The best cards that I have found as far as centering and 4 sharp corners is in rack packs, I haven't had very much luck in getting any cards that were worth sending to PSA from wax or cellos. I have sent in quite a few of the 81's and got back 9's and 10's I even got lucky and pulled the only Benny Ayala 101 in a 9.
I just started putting this set together about a year ago I bought about 250 PSA 's off of a guy on the board that goes by ShootyBabitt. I originallly was going to sell them off but decided to put the set together. I bought a rack case sealed and have opened two of the rack boxs and I have about 230 cards more cards I'm sending in when the next low special comes around.

The main set that I have is the 1975 Topps set I have 2 of them, both graded and complete. Most of my concentration goes to those 2 sets.
I've been working on that set for about 5 years now, and keep adding to it. Without a doubt a very expensive set to put together in 9's and 10's. The 1981 set is not near as expensive and the cards can be picked up very reasonable. So far I have about 100 that I have submitted to my set from PSA. I do have a some 9's and alot of 8's if your interesed in buying any.

    Good luck with your set.
  • Thanks for the info. Congrats on the Ayala, I have heard it's real tough and the few I've seen are horrible. May I ask when you say waiting for the next special to come around, what would the PSA submission price be? I know they run specials and from my recollection it's like $5.50 or something like that.

I'm likely rejoining as I want to submit some '81 Topps, I may have a few '86 Fleer basketball left to do, as well as a '92 Team Pinnacle set. The 1992 Team Pinnacle was 1 per 4 boxes and I always loved that set. It's so cheap now I figure just get me a really high end PSA one to stick aside. I have a few rack packs just put up from '81 Topps but may bust a few down. I wasn't sure if the racks or wax gave better grades. The racks seemed kind of loose to me in the packs but the wax could be worse as I don't have any real experience with those.

I just nee to round up 6 premium submission type cards. I have a few old Goudey and V300s I could submit but they aren't in the best shape so it's not that they are a driving need.

I'd like to see one for $4.50 a card but it might be a while. Its really hard to tell when they give out good specials.
  • Anyone making more progress? Im up to about 60% complete, although I have a lot to update in the registry after I accidentally deleted them all. Have a rather large submission headin in soon - after some rack boxes and now 3 wax boxes coming from the group rip. Hopefully a few Pop 1's....

  • I made a bit of progress recently. Now that my sub from the summer popped - I am 100% complete! Yippee!

I have two cards for trade / sale:

1981 Topps Rickey Henderson #261 PSA 8 NQ
1981 Topps Dave Edwards #386 PSA 8 NQ

I would love to trade for a card that upgrades one of mine! The Dave Edwards is super tough and so an 8 is pretty good.

    highlights from last sub:

    Bill Campbell #396 PSA 9
Angels Future Stars #214 PSA 8
    Dave Smith #534 PSA 8

    lowlights:

    Frank Pastore #499 PSA 6
    John Ellis #339 PSA 6

Let me know if you are interested in the Rickey or Dave Edwards.

    thanks,

    Les

Once again, burned on the 81s. These were from the vending and wax box purchased from BBCE a few months back. Although the 81s are a crapshoot for non-4sc subs, I enjoy the quest. Every now and then you get thrown a bone, unfortunately not on this sub.

  • Picked up 3 on ebay that were PSA 10's that were either 1 of 1 or 1 of 2. Going to be a slow grind on this set finding a lot of these in higher grade. A good long term project though. I've about decided to give up on busting down wax and racks as you can buy the 9's for grading cost and buy the 10's for reasonable prices as well. The 10's are so tough to pull from the unopened material I've found that unless you get really lucky it's hard to not just buy from 4SC and the like. Once I get closer I'll look at busting down more to find the ones I'm missing but it's hard to beat the pricing considering how condition sensitive this set is.

  • I have been going back and forth on whether to work on this set image - 1981 was the first year I collected in a big way (had a paper route). I'm basically done with the 70s and will either go back to the 60s or forward through the first 1/2 of the 80s. My wallet tells me the 80s are fine! In the meantime, I have been quietly stocking up on 1980-85 stuff to rip later.
75 Minis - GET IN MY BELLY!
  • Like MintMoonDog I've been vacillating about starting a collection of this set. I recently acquired a large number of vending
boxes very affordably and don't have a ton of money into 1981 yet, but it's tempting.

I've busted 18 of 36 boxes so far and have been sorting through them and evaluating the population reports
as well as the current higher-rated registry sets.

Pros and Cons anyone about collecting this set in PSA 9 or above? Would I be crazy to attempt it?

The hardest card in my opinion is the Glenn Adams card #18 so far only PSA 8's POP 7, no 9's or 10's and from what I have in the 18 card it doesn't look like there will be a 9 or 10.
There is a lot of excess print on the tops of all the ones I have. The best I have got from my submissions is a PSA 7. This card is the only card in the set that has no 9's or 10's
There are a few other cards with a POP of 1 , 2, and 3 that are hard to get so far. When I started collecting this set about 2 years ago there was 3 cards that had only PSA 8's now there is only one. Its been an interesting set to put together.
  • After 18 vending boxes (9,000 cards) some of my toughest cards are:

    Adams
    Lynn
    Valenzuela
    Klutts
    Youngblood
    Matlack
    Pastore
    Staub

Many others this was just off the top of my head.

I'm sure that I don't have any 9s of those.

Picked up some of the Grocery Racks - any idea what type of quality to expect relative to regular racks?

I have 3 different racks showing Nolan Ryan.....each time in a different window. Kind of neat having a Left a Center and a Right. (Also have Fernando rookie in a window). Was planning on ripping them all.....anyone think there is merit to not opening the Ryan's?

I am closing in on Smokie image but have long removed my set from the registry ..... until Im ready to take the crown.

  • The star cards are for the most part disappointing.
Centering is generally bad on most of those.

Off the top of my head:

    Henderson - several possible 9s
    Rose - no 9s
    Schmidt - maybe one 9
    Carlton - no 9s
    Bench - no 9s
    Jackson - one potential 9

    Potential 10s:

    Rice
    Perry
    Bench RB
    Rose RB

On the upside -- lots of potential 10s for commons and lesser stars.
Cherry-picking these as I bust the boxes is going slowly.

And quite a number of low-pop 9s; as I see this set in it's entirety I suspect that some are low-pop
just due to general lack of submissions and not mainly because of hesitation to sub due to
centering problems i.e. Adams, Pastore, Mazzilli, etc. Ed Whitson is a good example.

  • When I'm done busting these boxes I should have about 25 Sutters -- but judging by
what I've seen so far the best couple will be 9 at best.

bottom overlapping the picture/border. Disappointing to say the least.

Gotta give Topps points for consistency. Negative points in this case.

  • I was the one looking for a Sutter in PSA 9 awhile back. I was trying to wrap up HOF run for '81 Topps and it was the only one I was missing. Suddenly, 4SC posted maybe 5 of them with BIN of at least 25 bucks. I think 4 got snapped up right away. It begs the question... why doesn't 4SC post one with a regular auction and see what it goes for and THEN do a BIN for each remaining one until the last is sold, perhaps marking it down a few bucks after every unsold auction? If you have 4 bidders thinking they were worth at least that much, you probably could have got $50 for at least a couple of them... one being me. I know there are quite a few low pop HOF cards from the 80's you could do this to. '90 Sandberg, '86 Steve Carlton and '87 Kirby Puckett come to mind as well. Sold my Sandberg privately about 8 months ago for $150 and bought it back on a 4SC BIN for $35.

  • I've never been able to figure out 4SC's pricing. They seem to have a vague idea
of what they can get but they leave a lot of money on the table in some cases.

Often they piss me off because they drive the market lower when they don't have to do so.
Sometimes they have the only PSA 10 or PSA 9 of a card and they still price it low BIN.

I have a number of HOF PSA 10 cards for 1980s that I don't even have for sale because
4SC undercuts a good price way too much. Sometimes they appear to be just about giving PSA 10
    cards away IMHO.

My guess as to why they do this is since they sub cards on a grand scale they have
to get a faster return on their investment and as long as they're within a certain profit
margin they're content to get less than they can.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the PSA 10 collector he didn't exist.

    Touche.

There is no substitute for knowing the market and knowing particular cards well.

    Good job.

  • Was in a local card shop yesterday browsing when a guy came in --- and wanted to see 1981,1982 Topps baseball.

Good to see there is interest in raw cards for these years as it means that nice specimens graded are also
going to be in demand. He was looking for "upgrades" to his sets, but that's not easy as we know.

Here is a picture of all the cards I went through and to submit to PSA. I ended up with about 120 PSA 9's and 10's for the set. I need 4 more cards to be 100% complete and 40 to change out to either 9's or 10's

Jesse good luck with running me down.

    Smokie,
That's dedication. I was lucky enough to land 3 - 10's out of 20 on a recent submission. Nothing earth shattering, but a 10 from 81 is a nice win.

  • How much does light "snow" on a card affect the grade?

Let's say I have an otherwise PSA 10, what would the
    grade reduction be for this?
