WOW $5700 for the 1999-P MS68 Pop 1 SBA. I know, it's a modern, the sky is falling and the tulip market all over again. I guess it just another case of modern collectors going crazy. I was offered $5000 for my 1981-P in MS67 and turned it down so I guess I am just as crazy.

I had decided not to go over 5K and at the last minute bid $5,400 but I can't say I'm sorry I didn't bid higher. Just as I said that I would rather find a 1981P in MS67 then pay more then 5K. I think more of these will be made, not many, but enough to keep the price at $2,000 to $5,000.
I have time to keep working on my set. If this was a 1981S in MS68 you would hear me singing a whole different tune. That coin would be worth $15,000 to me, but I'm still looking.
The underbidder appears to have a handle like mine (peac0ckcoins) but it's a little different. (My second eBay handle is now 'braddick').
I'll stick with my GD04 "Worse Known" SBA Registry and leave the $5,000.00 ones to the big boys.

Looks like Wayne is the New King Of SBA's when it comes to a record price paid for a SBA. Good going Wayne.

That said, obviously the buyer is paying a significant premium for the label on this coin. Buyers need to be aware of that, particularly for recently minted brilliant coins that are found in high-grade by the hundreds.
When considering a coin like this, it might be worthwhile to consider that you could buy 100 PCGS MS67s for the same price. Five full PCGS boxes of shiny well-struck problem-free coins. If you can't consistently pick out this MS68 from those 100, you are paying for the label, not the coin.
Buying a highest-grade PCGS coin does not necessarily mean any more than exactly that -- you are getting one that has attained the highest grade at PCGS -- not necessarily the world's finest coin. Again, not that there's anything wrong with that, just that I wouldn't recommend doing it with the rent money.
On the other hand, if $5000 is lunch money, go for it! Personally, on my budget, I'd rather pay a dealer (like myself, say) $250 to find a really nice MS67, and use the extra $5000 to take my shiny new MS67 on a Hawaiian vacation, flying first-class.
P.S. I just got back from getting married in Tahiti and I am going on my honeymoon in Fiji in a few days ( but I'm leaving my SBA$'s at home ).
I fly coach.
So you married guys out there -- want to place any bets? How long before 5 MS68's hit the market?
As a previously married guy, I would suggest the fire sale will occur as soon as she sees the blue boxes. Somehow, wives and coins don't seem to mix very well.

All of a sudden the "coin thing" will look better to her (for awhile that is...).

Keith; So far she tolerates the blue boxes very well.
Braddick; I have made and sold at least 15 1999P MS67's for about $30 each the 2000X price for one grade that is subtle or none existent wasn't worth it to me.
Mitch, you're not allowed to comment on "crazy" prices unless you tell people what you're asking for your MS69 "monster". Bawk-bawk-bgawk!
