Reached 50% on my 1933 Goudey Indian Gum set!

I am super stoked! After less than a year of collecting, I reached 50% on my favorite set, the 1933 Goudey Indian Gum. Also, I've moved into 5th current and all-time finest. This is not easy with 216 cards in the set. My GPA is lower than most of the other regestrants, but I don't want to wait 5-10 years to try an complete the entire set in high-grade (there are some extremely tough low-pop cards in this set). I'd rather reach 100% and upgrade as I go along or when completed. I got probably 60% of my slabs through raw submissions from mostly bulk raw ebay purchases, and I have another 40-50 still to submit to PSA.

Take a look here:

I should have some more scans up this weekend.

congrats!!! One of my all time favorite non-sport sets! No easy task. Have you seen both Blue and green backs? If so what is the diffrence, weren't some issued a few years later?
  • Thanks! It is a very confusing set to collect, but it also makes it more interesting. The 1933 cards have green writing on the back (technically, the cards were issued between 1933-the late 30s). I've read that if you tried to collect every 1930s variation, there are well over 400 cards. For example, cards 25-48 were also made with blue panels on the front (series 48), and several of the high numbers have a variation of a white background (series 312). The other variations involve the series number on the back. For example, cards 1-24 were printed in series 24, 48 and some in series 96. All possible series are 24, 48, 96, 192, 216, 264, 288 and 312. The numbers really don't make much sense since there are high number cards with series 48 on the back. Some cards were produced in multiple series and some in only one series. Like I said, very confusing. It doesn't matter much though, since PSA does not yet distinguish between the multiple variations. For me personally, I'm not going to try to get all 400+ variations. I'm shooting for the complete set 1-216, plus all the blue panel variations (25-48) and all the high number white background variations (I have yet to figure out how many there are).

96 of the cards were reissued in 1947 with black writing on the back. I only collect the 1930s Goudey. Although I have begun working on non-sport "player" sets and may need to pick up a few of the 1947s eventually.

  • If you check the pending set registry "player sets", you will see Geronimo, Sitting Bull and Chief Joseph listed.
  • Congratulations. I know what it's like to put together a vintage Non-Sport set. I just hit 70% on my Horrors of War set.

Congrats - that's a tough set. If you really want to push the issue, you could contact Joe about defining the color variations on the slab. Then you could collect the set longer!

Lay year I completed my 1951 Bowman "fight the red meance" set. I have been toying with the idea of seeling it, however I dotn think it would be worth all the time, effort, and costs I put into it. Any complete sets sell, beside the super high grade one a few months ago?
  • MorrellMan, I've thought about asking PSA to start identifying the variations, but my top priority was getting PSA to set up non-sports player registry sets (which are now in process). Maybe later I will ask about the 1933 Goudey variations. Even if PSA does not make any changes, it won't stop me from collecting the blue panels and white background cards. The top registry sets list the variations in the comments section, which I will probably do too. Also, it is a bit of a slippery slope. I am only interested in the obvious variations on the card front, but there are even more variations of series #. Some collectors collect the series # variations. For example, cards 1-24 from series 24 sell for much higher than cards 1-24 from series 48 or 96. If PSA started listing the series # variations, then a master set would be 400+ cards. Whereas a master set with the most obvious frontal variations would be less than 300 cards. Could there be two master registries?

WarHound, good luck with your Horrors of War set! That is one tough set at 288 cards. I like your scans. They will never make another set as brutally honest as that one.

GOPinMA, those are some beautiful cards. Late 40s and early 50s Bowman has some of the best artwork ever. I have a bunch of 1949 Bowman Wild West for my non-sport player sets. I have no idea how much sets have sold for recently. Is your set on the registry?
