Some crackout crossover results ...

Sent in some Canadian coins that I cracked out of ICCS and CCCS holders, plus 1 PCGS that just screamed "resubmit!" All were purchased during the summer and fall of 2007 knowing that I would send them in for my registry set. All have what I thought was the right look for the type and assigned grade.

CCCS 1921 1c MS62 Red - PCGS Questionable color, agreed probably shellaced (sp) at one time and cleaned / retoned, color is close to mahogany and streaky, hoping for 62RB thought BB for color.

CCCS 1928 25c MS63 - PCGS MS62, nice strike with slightly mottled grey color.

ICCS 1921 1c MS60 trace red - PCGS MS64RB, WOW!!!, this piece had that oily look found on some ICCS coins so I gave it a bath in acetone and the color / lustre brightened, thought 62RB.

ICCS 1940 5c MS64, 1941 5c MS63, 1950 5c MS63 - PCGS 64, 63, 63 - OK. Also sent in a 1947, 47 ml, 50, 51 bought raw but they looked like the ICCS pieces - PCGS 63, 64, 58, 58 oops!

ICCS 1896 10c EF40 (old holder) - PCGS AU50, expected EF45 strong braid details.

ICCS 1951 10c MS64, 1961 10c MS65 - PCGS 64 on both, not surprised.

ICCS 1871 50c VF20 - PCGS VF30, can't explain this one except to say very clean surfaces for a VF.

ICCS 1955 $1 Arnprior w/breaks MS63 - PCGS MS62, thought this was an easy 63.

Finally, a 1st for me. PCGS 1900 1c MS62RB - no way, no marks on it, it blows away my 63BN - cracked it out - now PCGS 64RB, Yes!

Some went up some went down as expected but each coin has a lesson to be learned. For me my eye for Vicky is conservative while Geo VI is a carp shoot. And I still have a lot to learn in grading nickel. The old addages "buy the coin not the holder" and "learn to grade the series you collect" are true.

Funny about the ICCS as I have seen this as well on a couple of Vicky Brit issues - has anybody noticed this oily problem besides us and wonder if the plastisizer "sweats" a bit of this residue, but more in warm climates and not in the frozen tundra up there??

Nice grades, Gene! I wonder if the possible residue of the ICCS flip is the reason why the blast-white 1949 Dollar I had toned when the flip broke and the coin was exposed to the elements (still being in the flip) for a couple of years. It developed a "haze" that, if you turn it towards the light, became rich red toning:

    Haze tilted to the light:
