Just thought Id pull it up instead of invading the mini thread.

Matt your correct adams is tough. I'll pull some examples of some toughies and post them.

Heres some scans of a few tougher ones.

    image

Some of the best tigers you'll ever see!

    image

Bonds is really tough to find clean and bold have a great 8.5

    image

Possibly the best copies of them 4 to exist. Creeperkat has a nice hassler he picked up from me couple years back.

    image

Those for good luck. The cardenal might be the only 10 to exist usually print ridden and ugly. Arroyo just flat out tough.

    image

All four the best ive pulled. Richard is real tough to find bold.

    image

Best ive pulled as well actually bought back the fisk last year sold it 5 yrs ago. Unkinown deal knew it was mine when i was flipping through the stack matched the certs and was correct glad its back in my hands. It was the backup to my 10 years ago and was stronger.

    image

Thats my klutts. Nice bench my set card is at psa now.

Thanks for the scans, that's a nice Rose. I have had the good fortune of finding a few very low pop commons, all of which I've sold. My biggest challenge opening both rack and vending has been the star cards ie Schmidt, Rose. Ryan not so tough. I've been killed on the stars. The pops seem pretty high on most stars so don't know why so tough for me - print problems and centered low. Anyway, think I'll go through a couple more unopened vending I have and see what I come up with.
  • Options

    Matt,

I feel ya on the stars. Though if you look at the pops and compare them to the surrounding years pops are much lower. Jackson is under 45 9's and stargell and parker are my worst enemies. Still have nothing knockout from them two. Ryans are always oc in racks along with schmidts. Vending seems to be the best for schmidt. Rose is wax and certainly not racks im in the 0 for forever on rose in racks and thats in the tune at least 20 rack cases lost count. With 81s its pretty much all about the centering, registry, then go to the corners doh touch another 40 cards oh centered, registry, doh touch.

Did I sell you that vending case few years back? I had one go your way and 2 went to aj's but the one that went out west I should have cracked just wondering. THought ive sold you some product in the past.

PS do them scans look a little fuzzy? My eyes are doin the pixel dance.

    gator,
nice bench and arroyo. what did the bench end up coming back? do you have an eye for what PSA is looking for on the 81s? i can't visually tell a difference from a 9 to a 10 in most cases. i don't see how 'justcollect' ends up with so many 10s.

i finally ended up with a few 10s in my latest sub (most are from the traded set):

What psa is looking for in 81? Haha wish I knew no from what I gather out of grading over 3000 of them is they want CRISP! Which of course can usually be found out of racks and sometimes wax if stored correctly. Vending you can pull 9's but ive rarely pulled many 10's. Pretty much sums up to supply and how much you have meaning. Try getting supply from 10 dif sources say a box from each either vending rack or cello sort them all then take a look at all the variations of each card, print, snow, registered, not registered then go to corners and centering. Actually centering and corners are the last to look at imo thats the easy part.

    OR

Forgettaboutit lol its really not worth the money at this point. IF you do find the good supply that doesnt mean he has more or your going to find enough to make a buck.

Good thing is the product is cheap in comparison to surrounding years. I just replenished my stash finding a great deal on wax to my door 68.00 per and bought 3 and actually think they hit my step as I type. This spring boxes will be going for 125.00 again. I bought them for the flip and might crack one. At this point I dont find many upgrades to rip product.

As for justcollect yes he's flooding it Im pretty sure I know where he landed the product as I was an underbidder and still kicking myself for it. At the time I had 4 rack boxes and 200 loosepacks so I really was burned out on 81's. The product was from the same supplier that I scored huge on 8 yrs ago or same run. Thats the only thing I can gather many people are on the lookout for me on the big score in 81's and its the only big one I think Ive missed over the last few years to my knowledge I passed on the 16boxes from cleansweeps auction awhile back though what he's pullin appears to be from racks. Of course this is all a educated guess. The the only way your even going to make a dent in 81 is buying huge bulk (betting big) and pull your hair out sifting through it and fwiw put the cards in order after every pack lol or you'll end up in my shoes not knowing what you have for down the road.

Then bench came back a 9. Took in a real smokin fydrich few weeks ago I sold it few years back and it somehow made its way back to the nest again. That cards a great example to find what psa's lookin for get your hands on 20 birds and look at all the different shades and variables.

    image

Sorry for the big image but best way to display.

The 8's a little more bolder with color and is a little more crisp than the scan (use it as a beer coaster has some scratches on the holder)
First 9 image is dead on and could be in a 10 holder imo both of which have the squiggly over the shoulder.
The last 9 not as registered doesnt have the squig and have never seen the card registered with the squig

Personally I like the 8 over the first 9 if centered touch higher.

    Hope this helps

Thats the cleanest lightning I have located in house. Thats yours pulled from the auction. Id like to see a closeup but the backgrounds real noisy and the hats dull.
The davis you can tell your getting closer.

The case on ron is its bleeding through the jersey you can even see it on mine a little back in the day yours wouldnt have even yielded a 9 as they had the refractor crew grading 81's 8 years back. I sold so many razor sharp rons with just a hint of red in the jersey.

That why I said you need to get product from everywhere to try and figure them out. Ive just been locked in the same year for YEARS and can say I know 81's inside and out. More than any year I collect other than maybe 77's.

    Hope this helps

Nothing here terry, my nine went in a package deal. Tough card only a 3 to date with one 10. Usually with a slight smudge and the common tilt though seen it square.

Apperantly I was mistaken in my last post. I forgot about teh Reggies. The centering on the Reggies was dead on L/R but about 60/40 T/B. Wasn't expecting a 9 or 10 on those two but was hoping I would get lucky.

Here are a few cards I have available. Feel free to make an offer on any or all. I still feel I got the shaft on this sub and there are quite a few that will be cracked and resubbed out of spite if not sold here.

Feel free to explain to me why a few of these are 9's instead of 10's. Most of the commons are zero pop PSA 10 cards. A few I can accept the 9 like the Littlejohn that has a small fisheye. The Reggies I figured were 8's but was hoping for a 9 on one. The Suttons still look flawless to me.

Jax's is lr centering, swisher appears to be the common out of focus, hard to tell from the scans..Im on the lap.

gator can attest, these 81s are a beast.

sometimes 'justcollect' offers some rare 81s. he seems to be the one to contact when you need a high grade 10 from the 81 set.

This is a shameless plug so I apologize to those who believe it should be listed only in the buy/sell/trade thread, but it's a good deal that I believe will interest 81 Topps collectors. I just listed 225 1981 Topps PSA 9s on ebay. They are in blocks of 25 with $9.99 starting bids per block. Many of the 9s have not come up for some time on ebay and Vintage Card Prices has no records of their sales. Some of the commons have sold for big prices. For example Vintage Card Prices shows the last sale of the Mike Flanagan at $34.01 and the last sale of the Bob Grich at $90. Let me know if you have any questions. I submitted many of these cards myself and they are very sharp.

    My latest upgrade.

I recall, for a very long time, that Lonnie Smith was one of the toughest cards in the set to obtain in even MINT condition. I got my MINT example from Bernie Carlen a few years ago.

Super excited to have this now-

Pretty nice card marc. Might have picked it up with that scan. The card that blows me away in a 10 holder is the bull thats up (fugly)...

Still lookin for the lonnie with the dark green and centered but usually comes with the print...

    Heres mine marc

What card are you talking about?

    Bull

As of late the floodgate has been open for ugly 10's in 81...

Hmmm...tough to tell from the picture. My last 81 I submitted got a 9 o/c for the Nolan Ryan. I don't agree with the o/c call...it's not worse then 65-35

They effectively ruined a true MINT card...

I need 4SC to start subbing some 81 Carlton's if they've opened the floodgates

Still have that extra PSA 10 of #673 Rangers Team. Anyone pick or submit an extra PSA 10 of something and need this let me know.

Picked up 2 PSA 10s this month but not really working on the set much right now. More playing with 80s football.
