Jerry Jones looked like he had just been tasered

Jerry Jones never looked so incredibly ashen after a football game.

There was no sign of color in his face, no life in his voice.

He looked like a man who had just been tasered.

Jones spoke briefly to reporters and expressed "regret"... "disappointment" ... then added, "this one is so gut-wrenching."

He felt in his gut (when he was less numb) that the Cowboys would score in the final two minutes, putt out a win and be playing the Packers at Texas Stadium on Sunday.

"New York had expended a lot of energy out there and we had our opportunity," Jones said of the final 1:50 of the game. "I felt we had a real good chance to win the game."

Instead, it's back to the drawing board. That's what losing teams do.

This was not just a bad day at the office. That's how the Cowboys' owner/general manager is approaching it.

"No, I have fundamentally looked at it and see how we can improve," said Jones, without elaborating.

He did re-emphasize his stand on Wade Phillips: Nothing -- absolutely nothing -- that happened in the playoffs will keep Phillips from returning in 2008.

When asked to quantify his disappointment, Jones bit off the words "no, no, no... this is the biggest disappointment," then let his mind go back to an elimination loss 13 years ago.

"We got beat in the [1994] NFC championship out in San Francisco with a really good team," Jones said. "What cuts and hurts so deep [in these situations] is knowing the quality of players and the kind of team you think you have a chance to be."

I've seen Jones scared after Michael Irvin's neck injury in October 1999 and absolutely vehement after a 31-24 loss at New Orleans late that same season (Chan Gailey would be fired two weeks later).

I've seen Jones lose The Triplets and go through three straight 5-11 seasons with Dave Campo. But I've never seen Jerry look so lost in his own malaise than about 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

"You have to come out here and have a big game," he said. "You can't have a lot of the mistakes we had."

The team will be sending a dozen Pro Bowlers to Hawaii next month. The Giants will be sending one... en route to the NFC title game.

"I'm extremely disappointed for our fans," Jones said. "You had every reason to believe -- given this opportunity for home field, given what we thought we could do here -- you had every reason to think we would be in the [NFC] championship game."

In one corner, Terry Glenn sat with his head down. Teammate Sam Hurd tried to pump him up. Glenn's recent return after a season-long injury wasn't supposed to end in the divisional round of the playoffs.

In another corner, Marcus Spears told reporters: "We can't let this carry over to next year. Otherwise, you'll go out and protect against losing rather than play to win."

Jones was done holding court.

"I don't want to take anything away from our [13-3] regular-season record," he said. "But our undoing tonight involved a lot of things we take a lot of pride in."

The Cowboys were consumed by penalties, lack of points, too few big plays.

"This is a first time we had a team that had [conference championship] ability to not push it up to the championship game," Jones concluded.

Where do the Cowboys go from here with this level of disappointment?

Jerry thought a moment.

"Well, we won't be quitting," he said. "Sometimes, setbacks can give you resolve. And this one is so gut-wrenching."

In a similar vein, I enjoyed watching TV coverage of Dalls Maverick's owner Mark, "Dancing With The Stars" Cuban at the end of game 5 of the Warriors/Mavericks opening round playoff game last year. The #8 seed Warriors beat the #1 seed Mavericks 4-1. The Warriors had the Mavericks number all year and Cuban is in a legal dispute with Don Nelson (the former Mavericks coach and the current Warrior's coach). The look on Cuban's face as his team went down in flames in round #1 when it had the best regular season record was priceless. Just like the look on Jones face when the Cowboys lost yesterday.

Gotta love it when unlikeable owners of pro sports teams get TV face time when their teams lay an eggimage

Yes, she is my dog. Not sure what type, everyone seems to have a different opinion. I got her at the humane society about 3 years ago. They had her down as being "hyper" but it didn't take long to train her to act good and all. She minds very well and is pretty much the perfect dog.

On Jerry Jones, he signed for me by the ramp that leads into Arrowhead Stadium (KC) about 5 years ago. I was wearing one of my brothers Dallas jerseys and none of the KC players stopped for me. Jones did, signed a signature no one could make out and never looked at me in the process.

    Clear Skies,

The very FACT that Jerry made sure to put each players ticket alotment for the NFC Championship game in the players lockers BEFORE the game had something to do with his face color in the end .....
