Another counterfeit 1906 S US-PI Peso on ebay

Even with the poor quality image he provides, the curved serif of a counterfeit is detectable. ALL authentic 1906-S pesos have straight serifs on the 1. In addition, the seller falsely describes "the best counterfeits" as being underweight, when the fact is the best counterfeits are manufactured from authentic 1903-S to 1905-S pesos, hence the curved serifs, and as a result, the weight will always be correct.

He cannot claim ignorance now that I have informed him of these facts.

Here is the link.

Another point of fact is that the absolute best counterfeits are made from the relatively uncommon straight serif variety of the 1905-S peso, but as that coin is significantly more valuable than the curved serif variety, only the boldest counterfeiters are willing to ruin its legitimate value in order to manufacture an illegitimate coin.

  • Whoever buys that is going to be very upset when they find out.
  • What I don't understand is that surely anyone willing to pay $1000+ for a 1906 1 peso must be able to spot a fake a mile awayimage

I am no expert on this by any means, in fact, I barely am an amatuer. However has there even been a GENUINE raw 1906-S Philippine Peso on Ebay? Bob

Not many! The few genuine examples I've seen all had problems (cleaned, corroded, chop marked, etc).

Here's a very rough price guide for an original 1906-S based on recent auctions and private transactions:

    VF: $2,500
    EF: $3,500
    AU-50 $7,000
    AU-58 $12,000
    MS-61 $30,000
    MS-62 $60,000 (currently for sale)

Nothing higher exists that I know about.
