Matte Proof Lincoln's for the week of Jan 30

in PCGS Set Registry Forum
The more I do this, the crazier it gets. Not one, but THREE complete MPL sets minus the VDB are available this week. Two sets are on Ebay, and Brain Wagner Rare Coins has the third which was recently purchased from Forum collector dbemike. The other interesting part of this weeks grouping is the number of RAW examples. If your willing to gamble, you could get lucky, then again… Also this week are a number of lower graded MPL’s, which many of you have been looking for in past weeks. All of this is very refreshing as I expect to see some new additions to the MPL registry because of this weeks list.

As always, if you know of one that is sold on the list or becomes available, just PM me so I can keep the list as accurate as possible. Till next week.

    Hmm.. when i type in the item number given (140202675320) it says the item was ended early by the seller.
    Want to buy an auction catalog for the William Hesslein Sale (December 2, 1926). Thanks to all those who have helped us obtain the others!!!

    Just saw that complete lincoln set that was closed early and did not meet reserve. Interesting to see all the coins in individual holders. I did notice that the 1909VDB Matte proof was NOT in the collection. Whether or not the other 8 coins listed as "proof" were REALLY proof is something we will never know from the pictures. Anyway, it was interesting to look at. Steveimage

    Funny you mention how interesting it was to see the MPLs all in different holders. My set started like that. That was half the fun, trying to juggle them all into PCGS holders, which isn't an easy task. Don't assume any MPL graded by any other company, will go into a PCGS holder, even as a downgrade.

    I did notice that the 1909VDB Matte proof was NOT in the collection.

    Correcto Steve! I asked the guy and he confirmed it did not have a 1909 VDB matte. That is how I knew it had a $8000 reserve. I have emailed him again to ask if he plans to relist the set and specifically, what are the plans for the MPL's. I will post his reply if I get one.

    Hey Mike, my first set of MPL's looked just like that picture. I did have a lower grade 1916, but not the vdb. I didn't get my first one until I was already upgrading the other coins. My best coin in my first "complete" grouping was a Childs 1914 or 1913 in an NGC 66 RB holder if I remember correctly -- it was probably 10 years ago. The coin was really a 65BN (and I mean brown and not colorful). I got a few of them crossed into PCGS holders at lower grades, and eventually sold them off as I upgraded. The next stop was a set of 65-66rbs including the vdb, before I moved into the "realm of the red" LOL (maybe that should be my chosen title if I ever hit 10,000 posts???).

    Doug...this was the day of reckoning, but was pretty well pleased overall. ended up replacing 3 coins and adding the 1916 to finalize the set minus the VDB. Kinda amazing because 5 or 6 years ago, you were lucky to see 10 MPLs a year at the major auctions, even less within my budget.
