The NY Giants Will Be Great For Years

Regardless of what happens on Sunday I think that the New York Giants will be great for years to come. The Giants and Green Bay Packers are the youngest teams in the NFL.

The 2007 Giants were never perfect nor meant to be. They were fighters, scrappers....now they could be called something else, World Champions."

I dunno. The Pats' amazing run notwithstanding, I think glory is more fleeting in the NFL than it is in any other league. The Giants and Pack do seem to have a bright futures, but the league seems to be structured in a way to promote precipitate declines - as well as meteoric rises - in franchises' fortunes. Which is probably why it's supplanted baseball as the American Pastime.

Toomer will be gone soon, and Plex is very inconsistant. The Giants D is old too. Favre is old too, and then what? Are the Packers
even a .500 team with Rodgers? no

The Giants had a great draft last year, they have a young and improving QB who has led them to a NFL all time record of 10 straight wins on the road, they have a stable of young talented backs, and the average age of this "old" defense even WITH Strahan at 36 years old is 26.29 which is hardly "old" Take away Strahan and the Giants average age at "D" is 25.97. I want to know how many teams are younger at "D" image The Giants will be competitive for at least the next few years.

Yawie99, I think there are two reasons this is true and that it is why it is very very hard for a team to repeat:

    (1) There are far more season ending injuries in football then any other sport. A 17 week season is very short and players don't have time to recover.

    (2) In other sports playoffs are the best 3 out of 5 or 4 out of 7, but in football each playoff "round" is "do or die" so its tougher for a defending champ to advance to the next round, let alone win the Super Bowl again. That is why what the Patriots are doing is simply amazing.

Giants may be great, but the Eagles will be greater. The Eagles are sitting on a monster season this year - no doubt about it. This upcoming season is Super Bowl here we come!

PS: Cowboys go down the tubes this upcoming season - they'll be 8 - 8 if they're lucky.

The NFC East will be tough next year, but the Eagles will finish dead last. Guaranteed.

My how things change in a year. Before this season, Coughlin was close to getting fired, and the Jets had "Mangenius"!!

Injuries and the "any given Sunday" effect definitely contribute to the league's competitive balance. I'd also add the league's system of free agency and its salary cap - not to mention the fact that every NFL team must be flush with cash. With a savvy general manager, a moribund team can reverse its fortunes pretty quickly. However, the Pittsburgh Pirates, for example, appear likely to suck for perpetuity.

And I certainly agree that given the current dynamics of the league, the Patriots' run is incredibly impressive. Even if I am still a little green about their win over the Rams a few years ago.

  • The Giants had 11 Rookies this year. Count 'em. With Spagnuolo back the G-Men just might put together a little Dynasty of their own.

  • I see that stevie was right about dem cowboys.
  • Unless the NFL does some significant restructuring - which they won't - no NFL team "will be great for years". The closest thing this decade has had is the New England Patriots and maybe the Indianapolis Colts, and certainly neither has been great for years.

The NFL does too much to promote parity, and I wish they would stop this:
    1) The teams with the worst records get the best draft picks.
    2) The teams with the worst records get the easier schedules the following season.
    3) Expanding the playoffs from 10 teams to 12.
    4) Shrinking the division size to four teams each, making it more likely team with bad records get in the Playoffs.
    5) More reasons I am forgetting.
    6) Even more reasons that I don't know about.

The game is so popular and televises so well that it will continue to thrive with or without parity. It thrives in this era of relative parity, and it thrived in the '80s when the 49ers were a near-dynasty.

Just look at the Super Bowl Champions since 2000:
    2010: New Orleans Saints
    2009: Pittsburgh Steelers
    2008: New York Giants
    2007: Indianapolis Colts
    2006: Pittsburgh Steelers
    2005: New England Patriots
    2004: New England Patriots
    2003: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    2002: New England Patriots
    2001: Baltimore Ravens
    2000: St. Louis Rams

    8 champions in 11 seasons.

I have to say I like it this way alot better than the '80s and '90s.
The 49ers and Cowboys were like the Yankees and Redsox, yes they were great teams to start with, but they would buy superstars to enhance their teams and most years the rest of the league was on the outside looking in.
Then the MVP was the owner with the biggest wallet.
Now the MVP is the GM who can evaluate talent and know where to put his money.

Who did the Cowboys "Buy" other than D. Sanders in the 90's?
  • recbballrecbball Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭
Charles Haley is a borderline Hall of Famer
  • For what its worth, I Hate "Parity" or whatever the NFL wants to call it. I dont like that every time a QB gets touched its a 15 yd. penality and a bazillion dollar fine. I am the rare fan who actually watches the game because somebody might get hit and the score could stay low because the defense is doing its job. I know that rant is a little off topic but it leads to this, If an orginization is able to build a team and hold it together through the years, they deserve to be called a "Dynasty" and continue to win games year after year. That orginazation should be able to build on their roster and improve each year. The current rules actually help my team, but it still aint right. Enough of my rant, let the boys play ball!
I dont wanna grow up, Im a Toys-R-Us kid!

I liked when the Cowboys were dominant but I can understand how parity makes the league more interesting b/c most fans don't want to see the same teams win every year.

He was the only one that was bought but the salary cap kept them from retaining alot of the guys that left after wining the Super Bowls.
