1980 Redbook varieties for Lincolns - Help

Does anyone know which varieties are listed for Lincoln cents? I can guess at the major ones, but what about the 17S DD etc.

Thanks

Well let's see how hard they want to make it to get a 100% red set.

    From my OLD pop report,

    09 s/s there are 82 reds
    17 double die has 5
    22-d weak d has 3
    22 no d strong rev has 3
    22 no d weak rev has 6
    36 Dble die t-I has 3
    36 Dble die t-II has 17
    44 d/s has 40
    55 dbld die has 162
    58 Dble die has 1

  • You mean the 17 Doubled Die right?

Of course PCGS has to add it. They want to add the two MS RD 1922 No Ds, why should they not add the five MS RD 1917 Doubled Die? Maybe they could even hire on some ANACS graders and add another 50 or so of their distinguished varieties? Think of all the money they could make then!!!

I just talk to Steve and Danielle at NGC. NGC will not be adding any varieties to the NGC sets. The only one is the 55DD. The reason is "varieties don't appeal to the mainstream collector". Well said NGC! NGC would love to have you Registry Sets with them! Remember that NGC takes both PCGS and NGC coins!

  • Yep, I ment the 17 double die. sorry for the goof.

I wonder how many dealers have been stocking up on the varieties. It will be interesting to see the impact that it has on the pricing too. Some of them are just so rare that even if you could afford it they just won't be around in any color or grade. (I've never seen any 58 dble die and PCGS just has 1 listed in 64 RD (no brown or RB).

It will be an interesting year. I wonder if all of the optional varieties listed (for all sets) will now become required. Hmmmmmm

The 1979 Red Book lists the following Lincoln varieties: 22 No D, 43 steel,44-D/S, 44-46 shell case, 55 doubled die, 60 sm dates, 70-s sm date, and 72 doubled die. It also mentions large and small mintmark varieties for the 28-S and 41-S.

I think I have the 1980 Red Book, but just didn't feel like scrounging through boxes of books down in the basement.
