Question concerning Becket/PSA difference?

I have a quick question about how PSA encapsulates cards in the grading process.

I have noticed that there is "wiggle room" in a PSA holder; in other words, the card can move around within the holder. Beckett, on the other hand, initially places the trading cards into a plastic sleeve before then being slabbed.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about why one company does it one way, and why another would do it another way... but it just seems to me, that one would want the card secure from moving around in its case. Why doesn't PSA keep the card "locked in" to its protective holder?

I'm not some BGS fan coming here to ruffle feathers... it's a genuine question that I would be interested in knowing the answer too. For all I know, maybe there are theories that the sleeves in BGS holders might damage the cards worse than having the card move around a little within its case, I really don't know.

  • Very good question!

I used to be a BGS freak, especialy with that whole inner plastic sleeve thing. I've come to learn that PSA is a much better company all around, and it would be very hard for the cards in their holders to get damaged. You would have to drop a PSA holder from the roof of your house for your card to get damaged, not if you just store them away in a box or whatever.

Who knows with those BGS inner sleeves, maybe they do damage cards? Maybe not, but BGS is a worst company to deal with, and they only think about themselves. My experience anyway, but PSA in the other hand as been good in everyway! image

You should be fine with PSA. After all, your not gona be playing with your cards are you? Maybe throwing them in the air, playing catch with them, or anything else like that? image

Trust me, you couldn't be a bigger freak about those inner sleeves than me, but here I am now with PSA, and won't be changing anytime soon, or maybe ever. It would definetly be cool for PSA to come out with the inner sleeve, and they probably will in the suture, but if they don't, they should definetly give the option image

Some guy ran an experiment where he put a PSA card in a paint mixer for a half hour and no damage was done to the card, so apparently the extra space will not damage the card.

Think of it like boxers vs. briefs.

Personally, I'm a boxers kinda guy. Let things hang while still being secure; not all crunched up and restricted.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

I have a very vivid imagination so too much room can be embarassing, I need everything all crunched up so "zipper schrapnel" doesn't fly across the room

  • To tell you the truth, I sort of take comfort in the fact that my cards have some "wiggle room" in a PSA holder. That way I know for sure that they are free of being pinched or squashed between parts of the plastic holder.
