Would you buy this 1977 topps baseball deal?

I have a chance to buy a 77 topps vending box for $60. Here is the deal. The dealer openly said he has looked through the cards. He says they are vending fresh and in the original vending box. He said he has removed one card and that was a Jim Rice he graded and was hoping for a 10. He says there are tons of stars and at least one Murphy rookie. I think it sounds like a fair deal. I mean even if the stars are only $2-$5 variety it seems like that is good. What do you think, buy it or no?

If I bought it, I would be buying it for the purpose of maybe grading 4-8 cards and using the rest to join more of my mint 77s and make a second set.

$60 sounds fair to me. If I was into '77s I would buy it.

For $60 you may as well pick it up. You may luck out and get a few low pop commons or a star or two.
I've opened two vending boxes from 77 and have had decent luck with the condition. It seems like the edges from vending are rougher than from packs, but it might have been the one's I opened.

For 60 bucks, why NOT pick it up?

Not a bad gamble - is this on ebay or local or what?

I'ld take the chance - vending fresh really isn't all that descriptive - what were the corners like and the centering - sometimes an entire box can be a mess or really good.

Good luck - I'm looking forward to seeing how ya do?

If that was a 1976 box (and everything else was the same) I'd take it in a heartbeat.

If only one card was sent in for grading, I'd guess the rest or either dinged or OC. $60 doesn't seem too bad though.

That's not always the case. I bought two 1978 Topps baseball vending boxes from BBCE a few months ago, and only pulled out what I thought would be 9's or 10's, so I have two vending boxes 90% filled with NM and NM-MT cards (as well as MINT that are slightly OC) that someone building a raw set would probably love to own.

This is not a solicitation to sell my 2 vending boxes, I'm just making a point that the last post isn't always the case.

Totally agree - if ya just want to put a nice nm/nm-mt set and centering doesn't have to be pristine, the odds are good you'll be happy.

Just for balance tho - I've bought vending where just about every card was OC - my thread on 83T BB last year - e.g. - it was very disappointing - overall 4 boxes and tons of OC cards - now for a set to view in a binder? They look great.

IMO - anything unopened - whether it be vending, wax, rack or cello - is a crap shoot - but it sure is fun! image
