Question

Do I detect some jealousy because I have found some nice items? My intent is not to "Show Off" at all. My first post on this site was yesterday and I merely mentioned a few items I had been lucky enough to find. I was then asked repeatedly to show the $5 coin I had found. I had no idea I would be given assignments to go find "New stuff" to show off. Maybe this is not the place for me after all.

Jealousy? I highly doubt that from this group. I think the fact that a gold coin is such a sought after find people just want to drool.

I know for a fact that if I dug up a $5 gold coin I'd probably have a heart attack image

It's winter and a lot of folks want to keep the fire burning even though they're snowed in and seeing someone else's finds help stoke that fire. image

Actually I detect a sense of "I'm better than you" in your post... It's almost like I'm on the lightside of the forums... My "showoff" comment was merely a joke because, as these guys know, I have been struglling to find my first silver. We are all friends here. LordM was simply proding you to get back inthe "swing" of things. I have found that in my short time here, that we are a greedy bunch that thrives on new finds. Old ones are marvelous but we like seeing stuff recently dug. I have found that this forum, all of the Collector's Universe forums (well most) are the nicest places on the web (and the most helpful). There is an old saying, "The grass ain't always greener on the other side!"

    Jealousy?

You'd better believe it, Mister Gold Coin! image

Not the mean-and-nasty kind of jealousy, though. More of the "you suck" kind of jealousy.

As a newbie, you should understand that "you suck" on this forum is a coveted compliment, actually. It translates to "wow, you suck because you made me jealous".

You'll find this a friendly place, and one of the most tightly-knit communities within the Collectors Universe domain. Even friendlier than the World Coin Forum, which is also full of knowledgeable, wise, and personable folk.

And WAY more civilized than the US Coin Forum, where flame wars and bickering and pointed comments happen with regularity. (This is the "lightside" of which Todd speaks, as opposed to the "darkside" of world coins, where the nicer folks hang out).

We're all friends here. So when somebody tells you how much you suck, take it as the big compliment it is. image

Not at all. People (myself included) were probably particularly eager to see the gold coin, as we so rarely see those posted here.
There are many coin enthusiasts here, so a gold coin is pretty much the ultimate find for many of us. image

Please stay around, we like to see any and all finds - new or old, hear your stories and comments, etc.etc... image

This is a nice bunch of people here. I think you may have read a bit more into some of the comments than was really there...
Any "jealousy" you may detect here tends to be of the very good-natured kind.. We drool at each others' finds a lot.... image

Indeed I was. I forget, in the comfort we all have with one another, that a new member might not understand the gentle, humorous banter that goes back and forth here.

I was simply talking to you as I would somebody that had been here a long time, that's all. You'll fit in just fine.

Take all of my "prodding" as what it was- a compliment.

And by telling you to go out and get some new stuff, I simply was saying that it will be nice to see you enter some new finds in our monthly forum awards, and how much we like to see new stuff found by people here. I was not in any way suggesting that your "older" finds were not up to par, because OBVIOUSLY they are! Heck, I routinely post 12-year-old finds myself. See the good luck token I just made into a new avatar today? Dug it in 1995.

Note to self: don't kid the new folk so much until they're comfortable. Don't scare 'em all away.

It's kinda weird, I guess I have been here a little over 2 months now, well counting my time in the Darkside, and I have found that I felt like I knew you guys about all my life. I fit right in and had a blast posting away. I'm lucky that I can sit at a desk and post comments all day long (gets my post count up!).

Funny, the same thing happened to me on another detecting forum I only started posting to this week.

I posted some of my recent finds (yeah, I was showing off), and somebody started spoofing my posts.

I didn't know if it was good-natured kidding or snide mockery, since it takes time to get to "know" people in cyberspace. I got a bit sensitive, though I didn't let on about it in public. Instead, I shot a PM to the person, politely inquiring what the deal was. I found out that it was indeed good-natured kidding, and there was no need for me to have taken myself too seriously. I just didn't know the ropes there yet.

(Such are the dangers of taking one's self too seriously. Yeah, I'm guilty of it, too.)

Gotta remember to ease the newbies in a little more gently here.

MDH, we're glad to have you here, and I thought that was fairly clear from my posts. If I went too far in kidding you, sorry. Meant no offense at all. You should take it as a sign of confidence, that I would kid around with you the way I do with some of my longtime buddies here.

Now get out there and find us some new stuff to "ooh and ahh" over, will ya? imageimage

Hey, I'm the quasi-official cheerleader on this forum. Just doin' my job, tryin' to liven up the place. It gets a little sleepy in the wintertime sometimes, when the Northern folk go into their caves to hibernate! We need more ACTION!
