Question about an Ultimate B-ball card collection

I am working on a card collection that includes samples of all the "main" (not parallel or subset) baseball card sets. For example, this includes Topps, Donruss, Fleer, etc. The problem is that I don't know what card sets to include as "main" sets prior to 1950. Would anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Matt

  • It depends. How far back do you want to go?

  • Number of cards included in the set should be used as a qualifier.. just pick a nice BIG number..

ok, so what do you consider mainstream?
    Topps?
    Goudey?
    T206?
    Allen & Ginter?

This is largely going to be opinion as it wasnt as easy as Topps, Fleer, etc back then. There were seceral sets going on the same years by different manufacturers.

My personal, unofficial "These were the 'mainstream' sets pre-1950" list: (or in today's market, "popular")

    1887 Allen & Ginter (N28)
    1908 American Caramel (E91) Set A
    1909 Philadelphia Caramel (E95)
    1909 T204 Ramly Cigarettes
    1909-11 T206 White Border
    1910 E98 Set of 30
    1910 T212 Obak
    1910-11 Sporting Life (M116) - Basic
    1911 T205 Gold Border
    1913 National Game
    1914 Cracker Jack
    1915 Cracker Jack
    1916 Sporting News (M101-4)
    1916 Sporting News (M101-5)
    1921 Exhibits
    1922 Exhibits
    1933 Delong
    1933 Goudey
    1934 Goudey
    1934-36 Batter-Up
    1935 Goudey
    1936 Goudey
    1938 Goudey
    1939 Play Ball - Basic
    1940 Play Ball
    1941 Double Play
    1941 Goudey - Basic
    1941 Play Ball
    1947-66 Exhibits
    1948 Bowman
    1948-49 Leaf - Basic
    1949 Bowman - Basic

Again, this is largely a matter of opinion. Some will say, "Hey, why did you skip _______set" or "Hey, why did you include _______ set in that list?!?!?"

A couple of years ago I suggested a "PSA SAMPLER" registry, and they added it...

  • I guess I should try to clarify...

I know there are a lot of vintage carad sets out there, but I am trying to narrow the additionals to my collection to just the "main" sets. The trouble is, I don't know what to consider the "main" sets or otherwise it will get big and expensive!. For the 1980's it was pretty clear, but prior to 1950 I am not certain. Many people seem to agree with Goudey, but after that opinioins seem to vary quite a bit. For example... should the Cracker Jack cards be there? The Old Judge?, the Exhibits? Allen & Ginter? T205? T206? Delong? Play Ball? Hassan Turkey red? Triple folders? Please keep the opinions coming!

    Thanks!

    Matt
  • Yes. My list (if you take the manufacturers, not necessarily the years) should be a comprehensive list
