Bent coins

Is there a way to straighten out a bent coin without futher damage to the coin?

    I doubt it.

    You might be able to get it "straight enough" but I doubt you can get it straight.

  • A method that one of my favorite dealers uses it to sandwhich the coin between two pieces of leather, then hit it with a hammer. Doesn't always work though. Sometimes it ruins the coin.

    If it's smaller than 34 mm in diameter:

    - place it carefully between two Liberty Head double eagles
    - wrap tape around the "sandwich" thus created
    - gingerly set the coins between the grips of a hand-cranked vise
    - apply steady pressure until the coin is flattened to normal shape

    Agreed. However, even if you're successful, there will be a noticeable change in color in the location of the former bend.

    A machine press will work, as long as it has two flat copper, or lead plates, and the pressure can be done manually. That should work...

    I've seen so many straightened coins that it's hard to believe I missed one. Even little bends leave tell-tale signs.
