<< <i>That's a sweet signed Mantle card. I wish I could have afforded to get a Mantle rookie back in 90-93 as I remember seeing several small ads in the Dallas Morning News where he would periodically sign autographs on the weekends. Would have been incredible to get one signed. His son, Danny Mantle (I believe that was his name) would set up at local shows and peddle Mantle signed memoribilia. I bought a few things such as signed balls, signed photo balls, etc, (he even had some balls that had an image of his 52 rookie on it) but have long since sold them all.
Have any of you ever seen one of his 52 Topps cards signed?? What do they go for??
Mike >>
I have only seen his 1951 Bowman RC PSA/DNA. That sold for around 6K and it was in VG condition. I would imagine that the auto would only add a little more to the value of the graded card itself, as Mantle auto'ed a ton of stuff. By comparison, I have seen Ruth and Gehrig auto'ed goudeys mutiply the cards value substantially.
I have seen 2 Topps Mantles signed. The best ones are when the signature was erased and he signed in the box. One about 3 years ago went for like $4800 or so and I really wished I had the money for it. As he said about the Ruth signed cards that Goudey that was up for bids a few months back was a killer card.
are you basing his price from an ebay listing or from his web site? items are less on his web site. on a lay away you are going to pay full price but Levi has lowered his price for me a few times. one reason I would have saved and waited is the question of the economy and how strong the card market is going to be in the next few months or year.
getting a no interest credit card would be a good move. you could probably get one with a free airline ticket with a 5k purchase plus no interest for a year and you'd have the card in your hand.
I see he's accepted the offer so congratulations on getting the card.
Thenavarro-Thats a nice PSA 1,Great color on that one.I'm curious,What if lets say 7 months into this layaway you decide you no longer have interest in the card,Will Levi give you a full refund or just store credit? You might want to clarify that with him.
Did you ever check into the PSA 2 that shaqfu has? Not that I plan to buy one today, but I was curious if he would do a layaway style format for future reference.

I think your terms are acceptable, but I think Levi may require more than 10% up front. If I were the seller though, the fact that you are meeting my full asking price and paying via check or money order (no cc fees) would definitely lead me to accept your offer. Good luck!

News Flash. 1952 Mantle's under the grade of PSA 7 as severely overpriced. I wouldn't touch one of those with a 10 foot pole. The PSA 1's and 2's that are selling for 5-7000 are absurdly overpriced and horrid looking. I'm not saying that the card is not a pillar of the industry, it's just way overpriced. Plus I could not and would not own a card that looked horrible. I would only buy one to quickly turn a profit-and I do mean quickly. The prices of that card will come down.
I don't see how anybody would do a layaway, but if he does, then Congrats man, thats a great looking PSA 1!!!!!!
Thats actualy how I like my cards, I don't like vintage cards in Mint condition, because, after all, why wouldn't I just get a reprint if I wanted that kind of condition, right? I like to see the history in the card, look at the card, and know thats its been used, and part of history, instead of being in prestine condition. But I guess, thats just me, many people would say i'm crazy, lol.

A PSA 7 runs about 35k. If you look at the kind of grades this card sells for most often, you will see that they are almost always grade 4 or less. Because those are the grades that are more affordable for the common collector. The high grades will sell, but not nearly as often as a lower grade in my opinion. This is why I feel that these cards will HOLD their value.

I doubt the price of even low-grade '52 Topps Micks will come down from their current levels. Well, I wish they would, as then I could buy one! No matter, I'll be content with collecting my other Micks.
Isn't there some form of program through CU where they will loan you the money to buy a graded card? Sorry if that's totally inaccurate, but I thought I remembered reading that once upon a time.
<< <i>I don't see how anybody would do a layaway, but if he does, >>
Why shouldn't he on a card like that? I'll betcha weasel Levi probably only has about $1,000 cost in that card, maybe not even that. I can only imagine somebody coming into his card shop with that card raw, and Levi giving the seller the "song & dance routine" about how the card really isn't worth that much because of the creases, etc., and might not even grade, but he'll offer $1,000 bucks for it anyway...sort of in the same manner a car dealer finds every fault with the car you want to trade-in to devalue the car in your mind.
So he accepts the layaway and if the buyer doesn't make the payments he's got the card and the payment money - Levi can't lose. Levi is a very shrewd individual no doubt about that.
Levi has high prices, but he has inventory. I have talked with him a few times and he was very firm on his prices, but he was professional about it. I have never sold to him so I am not sure about that part of it.
So he accepts the layaway and if the buyer doesn't make the payments he's got the card and the payment money - Levi can't lose. Levi is a very shrewd individual no doubt about that.

Isn't that what encompasses a typical layaway payment plan? You can correct me if I'm wrong instead of making silly remarks like "Were you privy to the deal?"
Hey, as long as the buyer is happy with the deal, which he seems to be, that's fine. My comments were directed at some "surprise" that Levi would do a layaway deal, when it shouldn't be any surprise at all - it's good business on his part.
Here's a direct partial cut and paste from an email exchanged between Levi and I:
" 2) No refund of the total paid in, or return of any card after it has been paid off will be accepted. The total paid can be applied to any cards, your choice, that we currently have available, or the total can be applied to a new payment deal agreed upon on a different card."
Thus, if for any reason, the layaway was not completed, I could use whatever I had paid in, as credit toward any of his inventory. Additionally, once I do pay it off, we have another provision in case I ever want to upgrade to a nicer copy where he will give me full credit for the one I purchased and allow a return against another 52 Mantle.
We actually have some nice agreeable to both of us terms worked up, I don't believe Levi is a "weasel" in this deal and I don't begrudge him for making a profit on this card, not even if he happened to find it in a dumpster originally and got it for a little digging and washing his hands.
<<< No refund of the total paid in, or return of any card after it has been paid off will be accepted >>>
Shrewd, right Steve D? And that "return policy" may be illegal for that dollar amount - I'm not sure, but in most if not all states, depending on the dollar amount, a buyer has 3 days to cancel a transaction IE: return the merchandise for a refund, but perhaps a layaway plan voids that - I'm not sure.
But I agree that Levi's not being a "weasel" here. A seller has to be "tough" on a layaway plan otherwise buyers might backout of deals more frequently...and that's good of Levi in case a buyer can't make all the payments to at least be able to apply the money towards other cards.
See Steve D...I'll give credit where credit is due when a baseball card dealer does something good.
I've always found Levi and Jim to be very honest in their dealings, and completely and totally professional. His prices are fairly firm, but they don't quibble when you offer a card to him at a price- they either take it or don't. I think the deal as it was laid out was more than fair- if you can't complete it you still have credit with him, and if you want an upgrade he'll give you the full price you paid for this one. I wish every dealer could be as easy to work with. No wonder they have been so successful for so long.

Great card. You are in good hands with Levi. I never understood the animosity people have towards him. If his prices are high, then don't buy from him. He is a great resource for those cards when you are down to one or two to complete your set. I sold a '33 Goudey PSA set to them and the transaction went smooth. I listed it on eBay with a high BIN. It didn't sell. Jim contacted me and asked me what was a number that I would be happy with. I told him and they sent me a check the next day.

The "weasel" as far as baseball card dealers go, has to do with how they make their money, not the activity of making money. For example, blatantly overgrading raw cards, lying about memorabilia especially autographs, cheating kids out of their allowance money, and a whole host of other weasel type behaviors. Don't act silly Steve D and spin what the word "weasel" means for baseball card dealers because most baseball card dealers are weasels.
However, I've never stated to avoid all baseball card dealers...but just to be very careful with them and after shaking their hand, make sure you've still got your watch. -
I would think that their are more weasel type collectors then weasel type dealers.
Sadly this hobby is full of weasels.
