Answers about the job and interview...NEW UPDATE...

Hey guys. I've received a lot of questions about the job I'm interviewing for and other stuff. I've tried to keep it on the DL because I know that this is not really the place to discuss some items. Two of which are politics and religion. At least I try to stay away as much as possible. I decided not to say anything about what the job was because I know that some people do no hold to the same religious beliefs that I do, but I've been encouraged to share by several people...so here it is.

3 1/2 years ago I was an associate pastor at a church in Cleveland, OH. The church went a very strange direction and I pulled up stakes because a lot of bad stuff was happening. Not cultish or anything or anything of the sexual nature just a difference in belief. But to say the least I caught a lot of flack from people and got really burned out. Ever since I was 12 I wanted to be a minister. I went to college for this and some grad school. So to say I was pretty bummed is an understatement. I ran and ran from going back into this type of "business" until recently. My wife and I moved to a small town and the church we attended needed someone to help with their youth group. So, my wife and I took it upon ourselves to help out.

Right after Thanksgiving my pastor told me a ministry job had opened up in a larger town close to us. So, I applied. That's where I'm at with things. I'm just waiting to hear back. That's why there were interviews on Wednesday and Sunday Mornings. Also, Wednesday nights. I am human and I do make mistakes and I've allowed those thoughts to keep me from going back until now. Honestly, I'm very nervous about everything. This job would certainly be a prayer and a dream come true.

So, there you have it.

    Guru, best of luck.

It is really a great feeling to have a job that you feel is your calling.

    Guru,

What you are doing seems noble and honorable. Good for you and I wish you the best.

However, these posts of yours seem more like a soap opera than anything that has to do with cards and memorabilia.

Best of luck on your job and future, that's more important than sportcards, but everyone of your posts seem way off topic.

    Sorry
  • No prob Big Red. Thank you for the kind words. I started posting about the job interview back in Dec. and thought I would continue since some on here wanted to know and the thread eliminators never took them off. I'll try and stay more on topic then OT in the coming days. I was encouraged by several here to make this post though. Thanks.
  • Guru, once again I hope things work out for you. I'm sure you can understand my appreciation for the Ministry. image

Now that's not fair, BigRed...Guru made a post about cards back in September 2006.

In all seriousness, though, best of luck with the potential job!
  • Wow, I'm pretty sure that was my first post. Thanks, I forgot all about that.
  • Good luck with the ministry. I have a family member who is an established minister and he recently went through a situation which is causing him to leave his church. Let's just say the ministry can be a fickle profession and those that you think are "friends" may ultimately turn on you. Ultimately at the end of the day it is your real family and not your church family that will support you when you are down and be there when you are sick. Whenever I hear a minister talk about the importance of the church family, I just roll my eyes.

  • My Dad was a minister for awhile from around 92-99. Admire people that choose that line of work. Very tough road to take and I wish you the best.

Any "vet" who does not have a place for a "preacher" is lost. I may not agree with your politcal stuff, but God made butterflies and alligators for different reasons- which would be a great discussion by the way, send me the tape. Mike

  • To follow your calling, especially one as fickle as the ministry, is a noble thing. In my neck of the woods, churches and pastors can have differences in belief overnight after years of dedication. It's a fine line you walk, preaching what people don't want to hear but trying to keep them happy enough to want you as their minister.

    Good luck, Guru!!

Very good point, and ultimately the minister's salary (and usually housing) is paid for by the congregation. If the congregation turns, the next contract renewal is usually unpleasant.

    Good Luck.

Your signature looks like you are quoting Phil. 4:13 as saying "GO TRIBE!!!!".
Just kidding, who knows maybe Phil 4:13 means the tribe will have the strength to make a playoff run this year.

  • Well, tonight was the final interview. It was very interesting. I thought it went well, but I was surprised by something. I kinda felt they thought I was too spiritual. Which is interesting coming from a church. I understand why they think that, but it was just interesting. I was, however, introduced to a very well known theologian who asked me a lot of questions. It definitely was good dialogue.
    Now comes the wait...

I had fewer interviews and screenings when I was applying with the CIA. Oops did I just say that, now I have to kill you all.

Is Jim Bakker running this church? If your spirituality does not mesh with the church's you should probably find another match.
  • Well, I didn't say that it didn't mesh. There were just a couple of people there who are afraid I may offend someone. I come from a ver conservative spiritual background, but that does not necessarily mean I still am. So, I felt that was this sense of hesitation because of my upbringing from a couple of people. That's all.
