This 'one of one' bologne cracks me up...

It amazes me up when I see a card for sale that is numbered to 100 or numbered to 1000 and the stamped number of the card is the players uniform number or the number he wore in college and it's claimed to be a true one of one and therefore worth a monstrous premium. I have a few nice one of one cards myself. I have a Tom Brady card #'d to 2500 and it's stamped number 1977 which I think is the year he was born so it must be worth at least 10x book.image

  • Theres always a premium for a players jersey number. Ok, maybe not 10 times book, but there definetly is a premium.

If there was say a card numbered to 100, and it was a Larry Bird just say for examle, and there was one numbered 57 OF 100, or you the other one is 33 OF 100, which one would you rather have? Thats just how it is, it dosen't make to much sense, but just a little I guess??? lol. image

  • I sold an A-rod Auto a couple of years ago that was numbered 13/50. I was expecting it to hit 250.00. It sold for 400.00 because of its number.

I wonder if coins ever drop in price? I will give you 25 cents for a 1966 50 cent piece with a major ding in the side.

But seriously when I get numbered cards I indeed check to see what the number is because people do collect like that. If you get a Jordan numbered 23/### you are going to get some decent cash.

A buddy of mine is huge into SP authentic football and he has always made refference to the # of the card matching the players uniform #, it is a common fact that it does fetch a premium, same way a multi colored patch does over the the single colored ones.

Yeah, I had some Jordan insert card from the 1999-00 cards, and to my surprise, it was numbered 0001/2300!!!!! That was a great card, I should have kept it. I sold it on ebay for around 100 bucks, when the regular one would have sold for 20 to 30 bucks or so, so yeah, I would say special numbers sell for higher.

I guess the first #, last #, and of course their jersey I would say is number one! And the bigger the serial numbering, the more a special number is worth, such as that Jordan I had that was numbered to 2300.

I still have 3 og those Jordan's left, but their all different numbers like 2174/2300 or something like that image

Actually 'baloney' was first made in the Italian city of Bologna.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

  • I once paid more for a Manning jersey card that had his UT serial number. When I got the card, there was a big problem in that although the seller said it was his number, it wasn't at all. The seller asked how much I felt the serial number had an impact on the sell and they refunded me the amount.
  • lawnmowermanlawnmowerman Posts: 19,477 ✭✭✭✭
I actually avoid Emmitt cards numbered to his jersey just for this reason. I just can't see spending more for a card that regulary sells for alot less.

This "1/1" crap for card not actually stamped as 1/1 has long since been a pet peeve of mine. I never buy when I see a seller use it.

This 1/1 nonsense with autograph cards drives me nuts. The card companies will arrange a signing session with the athlete their featured on their autograph inserts to sit down and sign say 500 cards and they will also have sub sets of his autograph numbered 1/1 or 1/whatever at that same signing knowing full well that it is the come on to collectors of that athlete or set to buy as many boxes as they can to find these "Special Cards". Don't get me wrong I truly love these auto cards but for my collection one auto card is as good as any auto card numbered or not.
  • Hey Art,

While your talking about auto cards I might as well add this. I am a card collector as much as I am an auto collector, so for me, I would rather have the rarer card that is autographed, not a card with a high prit run. I guess for people who collect autos and don't care what card, then fine, thats great, but for me since i'm also a card collector, I would rather have the super rare card that is autographed, not a common card(high print run).

For somebody that collects autos, and couldn't care less about the card, then anything goes, but definetly not for the card/auto collector, only the best card/auto will do. Everybody has their thing they collect, and thats fine, we all have to find whats best for us, and stick with it I guess. image

  • Thats great Sport so let me ask you a question? If PSA grades a "Rare" 1/1 autograph card say from LeBron James and grades it a PSA 6 and grades a "common high print run autograph card" from LeBron and grades it a PSA 10 which one has more value for the "card collector"

  • << <i>Thats great Sport so let me ask you a question? If PSA grades a "Rare" 1/1 autograph card say from LeBron James and grades it a PSA 6 and grades a "common high print run autograph card" from LeBron and grades it a PSA 10 which one has more value for the "card collector" >>

I would think the 1 OF 1 would have more value, only if the auto is Gem, not the card. Actualy if the auto wouldn't be Gem, I still think the 1/1 would command more money, and I myself would want the one of one.

Now, to what your talking about with the Lebron. Ok, here is a Lebron James 1 OF 1 LINKY

And here is a Lebron James regular auto, but I couldn't find a PSA 10 for you, so istead, I thru in a jersey on the card, and I also thru in a card numbered to only 25, and not 1000 of them. So, since its a Mint 9, I think that jersey and serial numbering to only 25 should make up for a PSA 10 regular auto with no jersey and print run of 1000. And heres the link for that one LINKY

Now, with that one of one, we don't even now if enough people were watching. There was probably another 10 people who wanted that card, but wasen't around to see it, or missed or, or whatever. But that other one is in store right now, and still nobody bought it.

I am just trying to make you understand what i'm talking about, and since you gave me an example, I figured to find these cards to show you, so there they are, LOL. image

    Giovanni
  • ??????????? Yup that cleared it up for me.
    Thanks
  • Art,

Heres another example of what your talking about, or almost talking about anyway. I couldn't find graded ones, but there both not graded so it should be fine.

    Heres a Rodman 1 OF 1 LINKY

And heres one of the regular autos your talking about LINKY

I could go on forver baby! image

Look, if your a card collector, and an autograph collector, than you have to get the best card, not just any card thats autographed, but if your an auto collector, than any card goes, and thats fine image

Your telling me something, and i'm trying to make you understand what i'm talking about. Everybody has their own thing they collect, thats fine, no harm in that. I collect certified rare autographed cards image

    I collect cards #666/xxxxx
They are part of my evil collection, they are kind of hard to find for some reason.

I also collect cards #999/xxxxx but those cards are only evil if you put them in the holder upside down.

It's also against Ebay's rules. They specifically banned the practice a year or two ago.
