It made me laugh out loud. I actually replied and said how honored I was that they picked my set. I said "tell me were to ship the cards and I'll get them sent right out to you" so we'll se what happens and I'll post any reply.
p.s. Gotta love that "Executive Assistant to the President" in the sig line............
Dear Sir:
We are working on a coffee style book to come out this Spring. It will be geared toward the new collector and will include what we feel are the top collectibles. We’d like to ask for your assistance and of course give you credit in the book. We would like to scan about 25 cards from your 1975 Topps Baseball set. We would need the 1st and last card, key and star cards as well as any interesting or unique commons. We would of course reimburse you for shipping it to us and also pay for return shipping. We are now up against our deadline. We’ve also asked a couple of the other set registry participants and will feature the set from the one who responds the soonest. Please let me know if you would like to participate and we can make arrangements for delivery.
Thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Annabelle Caberte

And while it looks like a scam, when I checked it out, I was told by Concetta it is legit!
I still wonder though - kind of an odd way to ask people for their cards.

I scanned cards for the writer of an SMR article (the 75 Topps Mini article in the October 2007 issue) and they obviously worked out just fine (if you had the pleasure of seeing that article).
The risk involved in just mailing the graded cards out/back to be scanned???..... Simply unecessary! I personally would never send my graded cards out to anyone other than if I sold them or if I was trying to sell them via a legitimate high profile auction house.
Though not likely to happen........ How terrible would you feel if some of your most prized graded cards were lost in the mail or damaged in transit in a situation where someone was simply looking for a scan of the card? NO WAY!
There are better and less risky ways of getting the scans right without sending the graded cards off in the mail.
I know when I submitt figures for my papers they are required to be in certain formats (such as TIF) over others (JPEG) because when the rescale the figures for publication in the journals they will lose resolution if it is in JPEG. Not everyone is highly advanced in scanning technology as othes and for some they see no difference in TIF vs JPEG as an example. But if your images are to be used on a glossy type page I would assume that they would want it to look the same between all images. If you look at the scans in the most recent SMR (84 T FB and Starr Registry sets) the images are far from what I would want in larger higher gloss publication.

However, were I asked, I wouldn't send any cards in...what if the FedEx truck gets toasted? They couldn't replace your card, then what are you gonna have? I'll bet they'd try to give you SMR value
Pretty brassy of them to ask folks to send in cards, why not send a scan?
Al
many people in the COLLECTIBLES business do....just ask and I am sure they will tell you.
I know of many many Coin, Stamp and Sportscard dealers that have insurance for Fed Ex
shipping up to $75,000, some even more. Many are also covered for DSL, Postal Express,
UPS etc etc...like I said, just ask!

All you would have had to do is simply give her (or Joe) a call before starting a thread like this.
Edited: And yes, you should feel honored (without the sarcasm).
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.
When you send them in, send a note along to have them examine if they are worthy of a bump........
