What sort of Chinese Cast Coin do I have here?

This is one of four very similar that my father gave me.

Let me see if I can post the picture....

It's Chinese and minted from 1821-1874. If you show us the other side we can tell what mint it came from.

Yep, it's a coin of the Dao Guang Emperor (1821-1850), also known as "Tao Kuang". The coin can't be dated any more precisely than that. The mintmark is for the Board of Revenue mint in the capital, Beijing. Made by the millions, they're still very common today.

For Chinese coins of this period, the main difference between the coins of the various emperors are the two characters at the top and bottom; the two characters at left and right are almost always the same.
Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.
    Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius, "Meditations"

Apparently I have been awarded one DPOTD. B)
