For Sale or Trade: 1847-O $10 Eagle NGC AU58

1. How I Got this Coin
This coin represents an impulsive purchase of the highest order! Early last year, I came across it either on Teletrade or ebay with only a few minutes left in the auction & it seemed quite cheap (relatively speaking). Despite not really being a fan of the $10 Liberty Head design, I decided to try my luck ... Obviously I won - but not quite for the bargain price I had been hoping for! While I'm not unhappy with the coin, I do sometimes wish that I had used the money to get a coin I would be more excited about. I've now decided to replace it with something that will bring me greater joy. I'm 90% convinced that I will need to go through one of the major auction houses to get a fair price, but I will give the BST forum a try before taking any drastic action.

OK, first things first, here are a couple of rather poor attempts to photograph the coin. For some reason, if I try to capture the coin's luster I end up emphasizing every single imperfection - but if I try to record the condition of the surfaces, I then lose all the luster! In the circumstances, I thought it would be best to provide both versions! Although I haven't bothered to include it here, the slab itself has seen better days - maybe that's why I can't photograph it - & it would be worth the few dollars to get it reholdered.

2. Two different looks!

3. Time to talk turkey!
As the New Orleans "No Motto" $10 with the highest mintage, this date lacks the glamor of its more illustrious siblings. NGC pop reports show a total of 629 having been graded, 83 of which are AU58 & 18 higher (with 1 MS63 being the finest). PCGS has graded 426 - 11 of which are AU58 & 9 higher (including 3 MS64s). According to Garrett & Guth, the overall average grade for this date is 48.7 - with a mere 2% qualifying as MS. Between 1991 & 2005, they found 31 had been sold at auction (average grade 57.3). This is in keeping with the Heritage archives, which show 4 examples sold in 2006 & only 1 in 2007. So, while it may not be as scarce as some other New Orleans issues, it is still far from common - particularly in higher grades. PCGS currently values an AU58 at $3500 & Numismedia FMV is $2340. Move up a grade to MS60 & those values become $7500 & $6190, making an AU58 an attractive compromise!

As my main reason for wanting to sell is to be able to re-invest in a coin that I find more exciting. I am not out to try to turn a big profit. In fact, if I can walk away somewhere near break even I will be satisfied! To that end, I am asking $1900 (which will include shipping, insurance, paypal fees, etc). I am prepared to consider reasonable offers, although I can't promise anything in that regard right now.

As I mentioned in the title of this thread (about 10,000 words ago), I would also be interested - possibly more interested - in trading for a different coin of more interest to me. As long as both coins were much the same value (say, within $1,000), any remaining balance could be paid in cash.

At the moment, I would be interested in either a very nice $10 Indian or $20 Saint (as long as the Saint isn't too common a date). My limit (including the proceeds from my coin) would be $2500-3000 (maybe another $500, if it was something pretty special). I'm not 100% sure how we would calculate the relative exchange values of any coins involved, but it shouldn't be an insurmountable obstacle.

As a relative newcomer here, I have only completed one sale on the BST - which was for approx $50 worth of numismatic literature - but I am hoping to start to make better use of this resource. Should you care to take a look at ebay (User ID = bettor-bidda), you will find I have excellent feedback (just under 400, with 100% positive) & frequently sell coins of equal or greater value with great success.

Sorry to be so long winded. If you need more info or have a prospective deal send me a PM.
