SCAM Alert - Anyone else get this?

It made me laugh out loud. I actually replied and said how honored I was that they picked my set. I said "tell me were to ship the cards and I'll get them sent right out to you" so we'll se what happens and I'll post any reply.
p.s. Gotta love that "Executive Assistant to the President" in the sig line............

Dear Sir:

We are working on a coffee style book to come out this Spring. It will be geared toward the new collector and will include what we feel are the top collectibles. We’d like to ask for your assistance and of course give you credit in the book. We would like to scan about 25 cards from your 1975 Topps Baseball set. We would need the 1st and last card, key and star cards as well as any interesting or unique commons. We would of course reimburse you for shipping it to us and also pay for return shipping. We are now up against our deadline. We’ve also asked a couple of the other set registry participants and will feature the set from the one who responds the soonest. Please let me know if you would like to participate and we can make arrangements for delivery.

Thank you in advance.

Sincerely,

Annabelle Caberte

I got this message a while ago too, and so did many others.

And while it looks like a scam, when I checked it out, I was told by Concetta it is legit!

I still wonder though - kind of an odd way to ask people for their cards.

  • why do they need to scan your cards ? doesnt make much sense that they cant accept a scan from the owner

Annabelle is Joe's executive assistant. And they are asking set registry participants to do this. Not a scam at all, although I can understand why you would think it would be.

i would also be that they want the scans or photos to be consistent througout. hence why they want you to send them in.

  • This maybe a legitimate request ie; from a reliable source in "PSA". But it is totally not necessary in order to get the proper scans they need!

I scanned cards for the writer of an SMR article (the 75 Topps Mini article in the October 2007 issue) and they obviously worked out just fine (if you had the pleasure of seeing that article).

The risk involved in just mailing the graded cards out/back to be scanned???..... Simply unecessary! I personally would never send my graded cards out to anyone other than if I sold them or if I was trying to sell them via a legitimate high profile auction house.

Though not likely to happen........ How terrible would you feel if some of your most prized graded cards were lost in the mail or damaged in transit in a situation where someone was simply looking for a scan of the card? NO WAY!

There are better and less risky ways of getting the scans right without sending the graded cards off in the mail.

well its not a mantle rc. its a favre 91 TSC. they are self insured so its just like sending it in for grading. however, they may have higher standards for quality of image that they want for their coffee table book vs SMR mag quality printing.

I know when I submitt figures for my papers they are required to be in certain formats (such as TIF) over others (JPEG) because when the rescale the figures for publication in the journals they will lose resolution if it is in JPEG. Not everyone is highly advanced in scanning technology as othes and for some they see no difference in TIF vs JPEG as an example. But if your images are to be used on a glossy type page I would assume that they would want it to look the same between all images. If you look at the scans in the most recent SMR (84 T FB and Starr Registry sets) the images are far from what I would want in larger higher gloss publication.

  • I understand your point entirely! I still wouldn't send my high valued graded cards in the mail simply to have them scanned and returned. If PSA or anyone else wanted that type of quality scan, they could research (very simple) a local location in which I could bring my own card and have scanned properly and then the scan could be sent to them. Then the card would never have to be mailed anywhere! I may not be so concerned if the value of the card was minimal. I can't see many individuals with graded cards worth thousands of dollars shipping them off to some company just to have scanned for a magazine article. Yes, if the individual is selling the card in a high profile auction. Just for an article? I'd be surprised!

its not for an article its for a book. since psa is on the hook for the insurance then i am fine with it. but your right i wouldnt send in $1000 card.

    Annabelle is legit.

However, were I asked, I wouldn't send any cards in...what if the FedEx truck gets toasted? They couldn't replace your card, then what are you gonna have? I'll bet they'd try to give you SMR value image

Pretty brassy of them to ask folks to send in cards, why not send a scan?

  • PEOPLE PEOPLE! I am sure PSA has FED EX insurance through a private insurer, much like
many people in the COLLECTIBLES business do....just ask and I am sure they will tell you.

I know of many many Coin, Stamp and Sportscard dealers that have insurance for Fed Ex
shipping up to $75,000, some even more. Many are also covered for DSL, Postal Express,
UPS etc etc...like I said, just ask!

Not a scam image. I've already sent Annabelle a card, and it was FedExed back within the week. As others have said, I'm sure it's so they can have some quality control over the scans. They paid shipping and insurance both ways.

LOL, I bet augustaman wants to crawl under a rock about right now. They have been doing this for years.

All you would have had to do is simply give her (or Joe) a call before starting a thread like this.

Edited: And yes, you should feel honored (without the sarcasm).
  • Executive assistant to the President? Wouldn't everyone feel a little better if it said Joe Orlando, President? Good business technique.

  • I think it would make any card worth a dollar or two more, or at least sell a lot easier, so well worth sending in.

When you send them in, send a note along to have them examine if they are worthy of a bump........
