I was asked to let ya'z know

So I'm letting ya'z know . . .

I have been thinking about auctioning /selling my 1932 Yankees team signed baseball , well I went to a show in Westchester last weekend and spoke with Mark Jordan and Phil Aman from Heritage .

They were great and let me know all about the way it would be best to go about it .

They said it could go in right away but suggested it go in the May catalog so they had more time to market the baseball, which I thought was cool and fine with me .

They said it would probably be on a page all by itself which also made me feel kinda good { I could tell they loved it }

So for anyone here that is interested in watching what happens with the baseball, This auction is currently scheduled to post to the web for bidding on 04-14-2008 through Heritage .

I have never auctioned anything so I am all excited .

Those two guys over there Mark jordan and Phil Aman were great and I hope we rock it like I know it will . . .

And wish me luck image

Oh yea and I think the last day for bidding is May 3rd

I wish you the best of luck, and I'm sure the ball will fetch a strong price for you! May lots of monies come your way and be put to great uses for taking care of your family. image
  • good luck with the ball. were you able to negotiate zero seller's commission on the item. or even a partial rebate of the buyer's commission?

Thanks for the well wishes ,

Well , I have no idea about that stuff and I pretty much let them know it , as if they wouldn't be able to tell anyway but . .

The deal is , they get 5 % of the hammer price .

They're going to do a lot of work on getting the word out there and I agree they definitely deserve to make their money for it .

To me the only issue I had at all was the fact you don't get a check until 45 days after the auction, they countered that with an offer of $10,000 on the spot with no charges on that money , so being able to put that cash to great use right away , It was a done deal .

    5 % is fair isn't it ?

I'll tell you something though without question . . .

I feel really strange with that baseball in someone elses possesion right now .

I see the pictures on my computer because it is my start up screen and it is a wierd feeling knowing it isn't here anymore .

I'm sure that's a tough one to let go of. Best of luck with the auction.

    Thank you ,

Right now . . . and even though it hasn't really started yet ,

It's kinda like watching the Superbowl , or the last game of the World Series ,

Aww man , I can't even begin to tell you the feeling you get when for instance my son and I took the baseball to one of his den meetings and all the fathers and sons , well the sons were already kids , but the fathers !

Back to our childhoods , the look on the faces and the amazement , that part right there is priceless , though indeed to let go .
  • in today's market and competition for auction items - you may have been able to get zero percent and even negotiate for a portion of the 15% buyer's premium Heritage charges.

normally 5% is very good but with an item like that you may have been able to do better.

not trying to ruin your deal or anything, just answering your question.

It's all good , Naaa, I know you're not trying to ruin anything , it's all good .

I'm really not the haggling type as long as the deal seems fair to me ,

Naturally every penny counts indeed and I wish I had that quality about myself . . . probably should have brought my sister in law to do that , she's amazing sometimes .

I dealt with Mark Jordan many, many moons ago...even back then the guy was absolutely #1 when it came to integrity and knows his stuff.

Good choice and best of luck with the sale.
  • They give it a two page spread and I think 5% is fair.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

Yea, those guys were both great , there was a lot going on around them and they absolutely took the time to make sure I understood everything .

I did ask them what they thought it might go for and they told me flat out , they really don't know because they really have nothing to compare it to and I agree , I have not seen one like it , I have seen a few on different baseballs with similar or slightly lesser signature quality , but not that signature quality on an official baseball .

I saw one , that was in Smithsonian Baseball ,

That baseball had 22 signatures though , but they said after a second name after Ruth , it really doesen't matter all that much , they said the huge Gehrig is a huge plus .

We talked about if it would be better to grade it first and they agree it is definitely going to get a low grade and they would have it graded and see what happens after that .

  • I don't think I'd be selling it in a Heritage Auction. I just read in another forum where some guy is still waiting on an auction lot to be shipped from Heritage that was paid for a couple of months ago. If it takes them that long to deliver the merchandise, how long will it take for them to mail a consignor check?

That stinks for that person if it is true ,
I don't anticipate any problems with them though , especially when I didn't even ask for any money up front , they offered it plus they are not charging a fee on that which they said they usually do .

I like Heritage , I always look forward to their catalog comming out , it is always well done with a lot of thought put into the work, both of these gentlement knew more about the baseball than anyone else I have ever talked to and I feel they were the most honest and did not try to fill my head with visions of something that is highly unlikely { I won't mention any names of the Co's that did , but there were a lot .

Some went even as far to say my baseball wasn't even real, it was a facsimili baseball which I just laughed so hard I damn near crapped myself .

Pretty much the ball is in such great shape , I'm sure many just can't believe what they're looking at . . .

Time to hobble into the office . . . . thank you all for the advice and the well wishes , I appreciate them all
  • Did they also mention my 5% cut? image

you're using an auction house i take it?

i am strongly considering selling my '71 baseball set & am thinking of using an auction house also.

what % do they usually take from the total sales value? i assume they need physical possession of the set before they can auction it? what about the description, do you have any say in that?

    thanks!
