This popped last night for a pretty penny on Ebay. Must say, though, it is one of the toughest 1981 Topps cards to find in top shape. [just as tough as Pete Rose]

You should talk to Gator and a few others, who have broken cases of product on this issue. I do not doubt or dispute you on the Population trends, but the cardboard and blade quality in 1981 was pretty crappy, noting that it impacts certain cards more than others. Pete Rose has only two PSA 10's out of over 600 submissions, Johnny Bench has only one PSA 10, Carlton has only two, etc.

I agree with you in that it will always trail many/most of the other 1981 Topps in the PSA 10 POPs, I am just hoping we will se a few more in the next few years for me to have a crack at one for my Carlton Set.

Great job again on your recent tough pick-up!

I opened two rack cases and got zero tens. Zero.

Don't let anybody tell you 81T is easy in top grade.

Besides the crappy stock/blades there are huge color variances - from dull/flat & crappy to 10-ish vibrant. The 10-ish vibrant are much harder to come across too.

I just started putting this set together. They were the first cards that I bought as a kid. I bought a wax box a couple of weeks ago and had a blast opening it. The PSA Set registry special came at a perfect time.

If anyone has any PSA 9 or 10 lots for sale, I would be interested. A few more cards and I should be able to crack the top 20.

marc-did u pick up the carlton??? Nice card, hard to find without the cluttered background....

81's are pretty much like this 50% of the set is a breeze, 25 semi tough, 15% tough and 10% doesnt exist lol....

Some stats on rose out of 30 or so rack cases. Ive NEVER turned a 9.....In fact ive NEVER turned a 9 on rose and only a handful of carltons...I have a few 10 canidates for carlton though....

I think to date 81 is the only set where a complete set in 9 doesnt exist from the modern era!!!!!!! Then take all the tilts and blah cards that are in holders then whats really left...Centered hiend cards are hard to come by when you get into the semi tough...

On what mike said on the vibrant 10sh color imo its the only way todo 81's or to atleast appreciate them....

babbit ill try to get you a list today...

Marc - Congrats on the Carlton! Excellent pick up.

The Rose has been a difficult one. Popped two 9's on my first submission of 81's. Haven't had another in the last 10 years. Still have never pulled a mint quality Ryan. Go figure. Buying unopened material to find upgrades for my set has become an exercise in futility.

While it's good to see 4 Sharp Corners getting into the 1981 Topps game (and other 80's sets), it seems some of us have been waiting around for 9's to show up for sale. How about Rick Burleson and two Fred Lynns going for $50+ each this week? Yowza. And I thought Dale Murphy was a little expensive!!

I felt pretty good about my bids for Lynn and Burleson in the $6 range. Perhaps I am just too cheap! image I hope four sharps leaks out a few more fred lynn's in the next few weeks. They slow rolled their Steve Howe's pretty well a few months back. Started in the $18 range and after they sold a few you can now find them for $3. <Sigh> Just gotta keep hoping for good cards at good prices....

So, everyone has their report from the National last weekend, but I thought I would give the perspective from a 1981 topps collector. I enjoyed the Set Registry luncheon with Joe Orlando, though finding someone to talk 81 topps was hard to do! the guest speaker, jeff gitomer, was very entertaining and it was neat to see the legendary don spence in person!

The show itself was overwhelming with the amount of product available, but finding 1981 Topps unopened or PSA 9 was a challenge. I found three unopened Cello packs at a dealer and spent 10 bucks on a lark that a GEM would be inside. Probably not - but maybe a gradeable Larry Parrish. I made it to Dave and Adam 's Cardworld after they sold their 1981 vending case - so no luck there. BBCE had three vending boxes; I checked them out and one box had the least staining and looked most pristine. I bought that one for 30 dollars. Still haven't opened it yet, but hoping for the best! Finally, I spent 60 dollars on six SGC GEM 10s (SGC 98) for 1981 topps - eric wilkins, alan bannister, roger erickson, matt keough, bob knepper and mike hargrove. I am hoping that they can be crossed over to PSA 10s or 9s. I am not too concerned if they are 9s - because I just can't find them anyway. I did hear a scary story about cross-overs though - Joe Orlando told me that sometimes the SGC "custom-cut insert" gouges the side of the card and turns SGC 9s into PSA 5s. Perhaps a biased story, but I have never heard anything reliable about cross-overs. I think my plan will be to send in 3 for cross-over and cut out the other three and send them in raw. We will see what happens. Best deal of the show was an "auction" for a shoe box of "Over 525 GEM MINT 1981 Topps Cards" - I bought it for $4. I think I have a gradeable Rick Honeycutt, Quisenberry and Gene Tenace - so pretty good value for $4!

Only other interesting thing was the number of 1981 OPC PSA 10s - I had never seen one in person before (A couple of Rickey Hendersons were seen). Not that I am interested in 1981 OPC, but still interesting to see.

Latest status - #6 on the 1981 Topps registry in PSA 9 or better; 56 cards at PSA for grading - need about 115 PSA 9s for completion, Marvis Foley - nowhere to be found.

Just wondering if anyone knows definitively as to whether or not '81 Topps vending boxes came sealed/shrink wrapped. I have picked up several and some were, some weren't. Just wondering if I bought boxes that were likely cherry picked or if the seller was trying to lead me to believe that they weren't searched; still "manufacturer sealed"

    Thanks

I concur - Topps didn't shrink wrap it, but the Baseball Card Exchange does....If it is one of theirs, there should be a tag on the bottom. Doesn't mean it looks good inside though! I have found that sometimes the shrink wrap is too tight and hurts the cards inside.

oh well, still can't find marvis foley in PSA 9.....up to 90% complete though!

I just opened 3 vending boxes and the variation in card quality among them was huge. 1 box had quite a few (60ish) that I might sub but one of the other ones literally had maybe 10 that would be worth subbing; so damn frustrating.

    Hello All,

Just got my latest submission results back and wanted to share some quick highlights. The 6 SGC 98s I bought at the National last summer came back 50/50. I cracked them out and submitted all of them raw and got 3 PSA 10s and 3 PSA 9s. Best part was I got a #74 Mike Hargrove PSA 10 - Pop 1! I also got #99 Eric Wilkins PSA 10 - Pop 2. Very exciting....Also found a raw #537 Ron Hodges on Ebay that came back as a PSA 10 - Pop 1...

So, I have a few "sweet" extras that I would love to trade for something to fill a hole in my set:

#18 Glenn Adams PSA 7 NQ
#99 Eric Wilkins PSA 9 NQ
#169 John Mayberry PSA 9 NQ
#632 Alan Bannister PSA 9 NQ

Check out my set and see if you can fill a hole: http://www.psacard.com/PSASETREGISTRY/alltimeset.aspx?s=6641

I am at 92% complete and would love some help from the team to complete! I am actively seeking a John Tudor PSA 9 and Marvis Foley PSA 9 (amongst others)

    Thanks,

    Les

    Les,
Nice set. I've yet to see a decent Adams. I'm not sure if a 9 will ever surface.

I pulled a Garvey 10 and a Burleson 9 (not sure what keeps this and the Guidry's at a 9 when i submit them image) this week from a stack I had sitting to the side. If you are interested in an upgrade on the Garvey let me know. I'm planning to list it on ebay later this evening.

    Mike,
Nice job on those 10s you received.

    Thanks,

    David (LD_Ferg)

    Hey Dave,

Thanks for the offer. I saw you already posted them on Ebay - so good luck there! I was very interested in the Sheet E cut card case you listed....Do you happen to know if it is FILLED with Marvis Foleys and John Tudors? How about Dave Edwards or Dave Ford? I don't have any reference material here at work (shocker) so I can't tell who might be hidden in the cut card case. Do you get it from Dave and Adam's Card World?

The Glenn Adams is certainly a tough card (though Joel Youngblood may be tougher) - I was able to pick up an 8 from Bernie Carlen...I had a line on a Pete Mackinin PSA 8 (super tough) in November on Ebay - but the seller disappeared. Like literally he might have died because everything with him just stopped...It was eerie....

Mac is really tough due to the snow... I agree adams can be done and do have a few that will make the grade W/o the print....Ayala im still not convinced I have a 9 but there in a pile finally and one is registered in my head.....

I finally have all my nmmt-mt sorted out in order so I can start to get a grip of what im sitting on its taken me several years due to my inventory being in multiple locals...I did however find another
real nice cardenal that cards been a beast for me think I only have only 4 clean copies.....

Man, i am green with envy at the sheer amount of knowledge that you guys have about 1981 topps baseball.

id love to hear how your "obsession" with 1981 topps baseball came about, as it seems that some of you have
been at it for many YEARS

Did you actually send the gum in to be graded? I thought that was photoshopped. image

    Les,
I'll check on some of the players on the Sheet E case and let you know who's in it.

    Thanks,

Haven't done this pic thing in a while but will try. When I was collecting this set these were 2 I could never find in 9 Mint. Of course just got them in a recent sub.

I've been collecting this set in graded form since Mar. 2002. Still haven't been able to land PSA 9's of the following...

    18 - Adams
    58 - Youngblood
    101 - Ayala
    107 - Wortham
    251 - Brookens
    466 - Molinaro
    518 - Jackson
    583 - Milbourne
    588 - Lavelle

Was just able to cross #703 Woods off this list. Bought one raw for $1 on E-Bay listed as MINT. Came back a PSA 10. It's like the one perfect shot in a golf round.....enough to keep you coming back.image

Currently collecting.....your guess is as good as mine.

Nice work on the Alvis Woods! I have not had luck buying raw commons yet; I've been trying to do that with some of the Tigers (this team seems to have several tough cards).
