1999 P SBA in MS68 Sold on Ebay for $5700

WOW $5700 for the 1999-P MS68 Pop 1 SBA. I know, it's a modern, the sky is falling and the tulip market all over again. I guess it just another case of modern collectors going crazy. I was offered $5000 for my 1981-P in MS67 and turned it down so I guess I am just as crazy.

Dennis: Who are these 2 high bidders? Know of them, or who they were bidding for? Regards. Wondercoin

  • I don't know who they are. I put in a bid of $5400 in the last 20 seconds only to find out that there was a problem with my bid, it wasn't enough and wasn't even recorded since the bidding was already much higher. By the time I went back to bid again the auction had closed. I know Dr. Golan and Colorman but do not know the other two high bidders. SBAs are really getting hot. I turned down a $5000 offer for my 1981-P in MS67 just a few days ago and now the coin sell for $5700.

I have no idea who the winner is either. I believe the other bidder was Braddick, doesn't he have a web site under the handle peacochcoins.com.

I had decided not to go over 5K and at the last minute bid $5,400 but I can't say I'm sorry I didn't bid higher. Just as I said that I would rather find a 1981P in MS67 then pay more then 5K. I think more of these will be made, not many, but enough to keep the price at $2,000 to $5,000.

I have time to keep working on my set. If this was a 1981S in MS68 you would hear me singing a whole different tune. That coin would be worth $15,000 to me, but I'm still looking.

I don't think that's our Pat Braddick. His e-bay handle has webtv in it. I do see benloe and pete in the early pre-$300 bidding!

Brian- I dumped webtv a couple months ago (gotta love that high speed cable access!) for a new HP computer with all the bells and whistles. Now I've just got to learn how to use it...
The underbidder appears to have a handle like mine (peac0ckcoins) but it's a little different. (My second eBay handle is now 'braddick').

I'll stick with my GD04 "Worse Known" SBA Registry and leave the $5,000.00 ones to the big boys.

Sorry Braddick, not that I was accusing you of anything bad. I just noted your web site and was taking a guess.

I like to see this series taking off like it is. Kind of makes sense too. First the Ikes had a great run (and still are), the natural progression would be the SBA.

  • SBA's taking off..I think not. There arn't any coins. The top 4 sets hold the low pops, except for this new pop 1 ELITE MS 68. Prices paid are simply a reflection of rarity.

Looks like Wayne is the New King Of SBA's when it comes to a record price paid for a SBA. Good going Wayne.

  • Will Sacs be next in line for high prices or are they already there? They are commanding some rather large prices at present. Here are some confirmed transactions and known legitimate offers made on Sacs in the last few months. The last one listed is currently for sale by Tad of Supercoin

  • It is worth mentioning that the seller is to be commended for a remarkably hype-free auction listing, he even pointed out some flaws not visible in the photos, and there's nary an exclamation point to be found! So, my comments below are not a slam on this seller or the coin. It appears to be honestly auctioned in an open market, can't ask for more than that.

That said, obviously the buyer is paying a significant premium for the label on this coin. Buyers need to be aware of that, particularly for recently minted brilliant coins that are found in high-grade by the hundreds.

When considering a coin like this, it might be worthwhile to consider that you could buy 100 PCGS MS67s for the same price. Five full PCGS boxes of shiny well-struck problem-free coins. If you can't consistently pick out this MS68 from those 100, you are paying for the label, not the coin.

Buying a highest-grade PCGS coin does not necessarily mean any more than exactly that -- you are getting one that has attained the highest grade at PCGS -- not necessarily the world's finest coin. Again, not that there's anything wrong with that, just that I wouldn't recommend doing it with the rent money.

On the other hand, if $5000 is lunch money, go for it! Personally, on my budget, I'd rather pay a dealer (like myself, say) $250 to find a really nice MS67, and use the extra $5000 to take my shiny new MS67 on a Hawaiian vacation, flying first-class. image

SUPERCOIN; I have to agree with you. I own 5 MS68 SBA$'s and the difference between MS67 and MS68 is subtle at best. I believe there will be more of these coins graded and that is why I was not willing to pursue it any further then I did.

P.S. I just got back from getting married in Tahiti and I am going on my honeymoon in Fiji in a few days ( but I'm leaving my SBA$'s at home ).

  • Hey, congratulations! I'll hazard a guess that your traveling companion is better-looking than my suggestion. image

So you married guys out there -- want to place any bets? How long before 5 MS68's hit the market? image
  • Tad,

As a previously married guy, I would suggest the fire sale will occur as soon as she sees the blue boxes. Somehow, wives and coins don't seem to mix very well.

  • Sorry guys, I love coins as much as anyone but that price I would have to agree with supercoin, get the nice MS 67 for 250.00 and pocket the 5k for a real coin of higher quality or just keep it in the bank. That was not a superior MS 68, even by the sellers own admission of honesty pointing out the flaws....MS 67 MS 68 it only got the price because PCGS over graded it, send it in again I bet it comes back MS 67.....

Or, better yet, buy a MS67 for $50.00 (the full retail price on these and then some!) and cherry pick your own and take the extra TWO HUNDRED dollars and buy your wife two dozen roses and a nice dinner.
All of a sudden the "coin thing" will look better to her (for awhile that is...).

SUPERCOIN; Thanks, and your right. No comparison.

Keith; So far she tolerates the blue boxes very well.

Braddick; I have made and sold at least 15 1999P MS67's for about $30 each the 2000X price for one grade that is subtle or none existent wasn't worth it to me.

DRG: As your bidding on the coin reflected, it only makes sense to go around 1750x for the next grade; 2000x never makes any sense image Wondercoin

  • I think you need to drop a "0" off $30 X 1750 would be $52,500 175 x $30 = $5,250 which is near his bid on the coin.
  • Hey, knock it off about this $30 stuff -- a nice one is $55, my web site says so.

Mitch, you're not allowed to comment on "crazy" prices unless you tell people what you're asking for your MS69 "monster". Bawk-bawk-bgawk! image
