I am a modern collector that would like to collect a couple of vintage cards, I need some advice ple

Hi,
I would like to purchase a 1964 Mickey Mantle psa 9 card. I have liked that card for 20 plus years; however, I am a huge football collector. I kind of want to get into collecting various baseball cards such as Mickey Mantle, Pete Rose and maybe some vintage Reds stars. I have been researching the price of a 1964 Mantle psa 9, but what I need is advice from you guys here on the board as to what a fair price would be this card. I really don't have experience with vintage baseball cards and want to be treated fairly when I do purchase this card. So, any help would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you very much,
Tim

I imagine that there will be 8.5's on the market within 30 days for around a grand... may be worth a look.

Why do you want a 9. The price (especially on key 50's-60's HOF'ers) skyrockets at the 9 level, and most at the 8 level too. Centered PSA 7's are very nice cards. Heck, they are nearmint, right. I suggest going for nice PSA 7 cards. Your collecting dollar will go much further.
  • Good advice from all. Great move going towards Mantles, reds not bad either. Best of luck.
  • Thanks guys for all the advice. Bobs--I saw a psa 9 on ebay the other day and simply put it was just beautiful. I only collect high grade cards, but I might take your advice on this one. I don't know if I can shell out $3500 on this one card.
    Thanks

For that kind of money you can get mid grade but excellent eye appeal cards of Ruth ('33 Goudey) Gehrig ('34 Goudey) or a Cobb (T206). They have a lot more upside and are a lot scarcer. Plus you have a much better chance of them not being doctored in that condition.
