Wow, obverse in first pic looks to have field rub, contacts and abrasions not apparent in the second.

    Well, just Love coins, period.
  • Nice coins. One question. What is a vip proof? Is it different than an ordinary proof?

VIP proof. A proof coin that was minted in very limited numbers, usually given to important people.

There is probably little difference in how the coins are made.

"Ordinary proofs" were issued to commemorate coronations (1839, a bit late, 1902, 1911, 1937, 1953), new coin designs (1887, 1893, 1927) or some special events (1853 - no idea why, 1950 - half century, 1951 - Festival of Britain). These were made for sale to the general public (well, in most cases, anyway). The only other date for a proof set in Victorian times was the bronze set of 1877, one of the most prized of all.

"VIP proofs" were struck in most years from 1926-1964 (bronze) or 1928-1963 (silver/Cu-Ni) for virtually all denominations of coins that were also made as business strikes. These were very low mintage (on the order of 10 pieces) and were presented to foreign dignitaries, noted heroes and others. None were issued for general sale. On very rare occasions, a full set is offered for sale, such as the 1949 set Dolphin Coins had in a catalog around 10-12 years ago. I believe that the British Museum has an example of every year struck.
