1990 Donruss Baseball Blue/White Test Issue

Does anyone know much about this set? Like qty available of each player... and players available? This is the weird test issue that features a blue border instead of the normal red border, and the back of the card features another player on non glossy stock with a white border.

Btw, I found some in a dumpster. There were a few Babe Ruth rookie cards too, but I don't collect Babe Ruth so I left them there.

I think like with the 1990 Aqueous test cards they were sold by a former Donruss employee to a dealer. Not really sure though, I bought my Ripken on eBay a few years ago and am trying to get some sense of it's value now.

I've seen a few other commons on eBay from time to time (there's one auction on the bay right now) but haven't seen much in way of stars in a long time. I've also seen a Dave Justice in both versions, where he is on the blue side, and then where he's on the white side. I forget the other player with him, but I'm pretty sure it was a common.

They are the 1990 Donruss Best series. They were sold as 2 separate sets, one each for AL and NL. There's an AL set up for $5 right now. Don't seem too rare.

They aren't the Baseball best series, they have a lighter blue and have stats on the backs... if you look at the scans I posted the the Ripken is the actual back of the card, no stats.

The pictures used are also from the regular Donruss set and the the Best series.

For comparison, here's the Ripken from the AL Best Set... front

I can't use my scanner at the moment as the room I'm in is having renovations being done so I had to shove myself in a corner and disconnect a few things.

These are taken with my camera.

Info is from the 2005 (last one I bought) Standard Catalog Of Baseball Cards. Don't know if anything else has been added to it.

Hey thanks Barf, are there anymore players listed than what the scan shows?

That's all my book shows but it is a few years old so could be more by now.

Chandy Greenholt recently had a small sheet of these up for auction. Assume that there are very, very few available of each player (not sure whether the Donruss Aqueous are scarcer).

I'd really like to know if there is a reverse to the Ripken I have (where he is the blue front) and also what the value would be. I guess there is no way to be certain of the value unless I put it on eBay or something.

Here's my Blue/White. Sent off to SGC and they're unsure if they'll get a grade or AUTH. until in hand.

Only 'combo pair' I have is the c-list/Leach.

Never seen a complete c-list for these.

I went through the blue/white cards I own today (I'm up to 103 different) and put together the following shinola (1989FleerBillRipkenCollector has already been subjected to all of this minutia through PMs):

    - 90% of Blue/White cards are available as flipped pairs (i.e., if the blue/white pair is 544 Armstrong/672 Schiraldi, there will be a blue/white pair of 672 Schiraldi/544 Armstrong).

    - For almost all of the flipped-pair cards, if you add up the card number for the blue player and the card number of the white player, you will get a number between 1210 and 1222. For example, 544 Armstrong + 672 Schiraldi = 1216. This range is true for 116 out of 142 cards that I've verified.

    - I've run into two cards (so far) with the same player on the blue side as on the white side (608 Wilkerson and 609 Felder).

    - So far there are no Blue/White cards that match an Aqueous card. That wouldn't be so odd if all of the Blue/White numbers were higher than 283, but they aren't. I've run into four Diamond King cards in the blue/white set (7 DeShaies DK, 21 Herr DK, 26 Whitson DK, and 27 DK Checklist). All four of these cards have eluded me in the Aqueous set and now I know why. I also have three Rated Rookie cards in the blue/white set (44 Combs RR, 46 Mann RR, and 47 Machado RR). None of those three has been discovered in the Aqueous set either.

    - All of the cards that are in the Blue/White set are either Diamond Kings (last few in the checklist), Rated Rookies (last few in the checklist), an MVP card (last few--I have BC-22 Sax, BC-25 Hayes), or have a card number higher than 520 (521 is Hal Jeffcoat) with the following two exceptions: card #500 (a checklist) is in the blue/white set and so is card #321 Greg Swindell. I have a Greg Swindell/Don August card and a Don August/Greg Swindell card. Makes me think that Greg Swindell's card number used to be greater than 520 and renumbered sometime after the blue/white cards were printed.

    - The cards whose totals don't add up to a number between 1210 and 1222 always include an MVP card (BC-xx), a Diamond King card, a Rated Rookie card, Greg Swindell, or a card number higher than 702 (709 McWilliams/631 Frohwirth for example).

    - A few players have more than one flip variation: 591 Pagnozzi has 712 Boggs AS and 625 Valenzuela, 630 Velarde has 702 Johnson and 584 Mazzilli, 631 Frohwirth has 585 Pico and 709 McWilliams. All of these multiple variations has one card with the total of the card numbers in the 1210-1222 range and one in the 1300s.

Star (and semi-star) players that are in the blue/white set (some unconfirmed but all possible):

    551 Dave Winfield
    577 Mark Grace
    578 Larry Walker
    588 Carl Yastrzemski Puzzle Card
    639 Jack Morris
    643 Mike Schmidt

    697 Mark McGwire AS
    705 Tony Gwynn AS
    707 Will Clark AS
    710 Ozzie Smith AS
    712 Wade Boggs AS

Here's the list of cards that I either own or am guessing exist because there should be a flipped-pair for it:

Just learned- SGC does not assign grades to the Blue/White Test cards. They will assign them the AUTH label, like they do the Aqueous.

Hmm that's too bad, I wonder if BGS will grade them? They seem to have been grading the Aqueous the longest...
  • Options
I tried to email them 3x about 2 weeks ago and every email was kicked back. SGC told me 'Send them in and we'll see" So I rolled the dice with them. I'll contact BGS from home and post the results.

Can you post a scan of the Blue/White test in the SGC holder? I bet they still look nice, even without a grade

I should have them in hand tomorrow. I'll post pics....Since I never have used my scanner due to some missing file or similar error. It's only been about 5 years, lol.

Thanks for posting those pics! They look great in those holders, it's a shame they won't grade them
  • Options
    No problem.

Wow. One of my pics if really bad.

I agree they look nice. Glad the Blue is on the front.

Yeah, I dont know why SGC used to grade Aqueous then quit and cannot grade Blue/White. They can tell if their real but cannot determine the condition? "Yeah, it's real but this test card is not compatable with my J-Ruler". ? I dont get it. We need that Southerncards guy here. image

Maybe if PSA gets more info on these, they will assign grades as they do the Aqueous.

Although there are no known (at least by me) fake Blue/White and these would be alot harder to forge vs. a Aqueous. IMO

Here is my "flipped pair" for my Oil Can Boyd collection. I picked up the White Boyd a couple of years ago and just in the last couple of weeks found the Blue Boyd. FWIW, just to confirm your findings, Oil Can is not in the Aqueous.
