A big boo, hiss, yuck for the Goldberg Pre-Feb Session 6 Catalog

If my count is correct there are 884 lots, including 57 ancients, 528 world gold/plaltinum, and 299 crowns/minors.

The 25 Chinese, 5 Japanese, and 1 Korean total just 3.5% of the sale. image

Edited to correct stupid mistake.

There hasn't been a nice offering of Victorian British coins from either Goldberg or Heritage in some time. There is a smattering of them in this catalogue, but only that. I also noticed that many of the coins are not slabbed. Does that mean they would not meet the standards of PCGS or NGC or is it that the owners simply want them sold raw? Given the last piece I acquired from an auction, I'd be worried about the former - it was cleaned. image

Wybrit makes an excellent point here. Wether we are/were pro or against slabs 2-3 years ago, I believe that we all got used to the idea that buying certified material from the internet was the safest way to go. Just like Tom, I too find myself wondering why such or such (pricey) coin at Heritage, Goldbergs, Ponterio or elsewhere is being auctioned raw and not certified, and most of the times my doubts will stop me from bidding on raw coins that I haven't seen in hand first. The auctioneer's reputation does not mean much, without disrespect to any of the big companies, because I've seen raw coins won by fellow collectors, that turned out to be cleaned, AT or even counterfeit without any option of returning them.

YEP. I was disappointed with the Japanese selection as well....

I finally had a chance to relax in the easy chair and flip through my catalogue. I was a little let down. Dont get me wrong - there are some great coins in there, but just no lots for me to drool over. I suspect that this auction is walking in the shadows of the Millenium sale later this year?
