Tony Sparano is the new Dolphins head coach

After weeks of waiting, Tony Sparano is officially the new head coach of the Miami Dolphins, capping a move by team Vice President Bill Parcells to revamp football operations.

Sparano has been a coach for 24 years, including nine in the NFL, most recently with the Dallas Cowboys. Sparano's tenure with the Cowboys as assistant head coach/offensive line ended with a thud last weekend when the team's high-powered offense was shredded by the New York Giants, who will now play in the Jan. 19 NFC championship against the Green Bay Packers.

Still, the Cowboys have qualified for the playoffs in three of the five years Sparano was with the team, whose fortunes were resurrected by Parcells. The Dolphins, by contrast, have seen a reputation as the NFL's winningest franchise trashed by a series of losing seasons that culminated with a 1-15 record in 2007, the team's worst season ever.
