Any grading experts out there???

Trying to decide whether or not to join the collector's club and send some stuff in to grade. Here are a couple of my favorites that need to be slabbed, tell me what you think they would grade. Thanks a bunch!

Aaron trimmed (sorry, bottom right hand corner)

    Kaline PSA 5.5

  • I agree with Barry on the Kaline, but I think the Aaron is just cut that way. I say a 5.5 on the Aaron as well. If it weren't for the print lines on both cards, you might be looking a 6's. Either way, GREAT cards!!! Good luck!
  • Nice cards, you should def get them graded if you intend to sell. Unfortunately, the creases in the sides of each card will drop the grades quite a bit. From the scans it does not appear that these are tears, however if they are your grades will go even lower, in the 2 or 2.5 range. If they are just creases, i would guess 4.5 or 5s. Either way, nice cards & you should get 'em graded.

Print lines - '54s are notorious for them - especially the Aaron
  • even if they grade "auth", you'll cover your grading fees. one has to wonder why these cards are not slabbed so make sure you accept a MG of "auth" when you do the paperwork.

Nice old cards. Yeah those line suck. I'm thinking the Aaron is nicer then the Kaline.

I love that rough cut. (on the Aaron)

Im thinking the Aaron is a 4?

    The Kaline a 2 or a 3?

    Ditto on all points.

  • Aaron looks to be trimmed to me, but if not PSA 4.5.

Kaline will probably nab you a 3.5.

Aaron 6, although the lower right edge does look to be cut inward, might be trimmed. That's too bad if it is, it's a really nicely centered rc.

    Kaline 5 to 5.5 .

This is of course assuming there's no creases or hidden wrinkles.

I've seen '54 PSA 9's with print line roller marks.

I would send them in and see what they slab out to be.
    Good luck!!
  • Why do they both have that same line? They came in the same pack or something? Same messed up batch? I don't know anything about these, so thats why i'm asking image

Nice looking cards anyway, I would say both 5's if I had to guess???

  • I say they both could be 5s. Here are two PSA 6s I had graded, both with the print lines.

I've seen that lower-right slant on graded Aarons before, so I'm thinking that it's probably a known flaw with the 1954 Topps print run.

However, the print line looks like the game breaker on both cards. It looks like they dig into the cards a bit, like scratches. You probably won't see anything higher than a 5 on both due to that.

However, centering's not bad, and the corners look 6ish. So, as long as there's no creases, I'll say PSA 5 on both.

  • No, there are no creases at all, I have been over them both rigorously with my loupe. The print lines are flush with the surface, no digs or anything, just the extra ink. The slant on the lower right on the Aaron is pretty common with the issue, here is one with the slant graded by PSA:

If that's the case, which I hope it is, 5.5 on both and worth the submission.

    Good luck image

I collect the '54 set in PSA 7 and 8 and I know these cards pretty well. The print lines do occur on some cards and won't detract much from the grade, if any. I feel the print lines do detract from their appearance though and whatever grade you get, the price will be in the lower range for that grade.

That said, as long as you don't see a wrinkle or the Aaron doesn't come back trimmed...

Aaron - PSA 7 with an equal chance of a PSA 6. Not knowing how they grade PSA 6.5, then if centering is something they use as a big guide, then a 6.5 is not out of the question
    Kaline - PSA 6

You might think I am being optimistic here, but I have seen many hundreds if not a thousand of the '54 cards in different grades.

Good luck and enjoy them both!

Did not see that this is common among the Aarons.

The one on the top is graded. Your card is on the bottom. Which card looks better?

I actually think my card presents itself better (centering, corners, color, etc.), what do you all think?
  • I think it's close.

  • If either of those cards get above a 4.5 then out of the thousands of cards i have sent in to PSA i am getting screwed royally.
They are nice cards but to many problems = 4.5 at best.

I totally down graded the kaline because the print lines were right at his face. Distracted to much for me. However if PSA allows for it then I would think it too would get a 4.

I aslo noticed the right edge of the Aaron and also thought it could be trimmed. I just did not want to be the first to mention it.

Both are nice cards I just do not like where the print lines are on the Kaline. Too focal of a point.

    good luck

    Good for you.
  • Gotta go with a slice job on the Aaron

    Ditto.

BUT, when I look at the 7,........... I dunno.

In any event, they should definitely be submitted.

  • I wish you guys could see these cards. The surfaces are like they just came from a pack. I will tell the story on how I obtained these. My father, who is a retired police officer and constable, is also a gun dealer. He and another man have a pawn shop. One day, my dad calls me up and says there is a man in here with a box of old baseball cards and wants to sell them. I went down there and met a man, about 6'2", shoulder length mullet, 3 teeth, holding a very old model airplane box. He said he had just inherited his uncles estate and was selling off everything, and found this box of cards in there. I opened the box and there were probably 7 or 8 stacks of cards in there, 50 or so to a stack, all with dry-rotted rubber bands stuck (and I mean stuck) around them. They were 1954 Topps baseball, 1954 Bowman baseball, 1954 Bowman Football, and some Non-Sports Topps Cards of Davy Crockett and World on Wheels. I took out a stack and peeled the rubber band fragments from around them. The outer 2 cards were ruined with stains from the rubber bands, but the inner cards were nice, almost like pack fresh! I found the Aaron and Kaline in the same stack in the middle (thank God). There was a complete run of the 54 Topps SPs in there, as well as many other stars. The 54 Bowman baseball yielded many stars including a nice Willie Mays. I realized then that these cards had been in this box since they were bought. I bought the cards from the man. I have since sold all of the cards, many to board members (cwazzy got alot of 54 Bowmans, he can tell ya about em), and have only kept these 2. So there ya go, I would stake my life that this Aaron card has not been trimmed.

Agreed...I paid to have MY sgc reviewed hoping for a 6, but they wouldnt give it the bump...i still think this is the nicest 5.5 i have ever seen. I do seem to have the same slant cut, but on top left though. I know ungraded, i would take this 5.5 over that psa 7 above (OMG)...

I stand by my first post:

    Aaron 6
    Kaline 5 to 5.5

That PSA 7 Aaron is pure ugly. That SGC Aaron looks like a solid 5.5 to me.
I've owned a straight 8 Aaron RC and it looked 3 grades higher
than that slabbed 7. For what it's worth my Aaron didn't have that slanted cut to the lower right edge corner.

I would trust the posters opinion who said he's collected this set and scene a lot of 54's. He knows the set cold.

Jeremy, I would just send in the cards and see how you do. By the way, great pawn shop story.
