Please explain this bountiful selling price

Hi folks... I'm puzzled by the result of this auction, puzzled but pleased.image

Nothing in my research indicated a value like this, not even close, nor 327 hits by auction end..Korean coin

Was this something I was unaware of or the result of a particular buyer who simply wanted it badly? I believe I paid $6.50 for this coin several years ago.

God knows I wish I had several more!image

I don't know anything about them laurent but for a $6.50 purchase to sell it for that price is a great result. Congrats!

I'm not sure it was a happy accident though... A 1782 piece I bought for $30 went for $900+, a mid-1800's example at $8 went for $180+, several more lower grade pieces in Fine to Very Fine, in the $5 to $10 range from the mid to late 1800's went for roughly $35-$60.

I might encourage all world collectors who have Korean coins to look carefully at them and perhaps consider selling them. South korea is one of the countries who contributed billions to some of our troubled financial institutions in the last couple of days; I think we have some very flush Korean buyers on the market...

  • I don't understand a South Korean coin going so high, but the prices for the period I collect - Japanese suzerainty/occupation in the late 19th-early 20th Century - have skyrocketed in the last year or so.

  • Could be some sort of a fluke?
  • HOLY COW!

I thought I had one of those and for that price I am searching through my stuff now.

I cannot find it...why does that look so familiar?

    I can't...

  • I found mine.

It is a 1971 version and isn't in very nice condition.

Wow, that's as crazy as that English token I sold for $340+, recently. Maybe even crazier.

I don't know what the deal is, but I remember having a red UNC South Korean coin (earlier than this) in one of my SSP threads here on the Darkside forum, and for like two years after I sold it, I would get emails about it from folks in Korea who wanted to buy it- and I hadn't even posted a picture. It was just at the end of one of my long text lists, which some of y'all may remember.

You gotta love those pleasant surprises.

PS- as it happens, I just plucked a fair amount of South Korean stuff out of the "Smaug's Hoard".

I shall heed thy advice and toss them in the Bay when there is an opportunity.
