were you can spot it.

    Again, I am very sorry this had to happen to you for me to learn my lesson. I went to a few banks today to find out about a safety deposite box, and I went ahead and purchased one for the year. Like I said, sorry I had to learn my lesson from your loss, but it definetly got me thinking and worried, so better safe than sorry.

    Its not like I have a ton of cards or anything anyway, or a hube value to them, but my cards are just to rare, and very hard to replace, so its worth it. I only have about 100 cards or so, and their all autographs, and many of them are serial numbered, so I guess they would be easy to keep a track of. Thats why its good for people to have pictures saved on your computer in case, sometimes even if there not serial numbered.

    Hope all works out for the best for you!

    Giovanni

    As someone who had his entire vintage (and expensive) Hockey collection stolen over 13 years ago, I symphasize with your loss. Hopefully, you will recover most of your items, but if not, not let it sour you to the hobby. It took over 10 years before I regained the interest to start collecting again.
  • Hi, my name is Mark Soble in Sacramento, and I started this thread.

    Thank you all for your kind responses. Well, at least most of the responses were thoughtful and nice. I did have a safe deposit box, but my baseball cards were at home so I could enjoy them. I still have color scans of some of the cards.

    The burglars stole stuff other than cards. I have every reason to assume that the burglars were dopers not card collectors. I am searching eBay and other internet and physical sites but all the eyes that can help are truly welcome and thanked.

    The cards that were 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks parallel autograph cards are listed in the PSA Registry, "Mark's Century Marks". Some of the star cards are worth each many hundreds of dollars, the cards would stand out at local Sacramento card stores and pawn shops. As mentioned before, the cards have sequential numbers on the back - I have all those numbers - and PSA slab numbers and I have those numbers too. Some of my other stolen cards were on the PSA Registry but the bulk of the non-Century Marks were not.

    I am offering a cash reward equal to ten percent of the value of the cards that your information helps me to physically recover, of course if I get multiple tips on an eBay listing were I get automatic emails from eBay, I'll have to judge it one instance at a time and divide up the reward. The total value of my collection was probably around $12,000. I doubt that the burglars could sell the cards locally for more than a small fraction of what their worth to anyone but me.

    Thank you for looking for my stolen cards,

    I wish you all the best Mark.

    I always worry about my stuff when I go away - even tho we have an alarm that's supposed to alert the police.

    My better stuff gets removed from the house.

    And - I agree with the safety deposit box - I'm in a hobby - not investment game - if I can't look at the stuff when I want - any time of day or nite - I would rather collect rocks or something.

  • Hi, this is Mark Soble again, the one who was burglarized. I have attached the front and back image of the one PSA-graded 1998 Donruss Signature Series Century Marks card that I had on January 3, 2008 that was NOT stolen.

    Thank you again to anyone and everyone who happens to occasionally glance to see if a 1998 Donruss Century Marks card might be one of the ones stolen from me.

    Best wishes,

    Also, a friend of mine is a local dealer here in Danville, CA. Send me a pm and I'll give you his phone# so you can contact him. He knows just about every dealer in NORCAL so maybe he can help you alert the local guys.

    I'll check out eBay as well and keep an eye out. The thief will most likely keep the cards hidden for a year or two and then sell them out of state.

    Good luck man.
