Catching an ebayclown (ras3172) in a lie.....

So I message a guy with a bunch of star basketball team sets and ask him if he has a few sets that I need (84 Jazz, Rockets, 76ers, Celtics). He says he does and asks me to make an offer. I offer $200 which is admittedly a little bit of a lowball offer, but it never hurts to ask. He messages me back this:

i have sold several of these over the past couple months- i have sold about 6 of these bags for between $100-150 each. if you can buy them for what you are asking- go for it because that is a deal! and they are selling for a lot more than they have over the past 2 years- i just sold a bulls jordan bag for $1800- i just sold a 84 76ers bag and jazz bag for $150 each.

Now, I have ebay marketplace research which allows me to go back 3 months, so I find his auctions and respond with:

Now you're just lying to me.

Here's your $150 Jazz bag: http://cgi.ebay.com/JOHN-STOCKTON-ROOKIE-84-85-STAR-JAZZ-UNOPENED-TEAM-BAG_W0QQitemZ130187819055QQcategoryZ28094QQssPageNameZMKTRSRCH:CLIST:ITQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And your $150 76ers bag: http://cgi.ebay.com/CHARLES-BARKLEY-ROOKIE-STAR-84-85-SIXERS-UNOPENED-BAG_W0QQitemZ130190352888QQihZ003QQcategoryZ28094QQssPageNameZMKTRSRCH:CLIST:ITQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for being blatantly dishonest. I just added you to the list of people I will never buy from. Good luck with your dishonest business practices.

If you don't feel like going to the links, he sold a 76ers bag for $120 and a Jazz bag for $76. I just hate people who lie to make themselves sound like reasonable human beings, when in fact the lies they make up tell the story of who they truly are.

Typical for some guys trying to make money, someday they will realize that it does pay to be honest more often than not.

This is the kind of stuff that bugs me. Why is it that so many people stretch the truth to their advantage so often? It's so common on ebay that we tend to overlook a lot of it. I try to be as honest as possible on ebay, and don't even care to sale raw cards due to the fact that it is hard to be 100% fair and honest with raw cards.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I watched an episode of that new show called Moment of Truth or something like that, where they ask people questions and if the polygraph says they're lying, they lose. So, all you have to do is tell the truth and you win a lot of money and people still can't do it. How freaking crazy is this world where you get rewarded for telling the truth? Shouldn't it just be natural?

Did you watch last night, when it was an obvious yes or no answer and the polygraph said he was lying? I truly believe he was telling the truth and the machine got it wrong. The producers know ahead of time which of the 50 questions each contestant got wrong. Then they arrange the questions so that somewhere between the 12th and 16th question, there is a wrong answer.

In my opinion, the only way to win that game is to purposely answer a question or two wrong in the initial 50 questions, and then change your answers to the correct answers if and when they come up in the actual show. This would be the only way to be able to keep the producers on their toes.

Then when called on it they claim you misunderstood them or you were on meds.

I agree, just once I'd like to open up an auction and not have to read so much BS.

I want only the facts and nothing else.

Thanks Nick, I can always count on your support. Anyway, I told the jackass about this thread just to ruffle his feathers a little more. All I did was make a lowball offer (if you consider 70% of what they're worth lowball) to see if he'd bite, and if he responded at all reasonably, I would've upped my offer. Instead he comes back at me and says he's sold these at ridiculously unreal prices and I called him out on it. I love when people get caught in lies then get upset at the people who caught them. Kind of like in poker when I snap off someone's bluff and they go crazy asking how I could make such a bad call.

At least he replied with a coherent sentence. Some guys do everything but.

Lee - you're such an a-hole. Why would you go through someones feedback to bust them in a lie? What does it prove? That you have time on your hands? This guy probably sold a hundred of these for $150 each and you found one example where he didn't. Ask him... I bet he's sold a hundred, maybe a thousand. Next time, make a reasonable offer of at least 75%. You're so cheap. Always trying to get deals and whatnot. You should be ashamed.

In the end, the buyer ALWAYS sets the price. ALWAYS.
  • CDsNutsCDsNuts Posts: 10,092
I also hate when a seller has a price in mind that they want for something but asks the buyer to make an offer. Like any buyer is going to offer more than market value for anything. If you have an idea of what a fair offer is, then make that your asking price. I hate haggling like I'm at a flea market in 1989.
  • You know I'm going to have to make him an offer for $195 now...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
