"K.K." stands for "Kaiserlich und Koniglich", the standard Austrian Imperial abbreviation for "Royal" (literally "Imperial and Royal"). Steiermark is the German name for the Austrian province of Styria; the lion is the coat of arms of that province. "Gartenbau" means "horticulture", and "verein" means union, club or association.

Thus the legend best translates to: "The Imperial and Royal Styrian Horticultural Society".

    What's on the other side?

  • Very neat piece! Was it found with a metal detector? In that case the condition is remarkable.

  • Beautiful coin. I love the designs on foreign coins. Why can't we have them on our coins hear in the states. Some of the new quarters have nice designs but others are just drab.IMHO
