Help on 1906 Korean 20won gold coin's weight

In the JNDA cataog this coin's weight is 16.66g. If one just weight 16.49g, will that be a fake?
I'm no expert of these coins. But Japanese should be very accurate about the weight of the
gold coins .

If it is not uncirculated, you can expect a certain amount of metal loss, especially with something as soft as gold. If it is uncirculated, I don't know if the numbers you gave are within their standards for variance for weight.

Thank you for the input. I'm also confused about the standard for the variance for weight? There is no English description in the
JNDA catalog, and I don't read Japanese.
  • Although some weight will be lost if the coin is circulated it is usually less than one would think. If your coin is .16 gram below the official weight it should be clearly circulated. Remember that in grades from unc to xf there is very little loss of metal.

The JNDA and Korean catalogues mention nothing about standards of variance. I wish I had an answer for you but I do not. image

Please take no offense in this answer as I am no specialist either. But what I do know of Korean coinage from this time is that they are not typically cheap.

Now the coin you ask about in particular is listed in the 2006 Krause at $25,000 in VF on to $65,000 in UNC with a mintage of 2,506.

I should imagine that this is not the sort of coin that someone who proclaims "I'm no expert of these coins" would stumble upon.

Either you are extremely lucky or you've been had. Given the difference in weight, I am guessing the latter.

I was talking about the coin sold in Stack's sale today for $125,000.00.
