OT Has anyone here went with BluRay or HDDVD?

Just wondering made the switch to Blu Ray right before Christmas. Have to say it really does look great. Wish there were more movies out right now but will probably change over time. I remember when I bought my first DVD player and there was only 20-30 movies out at the time. Interesting to see how fast things change.

<< <i>Looked at the combo players but figured HDDVD was going to die out so it really wouldn't have been worth the extra money. >>
I'm treating myself when my tax refund arrives by getting a new 55" tv and Sony's higher end BluRay player...can't wait! There are already hundreds of titles on BluRay, and Ive already picked up a few in anticipation.

1. A HDCP compliant video card. I have a eVGA 8800GTX.
2. A HDCP compliant software player (I used PowerDVD ultra)
3. A HDCP compliant LCD (not all are). I have a HP 2408.
I must have looked for at least 10 minutes without turning away , Oh yea . . . I was dragged away
My wife and I spent our Christmas on a new Samsung 40" Top of the line New technology called Automotion 1780p , a PS3 for playing Blu-Rays, and a new Reciever for our Surround Sound. I have been blown away by the combination of the new TV and the picture and sound, in fact the Blu-Ray movies on this new combo are better than any movie I've ever seen at a Theatre !!!

I am going to wait until there are more universal players on the market and the price per movie goes down to a more reasonable level. I like owning movies, but for 25-35 bucks MSRP I will pass with many of the same movies available on-demand in HD for 4-5 bucks a viewing. I have found that when I purchase a movie, I probably watch it the initial time and then may not pull it out again for another year,so I am paying an awful a lot of money just to have the movie conveininetly located in my house.

<< <i>I am currently in the market for a new TV, this may be the thread to ask the question....without breaking my bank account can anyone recommend a new television to purchase??? I noticed everything from 19 inch up to house size screens....looking for something in the 40-50 inch screen range....in the past I have been partial to Sony's or Magnavox, are they good brands for the new TV's??? thanks al. >>
Sony's are still some of the best out there, but you always pay a premium versus other manufacturer's with similar product specifications. I have a Sony TV, but if you are looking to save some cash, you can probably do just almost as good with another manufacturer (Panasonic, Samsung, Philips, Tosihba).
Magnavox has been positioned as a value product by Philips who owns the company. You will get a decent picture quality (as most HD sets will give you), but don't expect all of the bells and whistles.

Well, if you're willing to up your size just a touch, I'd recommend the Sony Bravia SXRD 55". It's a rear projection, but CNET rates it better than any LCD or Plasma in 2007. It was their editors choice in November. Here's the review.
I watch a lot of sports, and didn't want to worry about a blurry picture from an LCD tv not being able to keep up. Also, LCDs still don't produce a dark enough black for my liking. If something is supposed to be black, I don't want to see charcoal grey.
I also play some video games, and while they say burn-in is not an issue any more, I'm not willing to take the chance on a plasma.
I've looked at this Sony model a few times in stores locally and for it's size, it's got the best picture far and away. It's a $2000 set, and you'll have a bulb to replace down the road, but it's the best value for a 1080p of it's size in my opinion.

My first Blu-Ray player was my PS3.
I have about 10 Blu-ray movies. My rules for buying blu-ray movies are: I can't already own the movie on DVD and it can't cost more than $20. Amazon has buy 1 get 1 free sales all the time.
I've got a 56" Samsung DLP that I bought a little over a year ago. I plan to buy a 32-37" LCD for my bedroom in a few months.
If you're not in a rush, hold off until some more major studios sign up for one or the other.
Personally, I think BR will eventually win out..
edited to add: I've always had a chip on my shoulder about Sony products, I don't know why. I tend to purchase Samsung displays, they've been an industry leader for quite awhile in that arena. LG has some beautiful displays out as well.
Actually Warner Brothers announced a couple of weeks ago they were choosing to convert their Library (10,000's of thousands of Movies) to Blu-Ray over HDDVD. This is a giant blow to HDDVD and a tremendous boost to Blu-Ray. Warner Broths. has one of the largest invetory's of different and Vintage movies in the business. Insiders in the business predict over the next few months most large holders of Movie Inventory will choose one over the other (For the most part it is double the cost to the Studios to convert to both, although filming/processing now is easily done in both at the same time with new movies). Most predict and the money is going, with Blu-Ray as the winner.

And porn may have driven VHS over Beta, but it's different this time. Who buys porn discs anymore? It's all on the internet, so porn is really a non-issue in the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD debate.
ive had my current TV for 11 years, no problems works fine, and i dont need to see the pores on Bellicheks face....at least not yet.
got a DVD player 7 years ago for a very reasonable price, works fine, quality is great.
I remember paying $300+ for a VCR! i still have two of them, bought the last one for $33 i think lol.
Ultimately i think bluray will win out and they will just become one entity, the whole thing is just a marketing ploy to so you can buy the same movies you already own for $10 more per disk.
no thanks, ill pass for the moment.
Another asked about TV's and I can second the vote for the Sony Bravia SXRD, I got the 50" and love it and only paid a little over a grand, hell of a deal.
<< <i>PS3 here and love it, got it for the movies and the games are a bonus. Movies in Blu Ray are amazing!

a little over a grand for the sxrd is outstanding. I am looking at buying a bravia kdl-40v3000 and i think i will be lucky to get it at around $1300.

- I have a plasma and the new 9th gen will almost NEVER burn in. I play video games too. So I wouldnt worry about that Gumby.
- I thought all LCD monitord were HDCP compliant? ow do I know if mine is?
- HDDVD is definitely going to die, I wouldnt recommend the combo player
- And I recommend the Panasonic TH-42PX60U, it's the one I have and it's rated pretty well. It wont break the bank either. I only paid a grand for mine.
- I like twinkies

I would not recommend putting twinkies in your BluRay, HDDVD or DVD player. Your VCR? Go right ahead.
After all the talk on here, I took a drive to Circuit City today to talk about the Sony BluRay players they have for sale. They have two models that are very similar, but one is $399, the other $699. He said that there was really not much difference, and that if I'm looking for BluRay, to just get a PS3. Apparently both Sony players run on the v1.1 platform. When they upgrade to 2.0, you cannot upgrade the stand alone players. You CAN upgrade the PS3 through a simple download. So, now I have my PS3 (80gb model) sitting at home.
Just a little more info...
