OK - My first thread - My T3 trade and a Pleasant Email

I thought I would start with a funny story of a trade I made that went very well and the not so friendly email I received relating to said trade.

As I said - my PSA 6 Doyle was traded - it was a beauty - I still miss it a bit.

I had been offered trades before but wanted to hold onto it - but then on the advice of a friend and T3 aficionado, I consented.

As soon as I took the card off the registry, I got this email - now I'm gonna have to clean it up - don't want to make this the shortest return in history!!!!

<< <i>Email:
Mike,

Several months ago I was begging you to sell your PSA-6 Doyle card to me and you refused by saying that you liked that card so much.
You sold that card you lousy mother.... without giving me a chance to match any offers.
I hope that the money you received for this card will stick in your f'in throat.

Best wishes
YOUR FRIEND XXX >>

I immediately replied:

<< <i> dear XXX
i'm sorry you feel that way
i had no intention of doing anything with the card
i got contaced by a friend who's a dealer who was the
go between for a deal that was very good
the doyle was the most beautiful t3 i had ever seen
but my goal is to work on the set
i did NOT sell the card
i traded it for a 5 doyle and another card - which is
one of the toughest cards in the set by far
i still would rather have the doyle 6 but as i was
advised - this is a deal one can't pass up - maybe i
shoulda considered a squeeze play with counter offers
but didn't - i guess i'm not that saavy - but thanx
for the kind words.

merry christmas
your friend

It's a good deal Mike. You downgraded by one grade and picked up a tough T3 to boot. The other person probably had that extra graded one and saw it as a great deal for him. So, great deal on both ends. Successful transaction, I would say. image

I've seen 'weird' e-mails like that from folks. But, that's pretty wacky. Glad to have you back! image

You made the right move Mike...If it was me and I was collecting the set, I'd have made that trade 1,000 times out of 1,000 chances!!!!! image

Interesting when people try to tell you what to do with the stuff YOU own. Just because they wanted it gives them a feeling of entitlement to it also? What were you suppose to do? Call everyone who said they were interested in the card? Call and ask for other people's permission?

Mike, I know you dont want to name the person but is it anyone who has been on these boards?

You got a great deal and could not lose either way. You did what was right for you so it was the right thing to do.

Finally, just because I offered a 1980 Topps Danny Darwin doesnt mean you had to post my angry email to you! image

Very nice card! I can see why you would miss that. But it sounds like you got a great deal for it at least. I will own a T3 someday. I just don't know when that will be.

    Thanx MD!

I'm moving very slow - I have to stick to budget and there's just other stuff I collect also.

This was my big pickup last year from a prewar collector who has some of the nicest stuff on the planet.

The T3 set is for me - is one of the finest prewar sets on the planet!

That email is awesome for so many reasons. What a complete and total jerkoff. I would've had more choice words for him.

Like you have any allegiance to him or owe him first crack at anything you own. This collecting competition that the registry has sparked is absolutely destroying the hobby and running up prices to the point where the average guy can't put together a nice vintage set. Not that people weren't competitive before, but back then a guy would have an EX card and wouldn't care that much about upgrading to an EX-MT. Now people are sending nasty emails to guys if they have the gull to not sell them their cards because they're desperate to move up to #4 overall on the registry.

<< <i>Interesting when people try to tell you what to do with the stuff YOU own. >>

I totally agree and it's crazy. I had a jerk one time tell me I had to accept his offer because he had already made deals to sell my cards. HAHAHA. When I told him to go pound sand, he said he would never buy from me. Another joke. Lee is right the registry has brought out the testosterone.
  • stone...t3's have really escalated in the value the last year largely due to more collectors jumping into the bandwagon. I've got a limited budget as well, so im taking your approach...slow and easy. i got a cobb recently, so that should tide me over.

An advanced T3 collector like the guy in question should know better than to ask permission to start negotiations. He should have made an offer to blow you out of the water.

Tell the guy that has no chance of that happening to you, seeing that this past Sunday was St.Basil's day and you had your throat blessed.

    Then tell him -------------- off.

    Steve

    Good for you.
