Half Point Poppage

I was eagerly waiting my first submission under the new half point grading. Now that I have it, I can't even comment on it. I only received 3 half point grades out of 99 cards. I don't know if that is any indication of anything since I don't have the cards in my hand to look at. I have to admit that I was expecting more not based on pure percentages but rather I thought there were several 8.5 candidates. By no means am I complaining about the grading. I am quite happy with the overall results.

Wow, looks like they are starting off by being very selective of the .5 huh..

    When were these submitted?

  • Were these reviews or just raw grading?
  • They were received in early Dec. When I saw the announcement on the half point grading I contacted PSA to see if I could hold my oders as I had several in at PSA. They were able to hold most of my submission but two were too far down the line to hold. This was the first one to pop.

I'm not sure if I would say there are stingy yet. I do know that the 64 Philly and 61 Topps cards were very nice. I am a little surprised that there were no 8.5's or even 9's in the 61 Topps lot. I will reserve judgement until I have the cards back. Hopefully, my other submissions will pop soon so I have more cards to reference and can educate myself on what gets the .5 bump.

  • BGG,

They were all raw. I won't do any reviews until A) I have a good idea what deserves a .5 bump and B) there is a compelling reason to get a bunch of commons reviewed for .5 bumps.

    Nice sub.

My take from their description was that 8.5's would be cards that "just missed" being 9's, but I guess time will tell. I would be disappointed, though, if they gave .5's to cards with obvious corner touches even if they're perfectly centered. That would be pointless since centering is the one factor that can be clearly identified in a scan.
  • For those people that were worried that either .5 grades would be handed out like candy or that the .5 grade would be a safety net for the next highest grade (i.e. many 9's would be conservatively graded as 8.5's) it certainly does not appear to be the case. I received 21 PSA 9's and only 2 PSA 8.5's. Not too many 8.5's considering I thought there would be several candidates.

I don't think anyone will ever know for sure if an 8.5 is an over graded 8 or an under graded 9.

Edited to add: Don't forget that looking for that extra .5, or taking away a .5 for that matter, is new to the graders too. They are used to looking at a card with a single digit in mind.
  • I don't think it works that way. They look for the single digit grade first and then assign a potential .5

    Doug:

I've heard an increasing number of stories whereby there are very, very few .5s given out by PSA. Obviously you have an eye for quality -- as your grades attest. I must admit, that this grade point paradigm perplexes me somewhat.

It seems as if 5% or fewer cards across the boards are receiving any bumps and/or half-grades...so PSA is obviously not using a 19-point scale...it is a 10 point scale, with the half-point grades as exceptions. But I have yet to see a clear definition (not in grading standards...but in actual card quality) of that which will knock a card from a 9 to an 8, but will exhibit enough strength to have the 8 be an 8.5. Clearly centering helps...but it is much more than that.

You're points are well taken (aside from the fact that there are 18 grades, not 19 image )
Just guessing, and knowing that PSA never really felt they needed any more than 10 grades - I would suspect that half grades will be handed out very judiciously. I agree that those of us who have been able to determine with pretty good accuracy what a grade would be on a 10 point scale still have very little idea what would qualify for the half point. Sliders down a half or sterling examples only half way to their proper grade?

If half point grades are going to be handed out this infrequently, it begs the question whether it is worth sending any cards in for reviews. If the batting average is going to be less than 10% - even for those who carefully select their reviews - it is flat out not worth it.

I just got my grades done two days ago and out of 78 cards, I received one half grade. I don't know how the half grades are determined either. Here is my invoice if anyone wants to post it.

Why have .5 grades if they aren't to be used?

  • With the .5 grades I don't believe a card will get knocked from a 9 to an 8 (or 8.5). The card either meets the same MINT criteria as the past or it doesn't which will result in a grade less than 9. I'm not sure how concrete a definition you could come up with that would determine what makes an x.5 versus a straight x. My assumption is that is demonstrates extremely strong attributes for the x grade but does not deserve the x + 1 grade. Perhaps a few additional guidelines might help but I don't think they would change my approach. I would much rather have the .5 grade be the exception rather than the norm as I think that can really help the value of the cards with the .5 grades. Trying to determine a percentage of .5 grades at this time is pointless while everyone is getting used to the new system (collectors, dealers and graders). As for me, I am not even considering sending in waves of reviews until there is a compelling reason to do so. Without any pricing history I don't know which cards will benefit from a .5 increase (outside of increased registry points). I have about 1,000 cards in at PSA right now. Some of them will come back with .5 grades. That will begin my education process on what cards are deserving of .5 grades. The invoice I posted was not sent in to test the new .5 grading system. They were raw cards that I remember some of the groups being quite strong. I received several 9's, three holy grails and very few .5 grades. That would lead me to believe that 9's are not going to 8.5's and you really need a sharp card to get an 8.5. That's using a 100 card sample. When I get to 1,000 cards then I may be able offer more valuable insight. My path to collecting is slow and steady. The .5 grading will only benefit me in the long run.

Since PSA made such a big deal regarding resubs it may be there that we may see a higher pct of .5 grades. With that said I have stated since day 1 I think less then 15% will get such bumps.

As for the raw subs that we have seen thus far it appears that the .5 grade is hovering around the 5% level.

I also think we will see such grades with cards where the spread between grades is substantial.

Of course all the above is simply my opinion.

If I had cards that looked strong for the grade and had a substantial spread with Price between grades I'd send those cards in without blinking an eye.

Sadly I don't think I have such cards (not saying i do not have strong for the grade cards) i simply don't have cards that i feel have a substanial enough spread with price for in between grades to justify me sending any in.

I will continue though, to send in raw examples, and going forward i see the .5 grading system as a more presice way of grading my cards.

    I received 1 .5 grade out of 50 on a raw submission
  • Packcollector---------- that's revealing. How many 8's and below full grades did you end with ? I'm watching this closely as all of you are to see what happens . Will we see 8.5's more often eventually , especially in modern cards. The 2007 Topps are tough to find 10's much less really good 9's because of the black color -- Many of the cards that I see with these are strong 8"s-------- but will they grade 8.5 immediately if they deserve it , or will they end up at 8 instead?

I don't see routine .5's coming out the first time through------ sooooooooooo------- will I bump moderns just for a slight nudge in the registry sets> Not likely. image
