If I had $600k burning a hole in my pocket I could think of a couple other things I would rather do: 1) Pay off mortgage and 2) buy a nice Porsche (maybe even enough for a turbo!).

If you had 600K in your pocket you: 1) Don't have a mortgage and 2) already have a Porsche.

Nothing wrong with having a mortgage, you do benefit tax wise.

With that said didn't the last one sell fro 325.000?

That is quite a price for that card.

    Good for you.

I remember when that card set "amazing" records in the early 90's (?) as the finest known example -- time marches on!

  • I'm no conspiracy theorist or anything, but do you think this could happen? Say you found a gem 10 example of that same card. Do you think you would be under a much more scrutenizing grading process because of the fact that there's only one other example out there and the grading company knows that they could possibly knock the first owner's investment down thousands upon thousands of dollars? Just a thought. I'm just thinking of what would be running through my head if I found a high grade card like that. I know, dream on. image

Or the person just bought it for re-sale? Maybe everybody who wanted that card didn't know it was for sale? So now, with all the publicity, they would see it, and want to buy it if it ever came up for sale for like 1 Million? If I only had a million dollars, I would paid 600K, lol. and sell it later for 1 Million. I think cards is a better investment than buying houses.

That is one buatiful card!!!!!! WOW! image

I remember reading in the Beckett about that card. The original owner insisted that it was not for sale, and the only way he'd even consider selling was for $100K (but most definetly not $50K). Sure enough, he did indeed sell it for that $100K. And why shouldn't this card sell for this much? It's Mickey's real rookie card.

If the pop report does say one, than maybe he knew about it, and got a heads up, and thats why he sold it, to make a big profit before it was to late?

I think I still have that one copy of SMR that had the article about Candy Man Candiotti and his numerous high end cards. He has some very impresssive, high-grade, high-end cards. If I recall, with the sale of this '51 Mantle, Candiotti still has a PSA '52 Mantle as well as PSA 10 of both '53 Mantle and Mays amongst others.
