ESPN says Manning to Tyree is the greatest play in SB history

ESPN says Manning to Tyree is the greatest play in SB history. I don't know if it is the greatest play, but it sure was awseome. Opinions?

It's right up there in the top 5. My wife is not a huge sports fan but we both were amazed that Eli got out of that sack and that the receiver held on to the ball. It's hard to think of any plays that are defintely better than that one.

    Top 5.

Top 1 was the final play tackle at the goaline Rams/Titans.

The guy caught it with his head. It was good effort, but he pinned it to his head. It ranks right up there with the ball that got jammed in Jerry Rice's facemask. The Eli getting out of the sack part was amazing though.

the entire play is up there - Manning getting free and the catch. right up there with Swann's catch
  • Swann made 2 great in the same game ,the one down the sidlines I think may have been the best.

I remember a very similar play in Superbowl XXXII

Elway in the grasp and wiggling away to get a hefty pass off to Ed Mc Caffrey, McCaffrey went way up to get the ball and he knew he was going to take a shot , but he still held onto the ball .

That play was unbelievable last night , the catch was lucky , Eli getting away from the sack was the will to win .

    Great game !

I really can't believe Belichick didn't go for the tie though , I mean really , that was a dumb call, I really don't know what defense he was watching last night but it wasn't the Giants .

    Strange call indeed
  • It will be one of the top plays but it's hard to definitively call one the best.

The play where Elway kept the ball, got hammered and spun around in the air is one I'll never forget.
  • I nearly broke an armchair during that play!

Agreed. When I saw that play I went ape sh*t and my kids thought the house was on fire. But I don't think it's #1 of all time.

    Another great play !

At the goal line too .

He knew he was gonna get hammered but the game was on the line .

I loved watching Elway play , he was my favorite of all time .

Daivd Tyree is, without a doubt, the greatest player in Superbowl history.
  • AllenAllen Posts: 7,165 ✭✭✭
The Elway dive was great. Put it all on the line for a chance to win, I don't need to be able to play next week- its all or nothin in one last game.
  • EstilEstil Posts: 7,199 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well, it was the play that ultimately broke my wife's heart (remember, she's from the greater Boston area), and I will say it's the second biggest upset ever (I still think Super Bowl III was #1) but to call that play "the greatest ever" is really pushing it. Give it a few years for it to sink in and let the emotion from it fade and see how it ranks then.

  • #1 In my Book!
  • I put it in the top .5 of all Super Bowl plays.
“A well regulated populace being necessary to the security of a police state, the right of the government to keep and destroy arms shall not be infringed.”
  • When I try to think about it, there are few plays that are not a FG that really stand out in my memory other than the Elway play I mentioned. The Rams/Titans last play comes to mind but I do recall in that game that Tennessee came back just to watch St. Louis score on a straight go route up the right sideline.

    I AGREE!!!!!!!!!
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

I think the Manning to Tyree play will be remembered for a long time,The catch itself was fantastic and Eli getting away from the rush was awesome. What the play meant to the game and football history means a lot as well. I would rank it right up there with the Marcus Allen run, Definitely in the top five.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, how long is this Roman Numeral cr*p gonna continue? When it was Super Bowl X, for example, that was kind of cool, but now at XLII it's really pretty stupid at this point. Super Bowl 48 is going to be XLVIII, and Super Bowl 88 will be LXXXVIII. That's completely ridiculous. And do we even need to keep numbering it at all? They don't number the World Series, except for the year, maybe. Just call it the fricking Super Bowl and be done with it! image

The fact that it involved two players making spectacular plays which were beyond comprehension makes it #1 without a doubt.

  • that play was the greatest play in NFL history, not only super bowl history......

add the fact that both the qb and wr made impossible plays, along with the pressure situation, and the enormity of the game, and you have THE BEST PLAY IN NFL HISTORY period

Nah! I'll take the Franco Harris' Immaculate Reception over that play as far as NFL History goes.

Agree with Dan, the Franco Harris catch was just as good if not better then the one the other night.

    That one was awesome too.
