Matte Proof Lincolns for the week of Jan 15

Well after a few weeks of holiday break and FUN auctions the weekly MPL list is back! And amazingly another full date list! The old news was the sale of the 64 Brown 1909 VDB for $34,500 (includes buyers premium) As reported on the forum, I felt that this kind of “grabber” price would bring a few other 1909 VDB Mattes out for sale in 2008. Well as you can see, it did not take long!. I will stick my neck out once again and say that I think we are witnessing the rise of the new price King of Lincolns. You can throw away your Red 1926 S and 1914 D. This next 1909 VDB in 66 RED has not only great collector appeal; the price will also be driven by investor appeal. In fact, the list of red specimens will be very exciting to watch at auction.

I noticed a couple of coins that have been listed for some time have had price increases. If you’re using the PCGS price guide to determine the listed value of an MPL cent below you are making a big mistake. Anyone who has bought MPL cents in the past will tell you the price they paid often exceeded the PCGS listed value. If you are trying to decide which MPL to buy, consider this. The next PCGS price guide will be green with price increases. I would also add that many MPL’s are worth considering for upgrade.

As always, if you know of one that is sold on the list or becomes available, just PM me so I can keep the list as accurate as possible. Till next week.

An excellent commentary, and an excellent list. You may scratch this one off " 1909 PCGS PR 65 R&B $2,500 "

I found my very first coin book the other day, part of the items I had packed away from my parents attic when I cleaned the house prior to estate sale. Nicely decorated on the front cover with my flintstones rubber stamps. The 1909 VDB matte proof,.....now sit down......this is a 1959 book, listed at (gulp) $50. The 1909 plain matte proof was $15, and the SVDB unc. was $85. The most expensive cent of all was the 1877 Indian proof, listed at $250. The 55 double die, not even listed, I suppose they were still mythical and had not established a value or credibility at that time.

Ira's 09 is beautiful, I purchased a 09 PR 65RD from him last month, a beautiful coin also. Ira is wonderful, a true gentleman and a seller of beautiful coins.

It is ashamed that these MPLs were not appreciated back in the day. A good light, a good loupe and the quality of the detail and the surface of the fields is just so striking and unique.

It would be very intersting to have that "tarnish proof tissue" that the mint wrapped the early proofs in chemically analyzed and reproduced. Imagine how beautiful the newer "S" mint proofs would look, given a few decades of storage in it!

I'll bet Jack Lee is going to be all over these MPL's in the Long Beach auction.

I have thought about that but I wonder if those matty surfaces have the ability to tone more from that paper than the brilliant proofs of this era?

I wouldnt think so, bare copper is chemically bare copper. The effect would be the same, though the hard part would be the "waiting decades"!

I think they would look different. MPLs dont have the flow lines that business strikes do.

Two SEGS MPLs on eBay, but the pics are too terrible to say if they'll cross:

Be careful with these two, they were bought about 8 weeks ago; something tells me they did not cross at PCGS. I say this because the price has not gone up much and BOTH coins are being sold again. SEGS has a problem not being able to ID a cleaned coin.

Anyone ever deal with this www.penngalleryexchange.com mentioned above?
I went there and pinged them, Tuesday evening, on a different coin, asking for a picture (as per their instructions), and haven't received anything yet.

While I can internet, I can't always call during working hours, so I do a lot via email.

If they can't be bothered to respond, I don't know how much trust I would have in them.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
